[매직문장]은 매직트리하우스를 하루 한 챕터씩 소리내어 읽었던 주요 문장들을 머리 속에서 구체화시키는 작업입니다. 정확하고 좋은 영어문장을 자꾸 소리내어 읽어보고, 외워두어야 익숙해져서 영어를 써야 하는 상황에서 그 표현을 쓸 수 있습니다. 매일 하루 영어공부를 마감하면서 읽어보세요.

[매직문장] 13권-6  The End Is Here

• The words at the top matched the one on their paper.
• Then, clutching the book, he tore out of the scroll room.

기존에 알고 있던 단어들의 다양한 의미를 매직트리하우스에서 확장해 나가고 있어요. 여기에 전치사와 만나 다양하게 쓰이고 있어요. 앞으로도 계속 나와요.

 

*tear 화급히 뛰어가다, 날뛰다, 내닫다, 찢다, 눈물

*tear out 성급히 나가다

-4권 해적편에 나온 이 tear도 같이 보세요. 

Jack couldn't tear himself away.(4-8/50p) 

잭은 그 보물상자에서 떠날 수가 없었다

 

*look back and forth from~ to~ 왔다갔다하며 보다

*stutter 말을 더듬다, 더듬거리다

+) stammer 말을 더듬다, (공포, 당황, 긴장 따위로 ) 말이 술술 나오지 않다

hardly ‘거의 ~ 않다’로 알고 있쥬. 아는 단어임에도 불구하고 우리 입에서는 잘 안나와요. 부정의 의미인데 오히려 문장 형태에 변화를 주지않아서 사용하기 쉬워요. 오늘은 hardly 기본 활용하는 걸 배워서 일상생활에서 써보도록 해요. 

 

나 술 잘 안마셔. 술 거의 안마셔. 

I hardly drink.= I drink hardly. = I don’t like to drink. 

 

don’t/ doesn’t/ didn’t...

인칭이나 시제 고민없이 문장에 hardly만 붙이면 되어 더 간단해요. 

사실 한국말에서도 ‘난 그거 절대 안해’ 보다 ‘잘 안해’/ ‘난 그거 거의 안해’ 라고 더 많이 쓰죠. 잘 익혀두면 유용하게 쓸 수 있어요. 

 

I hardly drink. 나 술 잘 안마셔.

I hardly have a meal. 밥 잘 안먹어.

I hardly take a nap. 낮잠 잘 안자. 

I hardly go there. 거기 잘 안가. 

I hardly watch movies. 영화 잘 안봐. 

I hardly listen to music. 음악 잘 안들어.

 

[매직문장] 13권-7 The Sky Is Falling

• A blast of heat and dust nearly knocked them over.
• ...Burning rock shot miles into the air.
• When it rained down on Pompeii, it completely buried the town.
• ...stumbled into the scroll library.
• They both pulled off the belts from around their tunics.
• The sun vanished as the sky turned smoky gray.

 

*(the) next thing one know(s) 깨닫고 보니, 정신차리고 보니, 어느틈엔가

The next thing Jack knew, he was lying on the stone patio.(13-7/47p) 

The next thing I know I'm a mustang herder.(10-8/59p) 

 

*고개 들어올릴 때 raise 

He raised his head.(13-7/47p) 

 

“Duck!” said Jack.(1-7/44p)

+)Duck your head. 고개 숙여.

 

*slosh (액체가) 철벅거리다; (용기 밖으로) 철벅 튀어 나오다

Water (from the goldfish pond) sloshed onto the patio.(13-7/48p) 

 

*blow off 날려 보내다, 폭발하다

-if something blows off, or the wind blows it off, it is removed by the force of the wind.

The whole top of the mountain had blown off.(13-7/48p) 

 

*once의 두가지 의미를 살펴봅니다. 

1. 한 번  

once or twice 한두 번

once again 한 번 더, 또 다시

 

Once is more than enough. 

한 번이면 충분해. 두번 다시는 경험하고 싶지 않아. 

 

2. 일단 ~하면(if), ...할 때

 ‘~하면’의 의미로 if를 주로 사용하는데 once도 같이 사용해 봐요. 

(일단)이란 말이 신경쓰여 활용을 잘 못하는 것 단어이기도 합니다. 

일단, (일단)을 빼보셔도 됩니다. 

 

Once it gets outside the volcano, it’s called “lava.”(13-7/49p)  

(일단) 그것이 화산 밖으로 나오면, "라바(용암)"라고 불린다. 

 

+) Once you meet her, you will like her. 

그녀를 (일단) 한번 만나보면 좋아할거야.

 

+) Once destroyed, brain cells do not regenerate. 

뇌세포는 일단 파괴되면 재생이 안된다. 

 

once 접속사로서 두번째 의미에 집중해보고 일상생활에서도 써보는 연습을 해 보아요.

+) Once you eat these IKEA cookies, you will love them!

*knock over 뒤엎다, 자빠뜨리다, 치다

A blast of heat and dust nearly knocked them over.(13-7/51p) 

 

*rain down onto/on …에 (비 오듯) 쏟아지다, 퍼붓다

When they stepped outside, pumice rained down onto their pillow hats.(13-7/53p) 

 

-mble 단어들 정리해봅니다. 

tremble(47p) 떨다, 떨리다

rumble(47p) 우르르거리는 소리를 내다,

stumble(48p) 발이 걸리다, 발을 헛디디다, 비틀[휘청]거리다

crumble(56p) 허물어지다[무너지다]

*from~ into ~에서 ~로: 같은 문장구조 봐주세요.

무시무시한 상황이 전해집니다. 

 

*pull off the belts 벨트를 풀다

They both pulled off the belts from around their tunics.(13-7/51p)  

 

 [매직문장] 13권-8 Nightmare at Noon

• Jack could hardly see, but he followed Annie.
• Jack choked on the rotten fumes. His eyes watered.
• A red-hot cloud billowed over it.
• Head in the direction of Mount Vesuvius.
• Burning rocks and fiery ash fell from the sky.

 

*in every direction 사방팔방으로, 모든 방향으로

In the forum, everyone was running in every direction.(13-8/54p)

 

*cave in 함몰하다, 꺼지다

They ran past the Public Baths just as its roof caved in.(13-8/56p)

The ground caved in, and Jack went with it.(7-6/40p)

빙하시대로 간 잭과 애니가  원시인들이 파놓은 구덩이에 파졌을 때 나왔던 cave in

 

*billow (연기・구름 등이) 피어오르다

A red-hot cloud billow d over it.(13-8/56p)

 

*The closer~, the more

The 비교급~ ,the 비교급~  구문: ~하면 할수록

The closer they got to the volcano, the more the ground trembled.(13-8/57p)

+) The more, the better.

+) The more you learn, the happier you are. 

 

*choke on 숨막히다, 질식할 지경이다

Jack choked on the rotten fumes.(13-8/57p)

 

*water (눈에서) 눈물이 나다

-if something such as wind makes your eyes water, it makes tears form in your eyes

His eyes watered.(13-8/58p)

 

-알고는 있지만 거의 쓰기 어려운 hardly 

◈hardly 거의 ~않다[...하기가 무척 어렵다]

 

+) Hardly anyone came. 

거의 아무도 오지 않았다. 

 

+) I hardly slept a wink. 

나는 거의 눈도 붙이지 못했다. 

 

+) We hardly know each other. 

우리는 서로 거의 잘 모른다. 

 

◈can/could hardly + 동사 “거의 ... 할 수 없다”

 

+) I can hardly tell.

 거의 알아볼 수 없는데. 

 

+) She could hardly keep from laughing. 

그녀는 웃음을 참기가 힘들었다. 

 

Jack could hardly see, but he followed Annie.(13-8/59p) 

잭은 거의 볼 수 없었지만, 애니를 따라갔다. 

 

+) We can hardly stop reading Magic Tree House!

 

[매직문장] 13권-9  Save us!

• Jack and Annie didn't stop to ask any questions.
• Pumice had piled up in huge drifts, like snow.
• We'll have to get through that stuff to get across.
• He held Jack with one hand and Annie with the other.
• He placed them both on the other bank of the stream.

 

*dried-up 바짝 마른

They stared at the dried-up stream.(13-9/60p) 

 

*stuck (…에 빠져) 움직일 수 없는

"I'm stuck."(13-9/61p)

 

*dazed (충격을 받거나 머리를 얻어맞거나 하여) 멍한

- If someone is dazed, they are confused and unable to think clearly, often because of shock or a blow to the head.

He was too tired and dazed.(13-9/61p)

 

+)feel dazed (충격을 받아) 멍한, 아찔한, 망연자실한 

Jack still felt dazed.(1-10/63p) 

 

*bigger than the ones they <had seen earlier>그들이 전에 봤었던 것보다 더 큰

The man looked like a gladiator-but even bigger than the ones they had seen earlier.(13-9/64p)

 

*boom 명사와 동사의 쓰임 살펴봅니다. 

"Run!" the giant gladiator boomed.(13-9/64p) 

 

- 명사 

1. (사업경제의) 붐, 호황

2. (운동음악 등의) 갑작스런 인기, 붐

 

- 동사

1. 쾅하는 소리를 내다

Outside, thunder boomed and crashed. 

밖에서 우르릉 쾅하고 천둥치는 소리가 들렸다.

 

2. 굵은[우렁우렁 울리는] 목소리로 말하다

“Get out of my sight!” he boomed. 

“내 눈 앞에서 사라져!” 그가 우렁우렁한 목소리로 말했다. 

 

3. 호황을 맞다, 번창[성공]하다

By the 1980s, the computer industry was booming. 

1980년대가 되자 컴퓨터 사업이 호황을 누렸다.

 

Jack and Annie didn't stop to ask any questions.(13-9/64p)  

한국말로 해석하니 오히려 어색한 문장, 잭과 애니는 질문을 하려고 멈추지 않았다. 즉 어떠한 것도 물을 수 없었다. 잭이랑 애니가 궁금한 게 많았을텐데 상황이 상황이다 보니 뭔가를 물어보려고 멈추지 않았다는 의미요. 

 

*charge through  ~을 뚫고 돌진하다

Together, they charged through the olive grove.(13-9/64p)  

 

charge와  through가 만나 올리브 숲을 통과해 급히 달려가는 느낌이 전달되죠. 

 

charge라는 단어는 정말 여러가지 뜻이 있어요. 

(상품서비스에 대한) 요금, 청구하다, (외상으로) 달아놓다, 신용카드로 사다, 담당하다, 충전하다, 돌격하다, 돌격, 고소, 고발 등등 

 

여러 뜻이 있어 문맥과 상황에 맞게 이해해야 해요. 매트하에서는 주로 ‘급히 가다, 달려가다’의 의미로 쓰이고 있어요.

 

+)charge down 달려 내려가다, 재빠르게 움직이다

He charged down the hill.(1-7/46p)  

 

[매직문장] 13-10 A Simple Explanation

• I can never thank you enough.
• The sound of erupting volcano still echoed in his ears.
• When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
• I feel bad for all those people.

 

*all one's life 평생

He had never been so tired in all his life.(13-10/66p)

고대 로마시대로 가서 영화 한 편 찍고 온 잭이 얼마나 피곤했겠어요. 그럴만 해요. 

 

+) I'm too tired and dazed all the time. 

그런데 저는 맨날 피곤하고 멍합니다^^ 

 

"Take off your glasses."(13-10/66p) 

이런 쉬운 문장이 나도 모르게 튀어나왔으면 좋겠다는요. 

 

*feel bad for ~를 가여워 하다, 안되게 여기다

I feel bad for all those people.” said Annie.(13-10/68p) 

 

+) I feel bad for him. 그 사람 참 안되었어. 

+) They started to feel bad for each other. 그들은 서로를 측은하게 느끼기 시작했다. 

 

cf) feel sorry for ~를 안쓰럽게[안됐다고] 여기다, 애처롭게 생각하다

Jack felt sorry for Black Hawk.(18-8/52p)

Jack felt sorry for the rhinos.(19-6/43p)

 

*grateful 고마워하는, 감사하는 

I am deeply grateful.(13-10/68p) 

Thank you very much. 말고” I am deeply grateful.” 써 볼까요?

 

*risk (…을) 걸다, 위태롭게 하다, 무릅쓰다

-If you risk your life or something else important, you behave in a way that might result in it being lost or harmed.

risk를 동사로 쓰니 간단히 표현되는 문장

 

"You risked everything to bring this to me.(13-10/68p) 

+) Risk your life. 목숨을 걸어.

+) He risked his life to save her. 그는 그녀를 구하기 위해 자기 목숨을 걸었다.

 

*세트로 함께 익혀두면 좋은 표현

I can never thank you enough. → Don't worry about it!(13-10/68p) 

Thank you so much. → You're welcome.

 

너무 고마울 때 쓸 수 있는 말들이 많죠. 부정이 들어가고, enough가 있어 뭔가 복잡해 보이지만 자세히 보면 별거 없어요. 오늘은 여기서 3개 골라서 입에 촥~ 붙여보아요.
