*over to ~로 넘어가서

-You can use 'over to' indicate a particular position or place a short distance away from someone or something.

-다시 잭과 애니, 피터와 앤드류가 만나 부츠를 돌려받을 수 있을지 없을지 모르지만

give가 아닌 lend를 씀으로써 피터와 앤드류가 좀더 편안히 부츠를 빌려신을 수 있지 않았나 싶어요. 

 

◈lend vs. borrow

*lend 빌려주다, give와 유사 

-내 물건이 나가는 것(비용발생하지 않음)

1) lend + 사람 + 물건

Can you lend me 10 dollars? 

Can you lend me your phone? 

 

2) lend 물건 + to 사람: 물건을 강조하고 싶을 때 

Can you lend 10 dollars to me? 

Can you lend your phone to me? 

 -give me 그냥 빌려줌/ lend me 빌려주고 갚아야 함

 

*borrow 빌리다, 빌려오다,  take와 유사

-내 쪽으로 물건이 오는 것(비용발생하지 않음, 그렇지만 돌려줘야 함)

1) borrow + 빌리고 싶은 물건: 내가 빌려올 수 있을까? 주어를  I, 나로 잡아야 함

Can I borrow a pen? 펜 좀 빌려줄래? 

Can I borrow your car? 차 좀 빌려줄 수 있어? 

 

2) borrow + 물건 from 빌린 장소/ 사람: ~에서 빌리다

+) I borrowed a book from the library. 도서관에서 책 빌렸어.

+) I borrowed a bag from Annie. 애니한테 가방 빌렸어. 

 

cf) rent 빌려오다, 빌려주다(비용을 지불해야 함)

+) I have to rent a car for two days.

 

*still less ...은 더 말할 것도 없다, 더더구나 ... 아니다

There is no water and still less soap.(24-6/45p)

 

+) No explanation was offered, still less an apology. 

  아무런 해명도 없었다, 사과는 말할 것도 없고. 

+) He has no daily necessities, still less luxuries. 

   그에게는 일상필수품조차 없다, 하물며 사치품은 말할 것도 없다. 

+) If you don't know, still less do I. 네가 모를진대, 하물며 내가 알 턱이 없지. 

 

*it's the only thing 그것 밖에 없다

*more than ...보다 많이, ...이상의

-꼭 외워서 쓰고 싶은 말,

◈once의 두가지 의미를 살펴봅니다. 

1. 한 번  
once or twice 한두 번
once again 한 번 더, 또 다시

 

+) Once is more than enough. 
한 번이면 충분해. 두번 다시는 경험하고 싶지 않아.

 

2. 일단 ~하면(if), …할 때
 ‘~하면’의 의미로 if만 사용하는데 once도 같이 사용해 봐요. 
+) Once it gets outside the volcano, it’s called “lava.”

    일단 그것이 화산 밖으로 나오면, "라바(용암)"라고 불린다. 

+) Once you meet her, you will like her. 그녀를 (일단) 한번 만나보면 좋아할거야.
 
+) Once destroyed, brain cells do not regenerate. 
   뇌세포는 일단 파괴되면 재생이 안된다. 

Once 접속사로서 두번째 의미에 집중해보고 일상생활에서도 써보는 연습을 해 보아요.

• We’d better be careful.
• Too stunned to say anything, Jack held up the sign with the poem about hope.

 

*(had) better (~하는 것이) 좋을 것이다(꼭 그래야 함을 뜻함) , ...하는 편이 낫다

-advisability with threat of bad result

이거 하지 않으면 큰일이 생길거다’라는 '강한 경고'의 뜻으로 had better라는 표현을 주의해서 사용해요.   

회화상에서는 had가 생략되는 경우가 많습니다.  

We’d better be careful.(24-7/48p) 

Before we do anything, I'd better check the book.(6-4/19p)

-느낌대로 움직이는 애니와 달리 책을 찾아보고, 뭔지 찾아보자며 1권부터 줄곧 잭이 쓰는 표현입니다.

 

*had가 생략되어 표현된 경우

This better be good.(1-1/2p) 이번엔 좋아야 할거야, 별거 없기만 해 봐라.

She better not be kidding.(5-1/4p)농담 안하는 게 좋아. 농담이면 디졌어.

+) You had better be on time, or we will leave without you. 

+) You had better be studying until then, OK? 

 

*try not to ~하지 않도록 하다

*try to ~하려고 노력하다

They stepped in their sock feet over the broken cobblestones, trying not to cut themselves.(24-7/48p)  

One man was trying to push a piano down the street.(24-7/48,49p) 

Everyone’s trying to save what’s important to them.(24-7/49p)

*one another (명사) 서로/ each other (명사) 서로 

on top of one another 차례로 쌓아, 차곡차곡

on top of each other 차례로 쌓아, 차곡차곡, 서로 겹쳐

-학창시절에 배운 '서로'를 뜻하는 ‘one another (셋 이상)/ each other (둘 일때) 

요즘은 딱히 이런 구분없이 사용하고, 실제 회화에서는 each other가 더 많이 쓰여요. 

 

Another man was wearing a bunch of hats, all piled on top of one another. (24-7/49p) 

Annie carefully stacked the bricks on top of each other.(24-3/21p) 

Groups of men talked excitedly to one another.(16-2/13p)

*halfway (거리·시간상으로) 중간[가운데쯤]에

  도서관은 오른쪽으로 반 블록 정도 더 내려가시면 있어요.

*run into 뛰어 들어가다, 맞닥뜨리다, ~와 우연히 만나다

-주로 애니가 이렇게 뛰어 들어가는데 다급한 상황이라 잭도 같이 뛰어들어가요. 

 

-’뛰어 들어가다’말고 갑자기 무슨 일을 맞닥뜨리게 될 때도 써요. run into 예문으로 더 살펴보아요. 

+) Let me know if you run into any problems. 무슨 문제가 있으면 제게 알려주세요.

+) Be careful not to run into debt. 빚을 지게 되지 않도록 조심해라.

*rage (계속) 맹위를 떨치다, 맹렬히 계속되다

After the earthquake, while fires raged through the city, two brave children tried to give hope to others.(24-10/69p)  

 

*rock (전후・좌우로 부드럽게) 흔들리다, 마구 뒤흔들리다

- to move backwards and forwards or from side to side in a gentle way

-to move or shake violently

◈우리가 흔히 사용하는 “Let’s get going.”과 “Let’s get started.”의 차이 알아보기

-속도를 높이는 의미가 더해짐, 시간낭비하지 말자하는 성급한 어감

-지금 시작하는 것에 초점
