[매직문장] 12권-1 Are You Serious?

• He didn’t want to be left behind.
• In a split second, Annie was out of bed.
• I'll get Annie.
• The moon lit their way as they ran down their street.
• Jack jumped in fear.

 

*간단하면서 쓰임이 다양한 get 

"I'll get Annie."(12-1/2p) 

 애니 데려올께. get 하나로 끝~ 

 

*’stir 약간 움직이다’ 또 나왔어요~ 

-to wake up or begin to move or take action.

-to cause something to move slightly.

 

Jack shook her and she stirred.(12-1/2p) 

The big lion stirred lazily.(11-9/62p) 

 

Jack jumped out of bed and hurried to Annie’s room.(12-1/2p) 

In a split second, Annie was out of bed.(12-1/2p) 

 

*out of bed 잠자리에서 일어나다

*out of the bed 침대에서 나오다

 

잠자려는 목적이 아니고, 침대에 걸터앉았거나 했다가 나오는 경우에 the를 붙여요.

요즘 날씨가 추워지니 아침에 일어나기 힘들어요. 제가 요즘 자주 쓰는 표현이에요.  

It's really hard to get out of bed in the morning because it's getting cold.

 

*in a split second 눈 깜짝할 사이에

애니가 얼마나 빨리 일어났을지 상상되는 문장이에요. 

 

현관 불빛 주변에서 춤추는 나방 상상됩니다. 

Moths danced around the porch light.(12-1/4p)  

 

참고로 하루살이는 dayfly, mayfly

하루살이 신세는 life of a dayfly

 

Jack’s sister Annie, always seemed to know what birds and animals were saying.(12-1/2p)  

How did Annie know exactly what the owl said?(12-1/4p)  

 저도 잭처럼 너무 궁금합니다~ 

 

[매직문장] 12권-2 The Howling

• But sometimes I bring out the courage in you.
• He clutched his pack against his chest and blew on his fingers.
• He was too cold to write any more.

 

*crisp (공기나 날씨가) 상쾌한

The air was crisp and cold.(12-2/10p)

+)a crisp winter morning 상쾌한 겨울 아침

 

*yip (강아지 따위가)낑낑거리다

*yelp (개,늑대 따위가)날카롭게 짖다

*whine 우는 소리를 하다, 낑낑거리다

 

It was mixed with yipping and yelping noises.(12-2/14p)

They whined and yelped.(12-2/15p)

 - 개들이 우는 소리를 다양한 단어로 표현하고 있어요. 

 

*get ~er/ grow ~er 책에 표시해 봅니다. 

In early spring, snow falls, but the sky begins to get lighter. (12-2/12p)

It's getting darker and colder.(12-2/14p)

The howling got louder and louder.(12-2/15p)

When he got closer, he counted nine Siberian Huskies.(12-2/22p)

+) The howling grew louder.(12-2/14p)

 

*pack (같은 동물의) 한 떼, 일당, 한패

We’re freezing, and now a pack of wolves is coming for us.(12-2/15p)

 

지난주 11권에서 pride가 ‘떼, 무리’ 의미로 나왔었죠. 하나씩 더해가 봅니다~ 

After a pride of lions has eaten, they rest for a few hours. (11-9/58p)  

They got closer and closer to the tree house-and closer and closer to the pride of lions.(11-9/63p) 

 

예전에 잠깐 소개해 드렸던 구문 복습 겸 다시 같이 살펴봅니다. 

He was too cold to write any more.(12-2/14p)

Jack couldn't stand it any longer.(12-2/15p)

 

*too ~ to 너무 ~해서 ~ 할 수 없다

*too ~ to any more 더 이상 ~할 수 없다

*not ~ anymore= not ~ any longer= no longer

 

과거의 상태나 행동이 더 이상 계속되지 않는다는 걸 의미합니다. any longer나  anymore는 부정문에서 문장의 맨 끝에 위치합니다.

영어회화에서는 주로 anymore나 any longer을 사용하고 no longer이 좀더 formal한 표현이고요. 미국식 영어에서는 anymore 한 단어로 붙여 쓰는 것도 눈여겨 봐 주세요. 영국식 영어는 any more로 사용합니다. 

 

 

[매직문장] 12권-3 Mush!

• The small window would be a tight fit.
• He wiggled his frozen fingers into the warm mittens.
• The snow was still drifting down.
• He went out headfirst and barely squeezed through.
• The huskies dashed off in a whirl of snow.

 

 

*pass, give, hand 

주다, 무언가를 건네줄 때

He passed one to Jack and one to Annie.

The seal hunter was giving Annie a pair of fur pants.

Then he handed a pair to Jack.(12-3/19p) 

 

+)  hold out 

건네준 건 아니고 건네주려고 손을 뻗은 것

 

한국말로는 바지 한 벌, 부츠 한 켤레… 이런 식으로 굳이 얘기하지 않지요. 그런데 영어에서는 이렇게 해야 정확한 표현이 됩니다. 반드시 복수형으로 써야 합니다. 

바지 두 벌, 세 벌…  

수량으로 나타내고 싶으면,

a pair of~/ two pairs of~ 식으로 표현합니다. 

 

a pair of pants 바지 한 벌

two pairs of pants 바지 두 벌 

a pair of boots 부츠 한 켤레

a pair of mittens 장갑 한 짝

 

바지가 pants만 있는 게 아니죠. 하의를 뜻하는 단어는 모두 복수형태 입니다. shorts, jeans, trousers, trunks, pajamas, leggings, sweatpants, overalls, slacks 모두 이렇게 복수형으로 씁니다. 그러면 신발도 마찬가지겠지요. 부츠, 슬리퍼, 구두 등등이요. 

shoes (신발), glasses (안경), scissors (가위) 등등도 늘 복수형으로 써야 합니다. 

 

*fit (모양・크기가 어떤 사람・사물에) 맞다, 꼭 맞다

He was so fat in his furry clothes that the backpack wouldn't fit. Jack loosened shoulder straps and tried to put the backpack on again. It fits.(12-3/22p) 

 

*a tight fit 꼭 끼는

The small window would be a tight fit.(12-3/22p) 

 

*drift down 눈이 쌓이면서 내리는 모습

The snow was still drifting down.

The air was misty white.(12-3/22p) 

눈오는 겨울날 이렇게 표현해보고 싶어요. 

 

* dash off 급히 떠나다

-to go away from a place in a hurry

The huskies dashed off in a whirl of snow.(12-3/23p)

 

dash 황급히 달려 감, 돌진, 질주 

dash off를 쓰니 hurry up 보다 더 급박함이 느껴져요. 

생생한 장면이 그려집니다~

 

[매직문장] 12권-4 Snow House

• Then his gaze fell on the two bear masks.
• But I know that's pretend.
• Just as the seal has given us many gifts, so has the polar bear.
• He pulled off his mitten just long enough to write.
• They watched as the seal hunter moved out.

그는 글씨를 쓸 수 있을 정도 벙어리장갑을 잠깐 벗고 적었다.

 

북극곰으로부터 음식, 옷, 도구, 칼, 바늘 등을 많은 것을 얻어냅니다. 그러자 애니가  북극곰이 너무 불쌍하다고 하자 사냥꾼이 명언을 남깁니다. 

 

They are not poor, he said. They help us because they know we would die without them.

In return, we always thank the animal spirits.(12-4/28p)

 

*give만으로 간단히 통하는 의미

I mean, can you give us some facts?(12-4/30p)

 

자연과 사람이 어울려 사는 법을 배워 봅니다. 

This is how my father taught me to hunt seal, as his father taught him.(12-4/30p) 

할아버지가 아버지에게 가르쳐 주듯, 나의 아버지가 나에게 가르쳐주시고… 세대를 이어 내려오는 자연의 법칙…

*gaze fell on ~을 응시하다, 시선이 쏠리다

Then his gaze fell on the two bear masks.(12-4/32p) 

앞으로도 이 구문이 계속 나와요. 

 

*get a better look 더 잘 보이다

He picked them up to get a better look.(12-4/32p) 

Jack hurried over the bumpy coral to get a better look.(9-2/13p) 

 

[매직문장] 12-5 You're It!

• She was laughing so hard that she couldn't stand.
• He went back down onto his knees.
• They were on their backs, sliding down the bank onto the ice-covered sea.

 

 

간혹 곰들이 아이들처럼 놀이터나 바닷가에 와서 놀다가는 클립들을 보곤 했는데 북극곰도 그런가봐요. 저리 같이 뛰어다니며 놀고, 눈더미에서 바다로까지 미끄럼타고 그러면 정말 신날 듯 해요. 

 

그림 속 roly-poly (오동통한, 땅딸막한) 아가곰들이 어찌나 사랑스러운지요.

 

*scamper 날쌔게 움직이다

Then they scampered toward Annie, who rushed to greet them.(12-5/33p)

They pushed Jack and Annie over and scampered away.(12-5/35p)

 

정말 간단한 문장인데 입에서 안나오는 문장

오늘 같이 외웁시다요~! 

She was nowhere in sight.(12-5/34p)

 

She was laughing so hard that she couldn't stand.(12-5/34p) 

얼마나 재미있었으면 서있기도 힘들정도로 웃었을까 싶어요. 

 

*You're it!(12-5/34p)

네가 술래야! 

술래잡기는 tag/ 술래는 it, tagger라고 한대요.

Annie lay on her back.(12-5/37p) 등대고 누운 모습

Jack rolled onto his side.(12-5/38p)옆으로 구르는 모습

 

볼 때마다 헷갈리는 동사, 그래서 또 살펴보는 동사

 

lie 눕다, 누워 있다, 놓여 있다(자동사)

 +) lie-lay-lain

 

여기서 모두 과거형으로 lay가 쓰였죠. 

The cubs lay perfectly still.(12-5/35p)

Annie lay on her back.(12-5/37p)

Jack and Annie looked up at the orange moon as they lay beside the cubs.(12-5/38p)

She carefully lay back down.(12-5/39p)

 

*ring out  크게 울리다
