[줍줍매직문장] 28권-6 Shake-up

• Now he was cross with Morgan.
• Jack jerked it away from her. He slipped and fell onto the sand. 
• The best thing to do is to go right back out.
• He did feel sorry, but he was too upset to say so.
• But how the heck are we supposed to do that?

 

*mad at oneself 자기자신에게 화가 나다

He felt shaky and mad at himself.(28-6/46p)

-스스로에게 화가 날 때가 있죠. 

콕 집어서 전치사 at

그래서 at oneself 

 

*should have p.p: ~했어야 했는데 하지 못했다

-말하는 시점(보통 현재)에서 과거 사실에 대한 후회나 유감을 나타냅니다. 

I never should have tried to stand!(28-6/46p)

I guess I should have let you do a little more research on this place.(24-2/17p) 

I knew we should have brought a flashlight.(8-1/7p) 

 

+) I should’ve called my mom. 엄마한테 전화했어야 했는데(못했다).

*hard (부사) 세게, 강력하게, 힘들게/ (형용사) 단단한, 굳은, 딱딱한, 어려운

*fall hard 세게[심하게] 넘어지다

*laugh hard 지나치게[심하게] 웃다

*blow hard 심하게 불다

*stare hard 뚫어지게 쳐다보다 =look hard

-hard가 (부사)로도 많이 쓰여요. 

문장 안에서 부사 위치도 같이 확인해 주세요. 

 

-hard하게 fall하니 세게[심하게] 넘어지다

-hard하게 laugh하니 심하게 웃다

-hard하게 blow하니 심하게 불다

-hard하게 stare하니 뚫어지게 쳐다보다

 

*I told you 내가 말했잖아

*burn 후끈거리다, 타다, 화상

His eyes and nose burned from the salt water.(28-6/47p)

It made Jack’s eyes burn.(24-8/55p) 

His throat burned.(24-8/55,56p) 

-바닷물이 눈과 코에 들어가도 괴롭지요. 

이때도burn을 사용하네요.

 

*snap (말투가 날카로운 모양) 탁 쏘다, 딱[툭](하고) 부러지다

“Why are you laughing?” Jack snapped.(28-6/47p) - 탁 쏘다

A tree branch snapped.(27-2/15p)-부러지다

She snapped the reins.(21-5/40p)- 고삐를 죄다

 

-‘snap one's reins 고삐를 죄다’의 형태 익숙하죠. 

snap도 문맥에 따라 살펴보는 연습을 해 봅니다. 

 

*cross 짜증난, 약간 화가 난, 교차하다[엇갈리다]

*be cross with 심술을 부리다

Now he was cross with Morgan.(28-6/48p)

 

+)cross (표정이) 살짝 스치다

A big smile crossed Jack's face.(20-1/4p) 

A look of horror crossed the man's kind face.(14-2/13p) 

-cross ‘(가로질러) 건너다’라는 대표적인 뜻 말고도 

‘화가 난, 살짝 스치다’라는 의미로도 자주 쓰여요. 문장 안에서 쓰임 확인해 봅니다.

아이들 그림책에 보면 화난다 의미로 cross가 많이 쓰여요. 

 

*crash over 와르르 전복하다[무너지다], 충돌하다

*wash away ~을 쓸어가다[유실되게 하다]

Then it returns in a gigantic wave that crashes over the land and washes everything away.(28-6/50p)

-각각의 동사에 over와 away가 붙어 느낌을 더 살려주고 있어요. 

 

*might be ~일지도 모르다

A tsunami might be coming!(28-6/50p) 

+) That might be difficult. 그건 힘들거야. 

+) He might be useful to us. 그가 우리에게 도움이 될지도 모른다. 

+) I’d be the first to admit I might be wrong.

     제가 틀렸을지도 모른다는 것을 제가 맨 먼저 인정하겠어요.

 

[줍줍매직문장] 28권-7 Ride for Your Lives!

• He yelled at the top of his lungs.
• Jack gripped the sides of his board as he zoomed along with the other. 
• I have to get them to come to me!
• The swell of the wave picked them up.

 

*for one's life 필사적으로, 목숨 걸고, 열심히

Ride for Your Lives!

Swim for your life!(9-8/49p)  

He was swimming for his life-and for Annie's life, too.(9-8/49p)  

They ran for their lives.(6-7/44p)

*once (일단)...하면, …하자마자

Once he was past them, he threw himself on his board and paddled wildly.(28-7/52p)

Once I’m at the top, you can come after me.(15-2/16p)

 

*swell (바다의 큰) 너울(=바다의 크고 사나운 물결)

The wave swells grew as he paddled.(28-7/52p)

The swell of the wave picked them up.(28-7/53p) 

-swell하면 붓다, 부풀다라는 동사가 먼저 떠오르는데

여기서는 명사로 큰파도라는 뜻으로 쓰이고 있어요. 

 

*come to ~에 다다르다, 이르다

I have to get them to come to me.(28-7/53p) 

-너무나 익숙한 구문 come to 

 장소에 다다를 뿐 아니라 사람에게 다다르고, 이르게 할 때도 come to

 

*at the top of one's lungs (목청이 터지도록) 큰 소리로, 목청껏, 소리 지르며

-주의할 점 lungs는 꼭 복수형태로 쓰세요. 우리 몸에 폐는 두 개

=at the top of one's voice

-extremely loudly, as loudly as possible

 

"HELP! HELP!" he yelled at the top of his lungs.(28-6/50p)  

+) She shouted his name at the top of her lungs. 

   그녀는 그의 이름을 고래고래 소리질렀어.

+) He was screaming at the top of his voice. 

    그는 목청껏 비명을 질러 댔어.

 

*here come 온다

Here comes a wave!(28-7/53p)

Here come the discus and javelin throwers.(16-6/39p) 

 

Here come을 보니 비틀즈의 노래

*snatch up 잡아채 올리려 하다, 낚아채다

He snatched up his board and ran onto the sand.(28-7/54p)  

 

*pull away 움직이기 시작하다[떠나다

The water around Annie started to pull away.(28-7/54p)

 

+)pull away 몸을 빼다

+)pull away from something 움직이기 시작하다

She pulled away from Jack and jumped out of the boat.(22-7/52p)   

Annie pulled away.(14-7/40p)

-몸을 빼다의 의미도 가지고 있어요.

[줍줍매직문장] 28권-8 The Big Wave

• The four of them bolted back from the edge of the rocky slope.
• When the water rolled back over the cliff, they all hurried back to the edge to see what had happened. 
• Water sprayed over the top of the rocks and rained down on them.
• He hugged Kama and Boka and their parents and lots of other people he didn't even know. 
• A wave was rising up like a dark mountain of water.

 

*flop 털썩 떨어지다, 털썩 주저앉다

 Suddenly fish flopped on the bare sand.(28-8/55p) 

Then he flopped himself down.(10-7/51p) 

-10권 카우보이편에서 잭이 부츠도 못 벗고 피곤해서 털썩 쓰러져 잠든던 장면에서도 flop이라는 단어를 썼었죠.

 

*surge 큰파도, 크게 굽이치는 파도, 파도가 일다, (재빨리) 밀려들다

*grow 비교급: 점점 더 ~ 해지다

It came surging toward the shore, growing even taller!(28-8/57p) 

The sky was growing bluer as they watched.(18-2/11p)

The sound of the waves against the rocks grew louder.(15-7/47p) 

The wet dog smell grew stronger.(7-3/20p)

 

*get back 돌아오다, 되찾다

“Get back!” shouted Boka.(28-8/58p) 

“Now get back in the boat,” said George Washington.(22-8/58p)

 

▶to 방향성-일방적으로 가는 방향과 도착

+) get back to ~에게 나중에 다시 연락하다

-I’ll get back to him. 다시 전화할게. 

 

▶at 콕 짚어서 누구, 어디- 딱 그것을 가리키는 느낌/ 자극을 받고 반응을 보이는 관계 

+) get back at 복수하다

-I’ll get back at him. 복수할거야.

 

*bolt 뛰어나가다, 도망가다(out), 달아나다, 급하게 떠나다, 벗어나다

*bolt back 황급히 뒤로 물러나다

The four of them bolted back from the edge of the rocky slope.(22-8/58p)

 

*crash against  ...와 부딪치다

The mountain of water crashed against the cliff.(22-8/58p) 

-절벽에 부딪치는 느낌이 against와 잘 어울리죠?

 

*spray over ... 위에 뿌리다[뿜다]

*rain down on ...에 (비 오듯) 쏟아지다

Water sprayed over the top of the rocks and rained down on them.(22-8/58p) 

 

*back out 빠지다, 철회하다

*take ~ with ~와 가지고 가다/ 소지의 의미를 나타내는 with

The gigantic wave was moving back out to sea, taking rocks, sand, seaweed, seashells, and the surfboards with it.(28-8/58p)

I have mine with me.(17-1/6p) 내껀 잘 챙겼어.

+) Take an umbrella with you. 우산 가져가! 

+) I don’t have money with me. 지금 소지한 돈이 없다란 의미, 거지아니에요.

 

*make it (어려운 일을) 해내다, 성공하다, (간신히) 시간 맞춰가다

We just made it.(22-8/58p) 

The sub can make it.(9-7/43p) 

+) make it big 크게 성공하다

+) Make it happen! 해보자! 

+) He’s hoping to make it big on TV. 그는 텔레비전에서 크게 성공하고 싶어한다. 

+) I can't make it, unfortunately. 유감이지만 난 (거기에) 갈 수가 없어. 

 

*run into 맞닥뜨리다, 뛰어 들어가다, ~와 우연히 만나다

The two Hawaiian kids ran into their parents’ arms.(28-8/59p) 

They ran into the alley and crouched on the ground.(24-7/50p) 

Just then, Annie ran into Jack’s room.(18-1/3p) 

Annie ran into the Frog Creek woods.(6-1/3p)

[줍줍매직문장] 28권-9 Telling the Story

• Then Jack surprised himself.
• Sometimes you ride low, gentle waves. Sometimes you ride high, rough ones. 
• Our mother says friendship is like riding the waves.
• The next thing he knew, he was stepping from side to side.

 

*die down 차츰 잦아들다[약해지다/희미해지다]

Finally, the hugging and crying and laughing died down.(22-9/59p)

The noise died down.(23-8/56p) 

 

cf) die away 서서히 사라지다, 잦아들다

Then the sound of the hailstones died away.(23-6/42p)

-die라는 동사에 down/ away를 붙여 더 생생한 느낌을 전해주고 있어요. 

 

It tells about~ 에 관한 이야기이다

It tells about the big waves in here.(28-9/61p)

+) It tells about the life and struggles of a family. 

   이 소설은 한 가족의 삶과 악전 고투에 관한 이야기이다.

 

*in time 박자(리듬)을 맞추어[to, with]

*to the music  음악에 맞춰

*in time to the music 음악에 박자를 맞추어서

Boka, Kama, and Annie waved their hands in time to the music.(28-9/62p)

Most of villagers were dancing to the music.(28-2/14p)

A young couple danced to the music.(17-4/34p)

+) to the fast music  빠른 음악에 맞춰

 

*surprised oneself 자기자신도[스스로도] 놀라다

Then Jack surprised himself.(28-9/62p)

-자기자신도 놀랐다는 표현은 surprised oneself로…

 

▶재귀대명사

-주어와 목적어가 같은 대상일 때 목적어 자리에 옵니다. 주어와 목적어를 강조하기 위해 쓰입니다. 

매직트리하우스에 여러번 나와서 이제 익숙한 문장형태지요.

그런데 재귀대명사를 실제 대화상황에서 사용하기가 어려워요.

 

*the next thing I know 깨닫고 보니, 정신을 차리고 보니, 어느 틈엔가

The next thing he knew, he was stepping from side to side.(28-9/62p)

The next thing I know, I'm a mustang herder.(10-8/59p)

 

*burst out (laughing) 웃음을 터트리다

She and Jack burst out laughing.(28-9/65p)

Annie burst out laughing.(19-2/11p) 

 

cf) crack up 웃음을 터뜨리다, 마구 웃기 시작하다

 = to start laughing a lot = to make somebody laugh a lot

They cracked up laughing.(28-3/21p) 

Jack cracked up laughing.(26-8/55p)

-burst out laughing/ cracke up laughing

(웃음이) 빵 터지는 아이들 모습, 상상만으로도 기분 좋아요. 

 

*admit (무엇이 사실임을 마지못해) 인정[시인]하다, 자백하다

Finally, you admit it.(28-9/67p)

Jack didn’t want to admit he was afraid.(21-5/40p)

Jack had to admit the mouse was cute.(5-1/8p) 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 28-10 Everyday Magic

• You only have to live your life to the fullest.
• Our most exciting challenges are yet to come? / In that moment, it seemed the best magic of all. 
• Listen carefully to what I’m about to tell you.
• You never have to look far to find it.

*at all [부정문에서] 조금도 (...아니다)

*no 명사 at all/ not 동사 at all 일절 ...하지 않다

 

No time at all had passed in Frog Creek.(28-10/68p) 

As always, no time at all had passed in Frog Creek.(27-10/71p) 

No time at all had passed since they'd left.(9-10/64p) 

No time will have passed.(8-1/4p) 

No time at all had passed in Frog Creek.(5-10/64p)

-모험 전후로 시간이 전혀 흐르지 않았음을 표현하는 문장이이에요. 

이렇게 시간이 흐르지 않았으면 좋겠어요. ‘시간아, 멈추어다오~’‘

 

*listen carefully 주의해서 듣다, 귀를 기울이다

*be about to 막 ...하려는 참이다, ~할락 말락 하다

*what I’m about to tell you 내가 말하려는 것, 관계대명사 what

Listen carefully to what I’m about to tell you.(28-10/68p) 

 

▶띄어쓰기로 품사가 달라지는 every day와 everyday

*every day <부사>  매일 (매일) = every single day

*everyday <형용사> 일상적인, 매일의

-두 단어가 헷갈린다면 띄어쓰기하는 every day는  매일 (매일)로 기억하세요. 

 

*every day <부사>  매일 (매일) = every single day

You have learned to find the magic in things you encounter on earth every day.(28-10/71p) 

+) I work out almost every day. 난 거의 매일 매일 운동해. 

 

*everyday <형용사> 일상적인, 매일의

There are many other forms of everyday magic. (28-10/71p) 

There’s another kind of everyday magic, he thought, the magic of family.(28-10/71p) 

 

+) She longed for something to relieve the tedium of everyday life. 

   그녀는 일상생활의 지루함을 덜어 줄 뭔가를 갈구했다.

-a surge of  happiness란 표현 너무 좋아요. 

멀리계신 부모님 생각도 나고,

28권까지 이렇게 함께 매직낭독했다 사실에 감동이 파도처럼 밀려와요. 

 

*in that moment 그 순간(에)

*the best of all 그 중에서 가장 좋은[최고인] 것
