[매직문장] 2권-6  Ta-da!

• Then turn them over to the Duke.

*squint 눈을 가늘게 뜨고[찡그리고] 보다(밝은 빛을 피하거나 무엇을 더 잘 보려고 취하는 동작을 나타냄), 사시, 사팔뜨기

-If you squint at something, you look at it with your eyes partly closed. 

*squinty 사시의, 사팔눈의

One with very squinty eyes held the torch.(2-6/36p)

*give a push 밀다

지극히 영어식 표현이라 읽을 때 이해되지만 입에서는 잘 안나오는 구문, 다시한번 새겨봅니다. 앞으로도 계속 나오니 눈도장 꽝꽝해 보아요. 

 

*전치사 +감정추상명사 

-in fear/ in awe/ in horror/ in wonder…

The guards gasped in fear.(2-6/39p)  

He held his breath as he stared in awe.(2-4/26p)

 

*wipe somebody out ~을 없애 버리다, ~을 완전히 파괴하다

-destroy something completely

I'll wipe you out.(2-5/39p)

무서운 말이네요. 우리 애니가 이런 말도 하고…

 

*mouth drop 입이 딱 벌어지다

Jack's mouth dropped open.(2-5/39p)

His mouth dropped open.(14-4/25p)

The scholar’s mouth dropped open again.(14-5/29p)

Jack felt his stomach drop.(19-4/28p) 

 

-‘mouth drop 입이 딱 벌어지다’ 표현이 넘 재미있죠. 만화에 나오는 한 장면 같아요. 

놀랄 때는 drop이란 단어를 자주 사용해요. mouth drop/ stomach drop

우리말로는 ‘간 떨어질뻔했다’ 또는 ‘가슴이 철렁했다’를 stomach drop으로 표현한 것도 같이 봐주세요.

[매직문장] 2권-7 A secret Passage

• I'm going to have to go feet first.

*tear 샅샅이 뒤지다, 화급히 움직이다, 찢다, 눈물 

-search a place thoroughly 

*through ~을 통해, ~사이로, (일·활동 등)을 끝낸, 마친

*tear through 샅샅이 훑어보다, 일을 급하게 진행하다

+) tear-tore-torn

 

He pulled out the book and started tearing through it.(2-7/43p) 

He grabbed it and tore through it, looking for the photograph of the Frog Creek woods.(1-9/60p) 

 

1권에 이어 tear가 또 나왔어요. 뒤에서도 은근 자주 나오는 단어에요. ‘화급히 움직이다’라는 뜻 말고도 ‘search a place thoroughly 샅샅이 뒤지다’의 뜻도 있어요. 그래서 tear와 전치사  through가 만나 그 느낌이 더 살아나요.  

 

He flipped through the pages of the castle book.(2-7/43p) 

flip through가 책장을 그냥 넘기는 느낌이라면 tear through는 뭔가를 찾아보려고 샅샅이 보는 느낌으로 보면 될 듯 해요. 

 

*hold one's breath 숨을 멈추다(진찰, x레이 사진 찍을때)/숨 죽이다/ 한숨돌리다

Jack held his breath.(2-7/43p) 

앞에서도 계속 나왔던 표현이고, 또 계속해서 나와요. 긴장된 순간에 숨 죽인 잭의 모습이 그려져요. 

 

*거리를 나타낼 때- five stones away/ a few feet away

The trapdoor in the picture was five stones away from the door to the hall.(2-7/44p) -five stones away 

A man carrying a tray of pies was standing a few feet away.(2-4/28p)-a few feet away

Jack and Annie saw him just a few feet away.(2-8/55p)-a few feet away

 

*get 비교급: 점점 ~해지다

*dim (빛이) 어둑한[흐릿한]

The light got dimmer and dimmer.(2-7/46p) 

 The wind got louder and louder.(2-9/61p) 

 

*run down (건전지 등이) 다 되다

Were the batteries running down?

I think our light’s dying!

He was desperate to get out of the castle before the batteries died completely.(2-7/46p)  

 

-영어로도 ‘빛이 죽었다, 배터리가 죽었다’라고 표현하는 게 재미있어요. 우리말하고도 비슷하죠.

가방을 등에 멜 때 쓰는 표현 

*put something on ~입다[쓰다/끼다/걸치다]

*put the pack on one’s back 가방을 등에 메다

He put the pack on his back.(2-7/47p) 

 

*sling (느슨하게) 메다[걸다/달다]

*sling over one's shoulder 어깨에 메다, 둘러메다

Jack slung his backpack over his shoulder.(1-10/65p) 

1권에서는 잭이 가방을 멜 때 sling over를 사용했어요. sling이 ‘(느슨하게) 메다’라는 뜻이 있어요. 

 

*feet first 발이 먼저

I'm going to have to go feet first.(2-7/47p) 

+) He landed feet first. 그는 발이 먼저 땅에 닿았다.

+) Stretch right feet first. 오른발을 먼저 뻗으세요. 

+) Let me go wash my feet first. 일단 발을 좀 씻고 오겠습니다. 

 

*lay on one’s stomach 배를 대고 누운 모습

He lay down on his stomach.(2-7/47p)

inch 동사 또 나왔어요. 반갑게 맞아줍시다~

 

[매직문장] 2권-8 The Knight

• He couldn't even see the moat, much less a crocodile.
• At first it seemed as if she was swimming in front him.
• A pool of light  spread through the mist.
• He imagined a crocodile slithering after him.
• Her voice came from in front.
• He seemed to be staring straight at Jack and Annie.
•  “I’m in… the moat!” said Jack, gasping for air.

 

*flail (팔다리를)마구 움직이다

He coughed and flailed his arms.(2-8/50p) 

저도 물에 빠지면 잭과 같은 모습이었을 것 같아요. 

 

*from above 위에서 (부르고 있었다)

Annie was calling him from above.(2-8/50p)

*from in front 앞에서 (들렸다)

Her voice came from in front.(2-8/51p) 

-from above, from in front 이런 표현 챙겨봅니다. 

 

*put something on ~입다[쓰다/끼다/걸치다]

He tried to tread water and put his glasses back on.(2-8/50p) 

He shook the water off his glasses and put them back on.(2-8/53p) 

 

cf)put the pack on one’s back 가방을 등에 메다

He put the pack on his back.(2-7/47p) 

 

가방을 멜 때 뿐 아니라 안경 쓸 때도 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 put something on 

여기에 안경을 다시 썼다의 의미로 back을 넣어

put his glasses back on/ put them back on으로 표현하고 있어요, 쉽쥬~

 

*tread (발을) 디디다, 밟다 

*tread water (물 속에 서서) 선헤엄을 치다

-to stay upright in deep water by moving your legs and arms so that your head stays out of the water. 깊은 물 속에서 물 밖으로 머리를 내놓고 팔다리를 움직여 똑바로 서려고 둥둥 뜨려는 모습 상상해보면 될 듯요. 

He tried to tread water and put his glasses back on.(2-8/50p) 

 

*streak (줄같이) 기다란 자국[흔적]을 내다, 줄무늬를 넣다

-A streak is a long stripe or mark on a surface which contrasts with the surface. 

*water-streaked 물로 앞이 가려진

He couldn’t see anything through his water-streaked glasses.(2-8/51p) 

 

*slither (매끄럽게) 스르르 나아가다[기어가다]

He imagined a crocodile slithering after him.(2-8/52p)

악어, 뱀, 곤충 등이 스르륵 기어가는 모습 묘사할 때 쓰면 되겠지요.

 

*shiver 떨다

*all over 곳곳에, 사방에

He was shivering all over.

His teeth were chattering.(2-8/52p) 

읽기만 해도 내 몸에 닭살이 돋을 정도로 춥네요. 

 

*chatter 딱딱 맞부딪히다, 수다를 떨다

His teeth were chattering.(2-8/52p) 

Her teeth were chattering, too.(2-8/53p)

 

*much less <부정문 뒤에서> 하물며(더구나) …은 아니다 

He couldn't even see the moat, much less a crocodile.(2-8/53p) 

그는 해자조차도 볼 수 없었는데, 하물며 악어를 볼 수 있을까? (당연히 못본다)

 

+) I don't have any money for food, much less for clothes. 

쌀 살 돈도 없는데 하물며 옷 살 돈이 있겠어요?  

 

We made it!(2-8/53p) 

(힘든 고비가 있었지만 잘 이겨내고) 해냈어! 성공했어! 

실생활에서 유용히 쓸 수 있는 문장, 외우기도 간단한 문장, We made it! 해 보아요. 

 

[매직문장] 2권-9 Under the Moon

• Jack was only half-listening.
• The knight brought his horse to a stop.
• Jack heard Annie fumble in the darkness.
• He dismounted and helped Annie down.
• He rocked back and forth in the saddle.

 

*hold out (손 등을) 내밀다

The knight held out his gloved hand.(2-9/56p)  

 

+)hold (손팔 등으로) 잡다[쥐다]

Let’s hold hands.

 

손을 잡을 때는 hold

손을 내밀때는 hold out

hold out, 매 권마다 나오는 구문이에요. 

 

*place (조심스럽게) 놓다(두다)

-If you place something somewhere, you put it in a particular position, especially in a careful, firm, or deliberate way. 

He placed Jack on the horse, behind Annie.(2-9/57p)  

Jack placed it back with all the other books.(2-10/63p)  

Jack placed the bookmark next to the medallion.(2-10/65p)  

 

The knight picked Annie up and put her on the back of his horse.(2-9/56p) 

말에 올려놓는 표현을 애니는 put(놓다), 잭은 place(조심스럽게 놓다)으로 사용하고 있어요. 

 

*rock(전후・좌우로 부드럽게) 흔들리다, 마구 뒤흔들리다

 Jack rocked back and forth in the saddle.(2-9/56p) 

-rock이 동사로 '흔들리다' 의미로 앞으로도 자주 나와요.

 

*bring ~(어떤 상태)에 이르게 하다 

*bring A to a stop: A 를 멈추게 하다

+)bring the war to an end 전쟁을 끝내다

The knight brought his horse to a stop.(2-9/59p)   

(물리적으로만 멈추는게 아니라 전쟁 등 어떤 상태를 멈추는 거에도 해당이 되나 봅니다.)

 

A black mist swallowed the land.(2-9/60p)   

Everything had beeb swallowed up by the thick, soupy darkness.(2-8/53p) 

어둠이 삼켜버렸다는 말이 영어에도 똑같이 있어서 신기했어요. 

 

*fumble (무엇을 하거나 찾으려고 손으로) 더듬다, 여기저기 찾아다니다

-If you fumble for something or  fumble with  something, you try to reach for it or hold it in a clumsy way. 

+)fumble for a key 열쇠를 더듬어 찾다

Jack heard  Annie fumble in the darkness.(2-9/60p)   

-hear가 지각동사라서 목적어의 목적보어로 원형동사 사용

 

*half-listening 한 귀로는 듣고 한 귀로는 흘리고, 듣는 둥 마는 둥

-not listen with your full attention

Jack was only half-listening.(2-9/60p) 

 

함께 영어 공부하면 좋은 게, 이렇게 한번씩 얘기 나누다 보면 잘 기억되는 효과가 있어요.

그러니, 절대 half-listening하지 마시고, 새겨 들으세요^^

*no sign of ~의 징조[흔적]가 없는

-A house or room that is cozy is comfortable and warm.

*take off (옷을) 벗다

*pull on (옷을 잡아당겨서) 착용하다

He took off his damp clothes and pulled on his dry, soft pajamas.(2-10/64p) 

 

-take off의 반대로 put on을 쓸 수도 있지만 옷을 잡아당겨 입는 느낌으로 pull on을 쓴 듯 싶어요.

 

*must have p.p ~했음에 틀림없다(과거 일에 대한 강한 추측)

*worn 해진, 닳은, wear의 과거분사
