부사 위치가 애매해서 통으로 외우는 게 좋은 문장이에요.

-새벽이 어둠을 break한다, 재밌는 표현이에요.

-peek이랑 peep는 끝이 무성음(발음할 때 목청이 떨리지 않음)으로 ‘k 크/ p프’ 하고 빨리 발음되지요.

*loom 어렴풋이 보이다

A huge castle loomed out of the fog.(2-2/14p) 

loom은 fog하고 잘 어울리는 단어에요. 

 

*yank 확[홱] 잡아 당기다

-If you yank someone or something somewhere, you pull them there suddenly and with a lot of force.

*examine 관찰하다, 탐구하다, 연구하다 

We have to examine the situation from home.

잭이 집에 돌아가서 이것들을 좀 더 연구(?)해 봐야한다고 하니 행동파 애니는 "여기서 탐구해보자!"라고 해요. 

 

*hold (손팔 등으로) 잡다[쥐다]

*hold out (손 등을) 내밀다

손을 잡을 때는 hold

손을 내밀때는 hold out

이제 너무 익숙한 hold out,

앞으로도 계속해서 나오는 구문이에요. 

 

*sort of <부사적 표현> 다소, 얼마간, 말하자면

본문장 I like music.에 sort of와 같은 부가적인 표현이 더해지면 영어를 말할 때 좀 더 풍성하게 표현할 수 있어요. 그래서 라이브 아카데미 빨간 모자쌤께서는 부가적인 표현을 하나의 단어처럼 외우라고 하세요.

 

가방에 넣고, 꺼낼 때 쓰는 표현 정리해 봅니다.

[매직문장] 2권-3 Across the Bridge

• The bridge goes to the castle.
• A helmet alone could weigh up to forty pounds.
• A piercing shriek split the air.
• Then she vanished through the gate leading to the castle.
• A drawbridge crossed the moat.
• I want to see what's really going on, Jack.
• Not what's in the book. 
• It showed boys his age carrying trays of food.

 

*foggy 안개가 낀, 뿌옇다, (기억, 의식 등이) 가물가물하다

Annie was under the tree, looking across the foggy ground.(2-3/17p)

 

안개 낀 것 뿐 아니라 눈이 뿌옇다, 기억이 가물가물할 때도 fog를 사용해요. 

+) Why is it foggy? 왜 뿌옇지?

+) My eyes are foggy. 눈이 뿌예요.

    머리가 혼란스럽고 안개같이 뿌예서 분명하게 생각하거나 표현하지 못하는 상태. 신경이나 인지적 문제임

-at이라는 전치사는 한 지점을 콕 찍는, 딱 그것을 가리키는 느낌이 있어요.

point at vs. point를 비교해 보세요. 

 

*pierce  뚫다, 찌르다 

*split the air  하늘(허공)을 가르다

pierce를 보고 피어싱을 떠올려봐요.

*sound like ~처럼 들리다

It sounded like it came from that little house over there!(2-3/21p)

dash라는 동사가 어느 전치사를 만나느냐에 따라 의미가 확실해지죠.

-눈으로 보면 이해가 쉽게 되는 문장형태인데 입에서는 잘 안나와요.

• Torches lit the high wall around the courtyard.

• He whirled around.
• Then they ran as fast as they could down a dimly lit hallway.
• I wonder which one is the knight.
• Men and women dressed in capes and furs sat at long, crowded wooden tables.

 

*get 비교급: 더 ~해지다

It was getting darker.(2-4/24p)

The light got dimmer and dimmer.(2-7/46p)

The wind got louder and louder.(2-9/61p) 

 

*creak 삐걱거리다

-If something creaks, it makes a short, high-pitched sound when it moves.

The wooden planks creaked under his feet.(2-4/24p)

The door creaked shut behind them.(2-5/30p)

 

-문이 끼익 소리를 내면서 닫혔다, 열렸다 하는 거잖아요. 

The door creaked shut. The door creaked open. 

묘사할 때 정말 유용할 것 같아요.

 

*peer 자세히 보다, 응시하다

He peered over the edge of the bridge.(2-4/24p)

He peered into the darkness.(2-4/26p)

Look!" said Annie, peering through the mist.(2-3/19p)

Jack peered down at the valley.(1-8/48p)

She was peering out the tree house window.(1-2/6p)

-peer의 r은 유성음(목청이 떨림)으로 ‘r 러’로 좀더 길게 발음되니 자세히 보고, 응시하는 걸로 기억하기로 했쥬~

 

*wave at ~에게 손을 흔들다

She waved at him.(2-4/26p) 

 -어제에 이어 전치사 at에 주목해 봅니다.

어느 한 지점을 콕 찍는, 딱 그것을 가리킬 때 쓰는 전치사 at이에요. 여기서는 그(잭)를 콕 찍어서 손을 흔들었어요. 

 

*wave back  손을 흔들어 신호에 답하다

Jack waved back.(2-4/26p) 

잭은 손을 흔들어 신호에 답했다. 

 

*slip (특히 들키지 않고) 살짝 가다(오다), 미끄러지다

*hang 걸다, 매달다, 걸리다, 매달리다

Antlers and rugs hung on the stone walls.(2-4/27p)

-‘러그가 걸려있다’라면 be hung 일거 같은데 그냥 hung을 사용해요. 

hang이 자동사/타동사 모두 쓰여요. 

그래서 그냥 rugs hung on the stone walls로 간단히 표현해요. 

자동사란 <주어+동사>만으로 완벽한 문장 형태를 만들어주는 동사를 말해요.

 

*in …을 입은 

Boys in short dresses carried huge trays of food.(2-4/27p)

People in bright clothes and funny hats strooled among the crowd.(2-4/27p)

Men and women dressed in capes and furs sat at long, crowded wooden tables.(2-4/27p)

 

' ...을 입은'을 표현할 때,  wearing말고 전치사  in 으로 해결

뼈다귀를 가지고 싸운다는 의미로 fighting over bones 

 

*stroll 한가롭게 거닐다

• The voices are getting closer.
• It's where armor and weapons are stored.
• Jack lay on the floor in the dark.

 

*dash (급히) 서둘러 가다(rush), 황급히[맹렬히] 달려감, 돌진, 질주

Then he dashed to the well.(2-4/26p)

 

*dash toward ... 쪽으로 급히 달려가다

Annei dashed toward a door off the hallway.(2-5/30p)

 

*dash across ~을 급히 건너다

He saw Annie dashing across the real drawbridge.(2-3/23p)

*dash down 급히 내려가다

1권부터 계속해서 나오는 동사 dash,

여기저기 존재감 알리느라 급해서 서둘러 돌진하는 동사 dash, 이번에 확실히 기억해 봅니다. 

dash라는 동사가 어느 전치사를 만나느냐에 따라 의미가 더 확실해지죠.

학창시절 <grab/hold+ by the 신체부위>라고 공식처럼 외웠는데 입에서는 안나오는 게 함정이죠.
