-useful이란 단어가 사람한테도 이렇게 쓰이고 있어요.

*haste (특히 시간이 부족하여) 서두름, 급함 = hurry 

*make haste 서두르다

*명령문 + or: ~해라, 그렇지 않으면

*catch sight of ...을 보다, 흘끗[언뜻] 보다, ...을 찾아내다

-빵굽는 일이 뿐 아니라 일반적인 가사일 도울 때도  

help with the bread란 표현을 대표적으로 쓴대요.

 

*super  <부사> (속어) 매우, 극도로

The handle was super hot.(27-7/52p)

Let's just go super slow.(15-2/15p) 

 

-super가 형용사로 ‘대단한, 굉장히 좋은’의 의미말고,

부사로도 (속어) ‘매우, 극도로’의 뜻도 있어요. 

보통 우리는 very정도 쓰는데 super 하니까 느낌이 확 살아납니다.

 

*yank[jæŋk] 홱 잡아당기다

He yanked his hand away and knocked the spit off its legs.(27-7/52p)

Jack yanked the captain’s letter from his bag.(22-8/55p) 

She yanked the bell rope.(15-6/42p) 

The next thing he knew, his helmet was yanked off.(2-5/35p) 

 

*burst 터지다, 파열하다, 터뜨리다, 파열시키다, 불쑥 가다[오다/움직이다]

*burst into (갑자기) ~을 터뜨리다[내뿜다], 갑자기 ...하다

The turkey burst into flame!(27-7/52p) 

A tree suddenly burst into flames.(20-4/34p) 

-불길에 갑자기 휩싸일 때 burst into 

 

*billow (연기,구름)이 피어오르다

*billow up (연기구름 등이) 피어오르다

The fire sizzled and smoke billowed up.(27-7/53p) 

Smoke billowed up from the bottom of the hill.(24-5/40p)

A cloud of dust billowed around Jack.(24-3/19p)

Huge clouds of black smoke billowed into the gray sky.(23-2/10p)

-billow 자체가 ‘(연기,구름)이 피어오르다’인데 

여기에 up이 더해져 느낌을 더 살리고 있어요. 

 

The turkey was completely balck.(27-7/54p)  

-돕고 싶은 마음이 컸을텐데 얼마나 속상했을까요. 

서툴러서 그런거지요. clumsily라는 단어가 떠오르는 장면이었어요. 

 

*fire be out 불이 꺼지다

When the smoke cleared, the fire was out.(27-7/54p)  

-연기가 걷히자, 불도 꺼졌어요. 

아이들이 얼마나 놀라고 허망했을까요. 

그래도 잭이 다치지 않아 다행이에요. 

 

+) put out (불을) 끄다: 보통 산불 등을 끌 때 사용

+) putting out the wildfire 산불을 끄다

The heavy rain was putting out the wildfire.(20-7/48p) 

=The wildfire was extinguished by the heavy rain. 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 27권-8 The Feast

• Priscilla knelt down and looked him in the eye.
• Seeing all the platters of food  had made him really hungry. 
• Jack buried his face in his hands./He looked away from her.
• He thought he’d been no help at all.
• We salted our fish and cured our meat.

 

*bury (얼굴, 비밀, 땅 등을) 묻다, 숨기다

*bury one's face in one's hands 손으로 얼굴을 가리다

 Jack buried his face in his hands.(27-8/54p)

-신체일부를 나타낼 때는  in 전치사와 함께 사용하는 것 눈여겨 봐주세요. 

 

*burn 타다,후끈거리다, 화상

*burn up ~을 깡그리 태우다, 불이 나다

I just burned up the Pilgrims' turkey!(27-8/54p)

It burned up!(27-8/55p)

 

-그냥 burn만 해도 속상한데 

up이 붙어 깡그리, 완전히 태워버렸다는 느낌이 들어요. 

 

*look away 눈길[얼굴]을 돌리다((from))

He looked away from her.(27-8/55p)

-프리실라를 바라보지 못하고 외면하는 잭, 가엽어라…

 

*store 저장하다

*salt 소금에 절이다

*cure (말리거나 절여서) 육류,어류를 저장하다

We stored many vegetables.(27-8/56p) 

We salted our fish and cured our meat.(27-8/56p) 

-salt 소금이라고만 알고 있었는데, ‘소금에 절이다’라는 동사표현

 

*look 보다, 응시하다 + in the eye(신체일부를 나타낼 때 전치사 in)

Priscilla knelt down and looked him in the eye.(27-8/57p) 

-무릎꿇고 잭의 눈높이에서 따뜻하게 말해주는 프리실라

 

*kneel 무릎을 꿇다

*kneel down 꿇어 앉다, 무릎을 꿇다

Priscilla knelt down and looked him in the eye.(27-8/57p) 

They crossed the room and knelt before the tired-looking man.(24-9/61p) 

Jack knelt down and touched the brown fur.(20-4/30p)

=fall on one's knees

-결과만 보고 얘기하는 게 아니라

-간단한 듯 보여도 입에서 잘 안나오는 문장, 

not yet,  not up yet, not even up yet…

부사 위치가 애매한 문장 눈으로 살펴보고 입으로도 연습해 봅니다.

 

*come to ~에 다다르다, ~에 이르다

*come to an end 끝나다

*come to a stop 끝나다, 서다

*come to a halt 정지하다, 멈추다

 

come to +  a stop→ come to a stop 끝나는 것에 다다르고,

come to + a halt → come to a halt 정지하는 것에 다다르고,

come to + an end → come to an end 끝나는 것에 다다르고,

 

Slowly the feast came to an end.(27-9/63p)

The firing came to an end.(21-7/46p) 

Slowly the feeding came to a stop.(26-8/49p)

The wagon came to a halt.(21-6/45p)

 

-모두 같은 문장 구조를 가지고 있지요.

지금껏 여러번 나왔고, 앞으로도 또 나와요.

*a bit of 소량의 ..., 한 조각의...

*bits of 조그마한, 하찮은

-똑 떨어지는 양이 아니라 그냥 조금의 의미로 자주 쓰이는 ‘a bit of’

영어를 자연스럽게 구사할 때 kind of, sort of…처럼 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 표현

-냅킨으로 손 닦고, 얼굴도 닦고^^ 

입 닦는 거겠죠? 

 

*kiss/ knock/ hit 키스하다, 때리다, 치다 + on the 신체일부 

She kissed Priscilla on the cheek.(27-9/63p)

-키스하거나 치거나 하려면 어떤 면(표면)에 해야하니 전치사 on 사용하는 것 눈여겨 봐주세요. 

 

As they passed the cornfield, the dried stalks swayed in the breeze.(27-9/65p) 

-가을날, 살며시 부는 바람에 흔들리는 갈대

그 장면이 절로 떠올라요.

-추수감사절 편에서는’ look up’이  올려다보다, 찾아보다의 두 가지 의미로 고루고루 쓰였어요. 문맥에 따라 봐주세요. 

 

*be eager to ~하고 싶은 생각이 간절하다, ...을 하고 싶어하다, 굴뚝같다

*get going 떠나다, 출발하다, ...하기 시작하다

-원어민들은 좋아하는 get 동사

get이 들어감으로써 그 상태를 보여주는 문장이 된다고 해요. 

 

 *관계대명사 what 모음

Remember what you felt today.(27-9/68p) 

Priscilla, please tell the young folk what they must do.(27-4/26p)

-모험 전후로 시간이 전혀 흐르지 않았음을 표현하는 문장이이에요.

As always, no time at all had passed in Frog Creek.(27-10/71p) 

 

*rattle 달가닥[덜거덕] 거리다, 덜컹거리다, 딸랑이

As they started through the woods, a warm wind blew, rattling the leaves.

-바람이 나뭇잎을 흔들 때 rattle, 방울뱀은 rattle snake

 

*look forward to ...을 기대하다, 즐거운 마음으로 기다리다

*worst of all 무엇보다도 나쁜 것은
