[매직문장]은 매직낭독으로 하루 한 챕터씩 열 번씩 소리 내어 읽었던 주요 문장들을 구체화시키는 작업입니다. 10번 읽기로 익숙해진 문장을 다시 여러번 반복하여 읽고 암기하는 것은 영어를 영어로 체화할 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법입니다. 매일 하루의 영어공부를 마무리하면서 한 번이라도 더 읽어보고 녹음하면 효과가 좋습니다. 매일 5분이 모여 큰 힘이 되어줄 것입니다. 

 

[매직문장] 3권-1 Meow!

• Hot bright sunlight nearly blinded him.
• The tree house looks the same as it did yesterday.
• A black cat was perched on a branch.
• It was the strangest cat Jack had ever seen. 
• But before dinosaurs. Way before dinosaurs.

 

*gaze 응시하다, 뚫어지게 보다, 응시, 주시

Jack and his seven-year-old sister gazed up at a very tall oak tree..(3-1/1p)

Jack gazed over the top of the bushes.(3-1/2p)

gaze 앞으로도 계속 나오는 단어, 눈여겨 봅니다. 

 

*sweep through ~을 휩쓸고 지나가다

A breeze swept through the woods.(3-1/3p)

 

sweep(쓸다, 털다, 청소하다)이란 동사가 전치사 through(...을 통해, 관통하여, 지나서)를 만나 휩쓸고 지나간 느낌을 살려줍니다. 매직트리하우스로 전치사, 구동사 공부 확실히 할 수 있습니다. 

 

*in one's face/ in one's eyes ~의 얼굴에, ~ 눈앞에

She waved a dinosaur book in Jack's face.(3-1/4p) 

*the day before yesterday 그저께

The day before yesterday the dinosaur book has taken them to the time of dinosaurs.(3-1/4p) 

 

*catch one's breath 잠시 숨을 가다듬다, 숨을 죽이다, 한숨 돌리다,

hold one’s breath 구문과 비슷한 형태

 

Pyramids were high on his list of favorite things.(3-1/5,6p)

 

*way (강조부사로 구어체에서 부사나 전치사를 강조) 훨씬, 월등히, 한참 저~멀리

- You can use 'way' to emphasize.

너무 눈부셔서 눈을 뜰 수 없을 때 쓸 수 있는 표현

고양이는 고대 이집트의 여신 바스트(고양이 머리에 여성의 몸을 하고 있음)를 상징하는 동물로, 이집트 왕족 아이들의 보호자역할을 했다고 해요. 이번 고대 이집트여행에서 잭과 애니를 도와주는 중요한 역할을 하지 않을까 싶어요. 그러고보니 박물관에서 고양이 미라를 여러번 본 기억이 있어요.

*유용한 영어표현 정리

[매직문장] 2권-2 Oh, Man. Mummies!

• Someone might hear you.
• The closer they got to the parade, the harder it was to see it.
• She sure knew how to get to him.
• I'd better make some notes about this.
• There’s no such thing as ghosts. It must have been a mirage.
• Jack shoved his notebook and the Egypt book into his pack.
• But as they ran a strange thing happened.

 

*patch 특히 주변과 다른 부분

A patch of green surrounded by a sandy desert.(3-2/9p)

patch는 (특히 주변과는 다른 조그만)부분이란 뜻으로  a patch of green은 자그마한 녹지대로 보시면 될 듯 해요. 매직트리하우스 읽다보면 a patch of란 표현이 자주 나와요.

우리도 길가다보면 주변과 다르게 초록숲이 조금씩 있는, 그런 느낌정도로 봐주세요. 

 

*take a note/ make a note/ keep a note

*take notes/ make notes/ keep notes

기본동사 take/ make/ keep에 따라 뉘앙스가 조금씩 달라요. 

오늘은 구문형태를 살펴보고 갑시다. 

 

*get to somebody 신경쓰이다,괴롭히다, 영향을 미치다

*how to ~하는 법 

She sure knew how to get to him.(3-2/14p) 

+) It gets to me when my ears are wet. 귀가 젖으면 신경쓰인다. 

+) Don't let him get to you. 그를 신경쓰게 하지마. 

+) Nothing can get to her when she is concentrating.

그녀가 집중을 하고 있을 때는 어떤 것도 그녀를 신경쓰게 할 수 없다. 

 

우리 애니가 오빠를 어떻게 다뤄야 하는지 잘 알아요~ 천방지축이지만 마음 예쁜 애니의 활약을 앞으로 기대해 주세요.

 

*The closer ~the harder ~

*the 비교급, the 비교급: ~할수록 ~하다

The closer they got to the parade, the harder it was to see it.(3-2/14p)

퍼레이드에 가까이 다가갈수록, 그것을 보기가 더 어려웠다.

+) The more, the better.

+) The more you learn, the happier you are. 

 

*pant 숨차다, 몹시 두근거리다

Panting, Jack looked around.(3-2/14p) 

“A false passage?” said Annie, panting.(3-8/50p) 

앞으로도 계속 보게 되는 단어 pant, 한번 더 짚고 갑니다. 

 

*happen (특히 계획하지 않은 일이) 있다[발생하다/벌어지다], (무엇의 결과로) 일어나다

*It happens all the time. 늘 있는 일이야, 항상 일어나는 일이야.(걱정마시오)

-slink에 부사 away(떨어져, 다른데로)가 붙어 그 느낌이 더 살아나요. 

 

고양이과 동물들의 특성인지 7권에서 sabertooth도 slink 해요. 

The sabertooth was slinking off toward the cliffs.(7-9/60p)

Behind them the sabertooth was slinking across the sunlit snow!(7-8/54p)

 

*유용한 문장정리 

Someone might hear you.(3-2/9p) 

It’s the picture from the book.(3-2/12p)

[매직문장] 3권-3  It's Alive!

• The hallway went on and on.
• She gave him a little push.
• Jack tucked the book under his arm.
• I bet a mummy's there.
• The floor slanted up from where they stood.
• The book showed a picture of the inside of the pyramid.
• Dark shadows loomed.

 

*loom 어렴풋이 나타나다

Dark shadows loomed.(3-3/17p)  

A huge castle loomed out of the fog.(2-2/14p) 

 

*torch 횃불

Burning torches lit the walls.(3-3/17p) 

He held it below a torch on the wall.(3-3/19p) 

Torches lit the high wall around the courtyard.(2-4/25p) 

It was lit by torches on the wall.(2-8/49p)

And all the torches went out.(2-8/50p) 

 

다시나와 반가운 단어 loom, torch 어렴풋한가요? 

 

*slant 기울어지다, 비스듬히하다

The floor slanted upp from where they stood.(3-3/18p) 

Jack started up the slanting floor of the hallway.(3-3/18p) 

The hallway slants up.(3-3/19p) 

Sunlight slanted across a stack of books.(6-1/4p)

-바닥이 기울어져 비스듬한 것과

햇살이 비스듬히 비쳐드는 것,

해가 기울어져 비스듬히 비쳐든다는 표현이 낭만적이었는데 바닥이 기울어져 있다니.... 

 

◈비슷해서 헷갈리는 단어 farther vs. further

1. farther <물리적 거리> 더 멀리

-)far-farther-farthest 

 

2. further <시간 정도 거리 수량> 더 멀리에, 더 나아가, 게다가

-)far-further-furthest

 

+) I can go no farther/further. 나는 더 이상 갈 수가 없다.

+) The issue needs further examination. 그 사안은 더 많은 검토가 필요하다.

 

farther는  <물리적 거리>에만 사용되고, further가  <시간 정도 거리 수량>을 나타내어 더 많이 사용됩니다. 우리에게 둘다 알려주시려고 매직작가님은 둘 다 골고루 사용하고 계세요. 다음에 나오면 반갑게 맞아 줍시다.

*give a push 밀다

She gave him a little push.(3-3/18p)

-계속해서 나오는 give a push/give a chance/ give a look/ give a smile… 

이해해도 입에서는 잘 안나오는 구문, 다시한번 새겨봅니다. 

 

*tuck 집어[끼워] 넣다, (끝부분을 단정하게) 밀어넣다[접다]

*tuck under one’s arm 겨드랑이에 끼우다

Jack tucked the book under his arm.(3-3/19p)  

There -at the top- was a tree house. It was tucked between two branches.(1-1/3p)  

‘tuck 턱’하고 책을 옆구리에 끼워 볼까요? 

 

*musty and stale 퀴퀴한 냄새

The air felt different. Musty and stale.(3-3/19p)  

피라미드 안마다 공기와 냄새가 다르다는 게 신기해요. 

 

*swoosh 휙하는 소리를 내며 움직이다

It swooshed toward them!(3-3/20p)

• It means they have power over the people.
• A wave of terror went through him. 
• But what if the robber comes back.
• The scepter passed right through the lady’s hand.
• She lifted something from the floor.
• Jack felt a whoosh of cold air.
• What kind of person would be inside a pyramid?

 

*stammer 말을 더듬다, (공포, 당황, 긴장 따위로 ) 말이 술술 나오지 않다

*sputter (분노·충격으로) 식식거리며(더듬거리며) 말하다 =spltter

 

"F-forget it," stammered Jack.(3-4/21p)

"Wh-ehere are we?" stammered Jack.(1-3/13p)

"Hi! I'm here!" Annie sputtered.(2-8/51p)

-말을 더듬거릴 때 쓰는 단어들이 비슷하게 생겼어요. 

  매직트리하우스에 나온 단어들 같이 살펴봅니다. 

 

*a foot long 1피트=약 30.48cm 

-예전 어렸을 때 쓰던 30센티미터 자 생각하면 쉬워요.

센티나 미터에 익숙한 우리들에게 영어로 길이나 거리에 대한 표현은 봐도 봐도 어려워요.

서브웨이 풋롱 샌드위치도 떠올려 봅니다. 

 

A dog's head was carved on one end.(3-4/21p) 

A series of tiny pictures were carved into the stone.(3-6/31p)  

뭐가 어디에 새겨졌다라는 표현을 carve를 이용해 자연스럽게 연습을 해 봅니다. 

 

*over the people 백성을 다스리는, 인민을 초월하여

It means they have power over the people.(3-4/22p)   

 ‘사람들에 대해 힘이 있다’라는 의미로 power over the people.

 

*carry off 재물을 빼앗아가다, 약탈하다 remove forcefully

Tomb robbers often carried off the treasure buried with mummies.(3-4/23p) 

:tomb robber 도굴꾼 →carry off 훔치다(약탈하다)

 

*a wave of terror 공포의 물결(감정)

*go through 거쳐가다, 거치다, 겪다, 뚫다 

A wave of terror went through him.(3-4/24p)    

 

*hold out 손을 뻗어 내밀어서 건네주다, 내밀다

Jack held out the scepter.(3-4/25p)   

He held them out to the ghost-queen..(3-5/29p)   

The knight held out his gloved hand.(2-9/56p)  

 

+)hold (손팔 등으로) 잡다[쥐다]

Let’s hold hands.

 

손을 잡을 때는 hold

손을 내밀 때는 hold out

hold out, 매 권 마다 나오는 구문, 또 나왔어요. 

 

*pass through ...에 꿰뚫다[관통하다], ...을 빠져나가다

The scepter passed right through the lady's hand.(3-4/25p)  

Before I journey on to the Next Life, I must pass through the horrors of the Underworld.(3-5/27p) 

scepter를 유령여왕에게 돌려주려는데 scepter는 그녀의 손을 쓰윽 통과해 지나가버리고, 유령여왕 후테피는 사후세계로 가기 전에 지하세계의 공포를 통과해야 한다고 말해요. through를 써서 그 느낌이 살아납니다. 

 

*기억하고 싶은 문장정리 

About a foot long.(3-4/21p) 

Maybe the book can help us.(3-4/22p) 

What if the robber comes back.(3-4/23p) 

We’d better leave.(3-4/23p) 

I want to write something down.(3-4/23p) 

 

[매직문장] 3-5 The Ghost-Queen

• Jack's heart was pounding so hard he thought he might faint.
• I cannot see clearly that which is close to my eyes.
• It's the ancient Egyptian way of writing.
• That's why he wears glasses.
• Jack was still in shock.

 

*전치사 +감정추상명사 

-in horror/ in shock/in wonder/in fear/ in awe…

Jack could only stare in horror.(3-5/26p) → in horror

Jack was still in shock.(3-5/28p ) → in shock

The ghost-queen stared in wonder at Jack.(3-5/29p) → in wonder

The guards gasped in fear.(2-6/39p) → in fear

He held his breath as he stared in awe.(2-4/26p) → in awe

 

이 구문 형태가 앞으로도 계속 나와요. 잘 기억해 둡시다. 

 

*pound (가슴이) 쿵쿵 뛰다

-If your heart is pounding, it is beating with an unusually strong and fast rhythm, usually because you are afraid.

*faint 기절하다, 졸도하다

Jack's heart was pounding so hard he thought he might faint.(3-5/26p)

 

2권에서 나온 단어

*squint 눈을 가늘게 뜨고[찡그리고] 보다

*squint at ~을 슬쩍보다

-If you squint at something, you look at it with your eyes partly closed.
