• My class put on a play about the first Thanksgiving.
• They crunched over to a tree at the edge of the woods. 
• We'll just tell them hi and stuff.
• The air felt crisp and cool.
• We'll get to meet the real Priscilla!
• But we can't let anyone see us.

 

*feel (촉감으로) 느끼다 = sense

*crisp and cool 상쾌하고 시원한

The air felt crisp and cool.(27-2/8p) 공기가 상쾌하고 시원했다. 

-crisp하면 바삭바삭한 감자칩이 생각나는데, 날씨에서는 상쾌한~

 

◈ crisp 단어 살펴보기

(공기, 날씨가) 서늘한, 상쾌한 

(표현이 ) 생생한, 명쾌한

(태도가) 단호한, 활기찬, 분명한

(야채,과일등이) 단단한, 싱싱한, 아삭아삭한

(종이나 돈이) 빳빳한

(머리가 ) 곱슬곱슬한

(피부가 ) 푸석한, 주름진

-crisp에 대한 해석이 모두 생생하고 신선한 이미지인데 

피부에 관련되서는 ‘푸석한, 주름진"이라니… 

근데 피부가 너무 바삭하다면?  푸석하고, 주름도 잘 지겠죠^^

 

*put on a play 연극하다

My class put on a play about the first Thanksgiving.(27-2/12p)

-put on이 ‘상연하다’의 의미가 있는데 a play가 붙어 연극이라고 딱 짚어주네요. 

 

He must have watched the show you put on.(26-9/61,62p)

-아기 고릴라를 구하고 표범을 쫓아냈던 잭, 그때도 '상연하다’의 의미였죠.

기억을 떠올리며 읽어봅니다. 

 

*and stuff (like that) (구어)~따위, ~같은 것

“We’ll just tell them hi and stuff,“ said Annie.(27-2/12p)

 

+) I usually do sleeping, watching TV and stuff like that on weekends. 

    주말에는 주로 잠자고, TV보고, 뭐 그런 일들을 한다.

잭이 늘 ‘안경을 고쳐쓰다’라고 했는데

처음으로 ‘안경을 올리다’라는 표현이 나왔어요.

 

우리에게 익숙한 that’s why 구문 살펴봅니다. 

*that's why 그 때문이야, 그렇게 된거야

*jerk 홱 움직이다, 갑자기 움직이다. 홱 움직임, 갑자기 잡아당김

- to move very suddenly, or to make sth move suddenly

 

*jerk up 휙 잡아 당기다

-셰익스피어 연극에서 애니의 장면 기억나시죠?

*dizzy 어지러운, 아찔한

*feel dizzy 현기증을 느끼다, 어지럽다

입에 붙게 신경써서 연습해 봅니다.

"That’s just how they climbed the tree," Annie whispered to Jack.(5-4/20p) 

-that’s why, that’s where에 이어 that's how 

 

*up north 북부로, 북부에

Um, we live in a village up north.(27-3/22p)  

-영작하기 힘든 표현

그냥 외우는 게 속 편합니다. 

 

*make up a story 이야기를 꾸며내다, 얘기를 만들다

*back out 중도포기하다, 발뺌하다

Now that he had started making up a story, he couldn't back out. (27-3/22p)

잭은 이야기를 꾸며내기 시작했으니까, 그만둘 수도 없었다. 

 

-이래서 거짓말은 또다른 거짓말을 낳고…

다행히 리서치북에서 본 걸 기억해내고는 말 만들어내는 잭,

범생이 잭이 이런 상황에서 고생했겠어요. 

 

*pound (가슴이) 쿵쿵 뛰다

-If your heart is pounding, it is beating with an unusually strong and fast rhythm, usually because you are afraid.

His heart pounded.(27-3/23p)

Jack's heart pounded with excitement.(8-2/13p)

*folk (일반적인) 사람들

We welcome all the small folk sent to us.(27-4/24,25p)

-welcome하면 “You’re welcome.”이 먼저 떠오르죠.

-welcome 목적어 to 구문 기억해 봅니다. 

 

*no matter 상관없다[괜찮다]

*no matter where 어디를 막론하고 

Children are a gift from God - no matter where they come from.(27-4/25p) 

-a gift로 쓰인 것도 눈여겨 봐주세요. 

 

We welcome all the small folk sent to us.

 -우리말 표현과 넘 비슷해서 반갑기까지 해요. 

먹여야 할 사람 대신 mouth이라고 표현한 게 재미있어요

 

*bid (옛글투) (...하라고) 말하다[명령하다], (인사를) 하다

Then I bid thee bring back as many eels and clams as thou can.(27-4/28p) 

 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 27-5 Eels and Clams

• We scared him half to death!
• Their feet were caked with muddy sand.

 

*swoop 급강하하다, 위에서 덮치다,  덤벼들다

Seagulls swooped over the water.(27-5/31p)

They had swooped down and were picking at the garbage left on the cobblestones.(25-9/62p)

Birds swooped from branch to branch.(18-1/6p)

Suddenly the monkey swooped down from his tree.(6-7/44p)  

Then she swooped down to the ocean.(4-2/12p)  

 

-매직트리하우스에서 swoop은 주로 새가 날아가는 모습을 표현할 때 쓰고 있어요.

주로 swoop down의 형태인데, 

이번에는 swoop over 물 위를 표현하려고 over로 쓴 듯 해요. 

 

*look up 찾아보다, 올려다보다

He pulled out their book and looked up eels in the index.(27-5/31p) 

But he took out the book again and looked up clams.(27-5/34p)

He looked up Pilgrim children.(27-5/35p)
-이번 챕터에서는 ‘찾아보다’의 의미로 쓰였어요. 

 

*half to death (거의 반) 죽을 정도다

*boil to death 삶아죽다

*freeze to death 얼어죽다

We scared him half to death!(27-5/34p)  

Not only that, we'd boil to death if it was day and freeze to death if it was night.(8-1/9p)  

Before we freeze to death.(7-2/12p)

-우리말과 비슷한 표현이 영어에도 있으니 반가워요. 

 

*known to ...에게 알려진

The oldest have been known to live for almost 100 years.(27-5/34p)  

They are known to be shy and gentle giants.(26-5/30p)

For this reason she became known as the Angel of the Battlefield.(21-5/36p) 

 

*soaking wet 흠뻑 젖은, 완전히 다 젖은

Their clothes were soaking wet.(27-5/35p)  

They were soaking wet and covered with slush and snow.(22-9/64p) 

She was barefoot and soaking wet.(19-6/40p)

Finally, she was clean and soaking wet.(11-6/36p)

-우리 잭과 애니가 흠뻑 젖었네요.

 

*break in 끼어들다[방해하다], 침입하다

“Oh, forget it,” Annie broke in.(27-5/35p)  

"If who yells rude things?" Jack broke in.(25-6/39p)

-애니든 잭이든 다급하면 끼어들 수 밖에요.

 

*cake (마르면서) 딱딱해지다, (마르면 딱딱해지는 것을) 두껍게 바르다

*caked with ...이 말라붙은, 덕지덕지 붙어있는

Their feet were caked with muddy sand.(27-5/35p)

-먹는 cake만 익숙한데 

24권 캘리포니아 지진편에서도 cake이 동사로 쓰였던 것 기억하시죠.

챕터 5에는 비슷비슷하게 생긴 단어가 많아보여요. 단어정리 해봅니다.
