매직트리하우스 18권 줄거리 영어구문정리와 문장해석 1(챕터 1-5)

 매직트리하우스 18권 Lions at Lunchtime 챕터 6-10까지 이번주 매직낭독 1기팀의 매직문장입니다.  매직트리하우스를 하루 한 챕터씩 소리내어 읽었던 주요 문장들을 머리 속에서 구체화시키는 작업입니다. 매직낭독을 하면서 좀더 효율적인 영어 공부가 될 수 있도록 공동 영어공부 노트 [매직문장]을 만들어 가고 있습니다. 하루 한 챕터씩 매직트리하우스를 10번씩 읽으면서 자신이 외우고 싶거나 좋다고 생각되는 문장을 뽑아 정리해 나가고 있습니다. 입으로 여러번 반복 연습해서 자신만의 확실한 문장으로 만들어보세요.

[줍줍매직문장] 18권-6 Stampede!

• I have been on many hunts.
• Sunlight slowed as Black Hawk got near.
• The boy threw himself over the golden pony’s back.
• There’s no grownups around.
• They began grazing again as if nothing had happened.
• I have a feeling something bad is going to happen.
• At the beginning of the 1800s, there were 40 million bison on the Great Plains. One hundred years later, there were less than 300. Almost all had been killed by white hunters and soldiers.(18-6/39p) 

 

그당시 버팔로(들소)가 어마어마했군요. 

버팔로 40 million(4천만)-> 300 

세상에 어쩌면 이럴수가 있죠? 자연의 모든 혜택은 누리면서 파괴하는 나쁜 인간들.

 

숫자 참 어렵게 느껴지시죠. 

one million은 1,000,000(백만)이고, 

ten million이 10,000,000(천만)이에요. 

오늘은 이 두가지만 기억해봐요, 우리~ 

 

*nothing but 오직, 그저[단지]...일 뿐인

As far as he could see, there was nothing but buffalo.(18-6/39p) 

 

그림책은 아니지만 나름 그 시대의 버팔로 모습을 삽화로 잘 표현했어요. 

 

*never anything but = nothing but

We could walk for months and never see anything but grass.(18-2/13p) 

 

*creep on all fours 네 발로 기다

He began creeping on all fours toward the buffalo.(18-6/41p) 

 

* have a feeling에  good/ bad 덧붙여 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 문장

* have a feeling  ~한 예감이 들다, ...한 느낌을 갖다

 

I have a feeling something bad is going to happen.(18-6/41p) 

He had a feeling Annie was right.(17-1/5p)  

I have a bad feeling about this. 

 

*stand six feet high 높이(키)가 6피트

A bison can weigh two thousand pounds and stand six feet high.(18-6/41p) 

 

몸무게 말할 때는 weigh는 익숙한데, 키에 stand 사용하는 건 새롭게 다가왔어요.

 

기존에 알고 있던 단어들의 다양한 의미를 매직낭독하며 확장해 나가고 있어요. tear 찢다, 눈물 등의 의미로 알고 있는 단어가 동사로 ‘화급히 움직이다’ tear가 전치사와 만나 다양하게 쓰이고 있어요. 

*tear 화급히 뛰어가다, 날뛰다, 내닫다

 

The dog tore down the hill.(18-6/44p)

 

Just as the giant wooden gates started to close, they tore through them.(14-9/59p)

 

Then, clutching the book, he tore out of the scroll room.(13-6/43p)

 

*swerve/ veer 방향을 바꾸다[틀다] 뜻이 비슷해요. 같이 기억해봐요. 

The buffalo swerved behind him.

 

He held on to Jack as Sunlight veered away from the buffalo and ran back up the slope.(13-6/44p)

 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 18권-7 White Buffalo Woman

• She just has a way with animals.
• On her face was a look of amazement.
• His eyes had grown wide.
• You wouldn’t believe what happened.
• Behind them, the buffalo grazed peacefully on the plains.

 

 

*have a way with 잘 다루다

She just has a way with animals.(18-7/46p)

 

+) You have a way with kids. 아이들 다루는 솜씨가 좋으시군요.

+) Do you have a way with words? 말솜씨가 있나요? 

 

*trail behind 느릿느릿 따라가다

Annie’s pony trailed behind.(18-7/46p) 

 Jack trailed behind her.(13-5/37p) 

 

I’ll trail behind you. 

지난번 아침마당에서 ㅇㅇ님이 이렇게 말씀하셨쥬~

그래서 더 기억에 남는 trail behind!

[줍줍매직문장] 18권-8 Sacred Circle

• Then he drifted off to sleep.
• Your pride led you to show up.
• Showing off made you behave foolishly.
• You have been gone a long time.
• "Let this be a lesson to you," Grandmother said sternly.
• A cool breeze sparks into the gray twilight.

 

 

*streak with (줄같이) 기다란 자국을 내다, 줄무늬를 넣다 

The deep blue sky was streaked with golden red light.(18-8/51p)  

The sky streaked with red and gold.(5-4/24p)

 

You have been gone a long time.(18-8/52p) 오래 있었구나.

 

*Let을 사용한 표현: ~하게 해 주다

Let this be a lesson to you.(18-8/52p) 

이번일은 너에게 교훈이 될거야

 

*show off 으스대다, ~을 자랑하다, 과시하다

Showing off made you behave foolishly.(18-8/52p) 

 

이 문장은 우리모두 마음에 새기면 좋을 말이에요.

주옥같은 문장이 많아요. 

 

*hang one's head 부끄러워 고개를 숙이다.

He hung his head.(18-8/52p)

 

hang 하면 ‘매달다’와 ‘전화끊다’만 생각하는 저, 부끄러워 고개가 숙여지네유^^ 

 

*lead to ~로 이어지다, ~을 초래하다[야기하다]

One thing always leads to another.    

Everything is related.(18-8/52p) 

One thing led to another.(10-8/59p)

 

오늘의 문장입니다. 모든 것은 다 연결되어 있다는 불변의 진리!

 

*welcome (다정하게) 맞이하다, 환영하다

We welcome you to our family.(18-8/53p) 

welcome하면 You’re welcome.의 형태로만 봐와서 익숙하지 않은 형태

 

welcome 목적어 to 형태 기억해 봅니다. 

 

*shadows spread 그림자가 점점 퍼지는 모습이 그려져요

The evening shadows spread over the camp.(18-8/53p) 

 

* sit with 한자리에 앉다, 동석하다

Come, sit with us. 

They sat with her near the warm fire.(18-8/53p)   

 sit down이 너무 익숙해서 sit with 새로움요. 

 

*snuggle (특히 어떤 사람에게) 바싹 파고들다, 달라붙다; (따뜻하고 안락한 곳에) 파묻다, 들이밀다) 

Teddy snuggled between them.(18-8/59p)  

 

*drift off  잠들다 = fall asleep 

잠에 취해 비몽사몽 정신없을 때

Then he drifted off to sleep.(18-8/59p)  

 

[줍줍매직문장] 18권-9 Lakota School

• Let your thoughts rise up as high as that feather.
• Then they started walking back the way they’d come.
• Teddy barked, as if to say Let's go!

 

 

잭이 일어나보니, 버팔로를 따라 캠프가 움직일 시간

 

*take down 내리다, 헐다

Everyone was taking down their tepees.(18-9/60p)

 

어제에 이어 오늘도 주옥같은 문장이 가득합니다.

Everything is related.(18-8/52p)

People cannot own land.(18-9/61p) 

The land belongs to the Great Spirit.(18-9/61p) 

‘땅을 소유한다’, 원래 우리 것이 아니었죠. 

 

요약정리 잘하는 잭~

Lakota school is everywhere.(18-19/62p) 

 

*rise 오르다, 올라가다/오르막

Let your thoughts rise as high as that feather.(18-9/63p)

At the top of the rise, they looked back.(18-9/64p)

 

새의 깃털처럼 높이 날아 생각을 크고 넓게 가져라. 보다 넓고 크게 생각하라.

깃털이 나름 의미있는 선물이였습니다.

 

전체적으로 생각도 하게 하고, 좋은 내용도 많았지만 이해하기 어려운 부분도 꽤 있었어요.

The Great Spirit, Good medicine… 아이들은 어떻게 이해했을까 궁금합니다. 

 

"Good medicine connects you to the world of the spirits." (18-19/63p)

The Great Spirit won't ever vanish.(18-9/66p)

 

*feel better 기분이 좋아지다

 Annie's words made him feel better.(18-9/66p)

 

* as if to say ~라고 하는 듯이

[줍줍매직문장] 18-10 Good Medicine

• As soon as we turned our backs, he slipped away.
• Birds left the branches and swooped up into the blue sky.
• All things are related.

 

I just had a thought.(18-10/69p)

I bet Teddy had something to do with White Buffalo Woman. 

Maybe Teddy has good medicine.(18-10/69p)

테디가 white buffalo woman이였던 걸까요? 

 

*give a look 쳐다보다, ~를 보다

give a wave/ give a smile/ give a hug/ give a kiss 등등의 형태, 여기저기서 많이 보시쥬~ 매직츄리에서도 진짜 많이 나왔습니다.

 

Teddy tilted his head and gave Jack a wise look.(18-10/69p)

The seal hunter gave them a wave.(12-9/58p)  

Morgan gave them a little wave.(12-10/66p)   

 

*slip away 인사도 없이 살짝 가버리다

As soon as we turned our backs, he slipped away.(1810/70p)

 

*no sign of  ~의 흔적[징조/기색]이 없는

There was no sign of him.(18-10/70p)  

 

*be sure of ...에 확신을 가지다, ...을 믿다

I'm sure of it.(18-10/71p)

 

미국의 역사가 아메리카 대륙을 차지하려는 과정에서 많은 아메리칸 인디언들과 버팔로들을 희생시켰다는 말이 마음을 무겁게 합니다. 그래도 버팔로를 다시 볼 수 있어 다행이에요.
