 [줍줍매직문장]은 매직트리하우스를 하루 한 챕터씩 소리내어 읽었던 주요 문장들을 머리 속에서 구체화시키는 작업입니다. 정확하고 좋은 영어문장을 자꾸 소리내어 읽어보고, 외워두어야 익숙해져서 영어를 써야 하는 상황에서 그 표현을 쓸 수 있습니다. 매일 하루 영어공부를 마감하면서 읽어보세요.

[줍줍매직문장] 19권-1 How Far Away?

 

• Jack let Teddy out of his pack.
• Now we have to get the gift from a forest far away.
• “That’s very far away.”
• It was on the floor, just where it had been two days ago.
• Is it time to get our third gift?
• To free him, you must be given four special things
• Teddy pawed a book in the corner.
• Teddy sneezed, as if to say, Of course!
• Let's get going, so we can free Teddy.

 

*as if to say ~라고 하는 듯이 

18권에서 나왔던 as if to say 또 나왔어요~ 

 

Teddy sneezed, as if to say, Of course!(19-1/6p) 

Teddy barked, as if to say Let's go!(18-9/67p) 

 

*let somebody out of ~에서 내보내다

동사 let과  out of(...의 안에서 밖으로)가 만난 구문

Jack let Teddy out of his pack.(19-1/7p)  

 

I wonder how far away?(19-1/8p)  

얼마나 멀까? 

I wonder를 넣어 자연스럽게 말하기 연습해봐요. 

 

Teddy pawed a book in the corner.(19-1/8p)   

강아지 테디가 책을 알려주려고 발로 긁는 모습을 상상하니 귀엽쥬~

 

Let's get going.(19-1/8p)

원어민들은 get 동사를 좋아해요. 

get이 들어감으로써 그 상태를 보여주는 문장이 된다고 해요.

 

Let's get going.= Let's go. 

Let’s get started. = Let’s start.

 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 19권-2 Kah and Ko

• Annie burst out laughing.
• It blended with the sounds of the forest.
• Then he hurried down the ladder.
• The sunset gave the trees a fiery glow.
• The langurs slowed down, as if they understood Jack’s words.
• Kah and Ko whooped as if laughing at Annie's joke.
• Jack noticed long, deep gashes in a tree as they walked by.

 

*burst with  ...으로 터질 듯 하다

The warm air burst with sound.(19-2/10p)

They swung from branch to branch.(19-2/10p)

 

*burst out 웃음을 터트리다

Annie burst out laughing.(19-2/11p) 

 

* whoop 와 하고 함성을 지르다

Kah and Ko whooped as if laughing at Annie's joke.(19-2/13p)

She whooped as she slid down the ice.(12-5/37p)

He whooped.(1-9/56p)

 

기억하시쥬? 

1권 공룡책에서부터 계속 나오고 있는 단어에요. 

 

*blend with~ 뒤섞이다

It blended with the sounds of forest.(19-2/14p)

 

*scamper 날쌔게 움직이다

*scamper after ...을 급히 쫓다

Teddy scampered after them.(19-2/15p)

scamper도 그동안 여기저기서 계속 봐 왔죠.
한번더 챙겨봅니다. 

 

*catch up with …를 따라잡다

Jack caught up with Annie.(19-2/15p)

 

*walk on 계속 걷다

They walked on through the forest.(19-2/15p) 

 

on은 부사로 무언가를 계속 하다의 의미를 가지고 있죠. 

*on <전치사> …(위)에[로](표면에 붙어있는 느낌)

       <부사> (쉬지않고) 계속하여, (계속 끊이지 않고) 죽, 다시 (계속)

 

*smell sweet 향기롭다 

The hot air smelled sweet.(19-2/15p) 

‘향기롭다, 냄새가 좋다’를 smell sweet 이라 한대요. 

 

*leave big gash 깊은 상처를 남기다

They leave big gashes in the bark.(19-2/18p)

[줍줍매직문장] 19권-3 Life or Death

• Jack's hair stood on end.
• The langurs swung through the air like trapeze artists.
• How can we get through the forest without running into him?
• They want us to copy them!
• We won’t be able to see anything.
• A tiger would eat you in a minute.
• The sky above was no longer glowing.

 

*not a shrimp-like you 아주 작다는 걸 표현

Wild dogs, not a shrimp like you.(19-3/20p)  

 

잭이 테디에게 하는 말인데, 귀엽쥬~ 

아직 테디의 활약을 보기 전 입니다^^

 

*poke out 쑥 내밀다, 비어져 나오다

Teddy's head poked out the top.(19-3/20p)

테디 머리가 쏘옥 나온 모습을 상상하니 귀엽습니다. 

 

*hair stand on end 머리끝이 쭈빗쭈빗 서다

Jack's hair stood on end.(19-3/21p) 

 

*push off 떠나다

He grabbed a branch and pushed off the ground.(19-3/21p) 

 

*get through  ...에게 [궁지 따위]를 벗어나게 하다, 빠져 나가다

*running into (곤경 등을) 만나다[겪다], ...와 우연히 만나다

How can we get through the forest without running into him?(19-3/22p)

유용한 표현! 외웁시다~

 

*not anything but 또 나왔어요~ 

He couldn't see anything but leaves and branches.(19-3/23p) 

 

*never anything but = nothing but

We could walk for months and never see anything but grass.(18-2/13p) 

 

*nothing but 오직, 그저[단지]...일 뿐인

As far as he could see, there was nothing but buffalo.(18-6/39p) 

 

*slither 스르르 기어가다, 나아가다

The snake was slithering around the trunk.(19-3/23p)

 

*curl up ~을 끝부터 감아올리다

The python kept curling up the tree trunk.(19-3/23p)

 

[줍줍매직문장] 19권-4  Swing Time

• Jack felt his stomach drop.
• From below came loud sounds of chewing, smacking, and crunching.
• The giant snake was still winding its way up the tree.
• He let go of his vine and held on tightly to a branch.
• Air rushed by. 
• Leaves and branches slapped at him.

*wind

1. [waɪnd] 구불구불하다/ winding 구불구불한

The giant snake was still winding its way up the tree.(19-4/27p) 

There was a winding stream.(1-3/13p)

 

2. [wɪnd] 바람

The wind started to blow.(19-1/8p) 

And then the wind got loud. (1-3/14p)

 

같은 단어, 쓰임에 따라 발음도 다릅니다.

 

*wind one's way 

구불구불 나아가다, 굽이굽이 흐르다

The giant snake was still winding its way up the tree.(19-4/27p) 

 

*out of something

밑줄 쫙~ 그어봅니다. 

They swung out of the tree.(19-4/28p) 

He began drifting in and out of dreams.(19-5/38p) 

Jack slowly came out of his dream.(19-6/39p) 

He hurried out of the stream.(19-6/46p) 

 

Jack felt his stomach drop.(19-4/28p) 

우리말로는 ‘간 떨어질뻔했다’, ‘가슴이 철렁했다’ 정도 같은데 stomach을 썼어요. 또 놀랄 때는 drop이란 단어를 사용해요. mouth drop 처럼요. 

 

Air rushed by.(19-4/28p) 

Air rushed. ‘바람이 불었다’에 by라는 전치사가 붙어서 뭔가 옆을 지나쳤다는 표현이 더해지고 있죠. 잭과 애니가 덩굴을 잡고 이 나무에서 저 나무로 휙 가는 중이니까 ‘바람이 스쳤다’로~ 매직트리하우스의 매력은 바로 전치사 공부입니다~!

 

His teeth shone like daggers.(19-4/28p) 칼처럼 번쩍이다

 

*barely missed ...을 피하다, 면하다

His claws barely missed Jack and Annie!

 

*trunk 

나무의 몸통, (코끼리의) 코, (여행용 가방) 트렁크, (자동차의 짐 싣는 곳) 트렁크

무심코 사용했던 trunk라는 단어가 여러 가지 뜻으로 사용되고 있었네요. 19권에서도 나무의 몸통이 되었다가 코끼리 코도 되었다가 다용도 trunk에요. 

 

또 의성어가 많이 나와요. 

chewing, smacking, crunching(19-4/29p) 

 

Let's go see.(19-4/31p) 보러가자.

 

[줍줍매직문장] 19-5 Night Walk

• He began drifting in and out of dreams.
• The elephant curled her trunk back and rested it on Jack’s head. 
• The rest of the herd followed in line.
• A chill went down Jack’s spine.
• "Our book said tigers don't attack elephants, right?"
•  The moon lit a path between the trees as the elephants marched on.
• “Kah and Ko know where to go.”

 

*but <구어> (보통 ~s) 제한, 조건: 이의, 반대; 예외

buts = ifs, ands or buts 일을 질질 끄는 이유, 구실, 핑계

No buts.(19-5/32p)

 

He put both feet on the elephant.(19-5/34p)

both를 넣어 강조의 의미가 더해졌어요.

*chatter at[to] a person ~에게 재잘재잘 말을 걸다

They chattered at her.(19-5/36p)

 

*pay no attention 개의치 않다, 소홀히 하다

The elephants paid no attention.(19-5/37p)

 

*rock = swing

Jack rocked in sleepy rhythm with Saba's walk.(19-5/38p)

 

He began drifting in and out of dreams-dreams of rocking a boat under the 

dark treetops.(19-5/38p)
