매직트리하우스 17권  Tonight on the Titanic  챕터 6-10까지 매직낭독 1기팀의 매직문장입니다. 매직낭독을 하면서 좀더 효율적인 영어 공부가 될 수 있도록 공동 영어공부 노트인 [줍줍매직문장] 프로젝트 입니다. 

 

Every cloud has a silver lining.

그림자가 있는 곳에는 반드시 밝은 빛이 있다.

아무리 안좋은 상황에서도 한가지 긍정적인 측면은 있다. 

 

[줍줍매직문장]은 매직트리하우스를 하루 한 챕터씩 소리 내어 읽었던 주요 문장들을 머리 속에서 구체화시키는 작업입니다. 좋은 문장을 소리 내어 읽음으로써 영어의 정확한 소리를 배워나가고, 영어식 사고와 영어 어순에 익숙해지는 효과가 있습니다.  영어문장 구조에 익숙해져야 영어문장도 잘 외워지고, 스피킹도 잘할 수 있습니다. 그런 이유로 정확하고 좋은 영어문장을 자꾸 소리내어 읽어서 익숙해지는 연습을 해 두면 좋습니다. 매일 하루 영어공부를 마무리하면서 한 번이라도 읽고 녹음하면 훨씬 더 효과가 있습니다.

[줍줍매직문장] 17권-6  Women and Children First

• This doesn't sound so bad, after all.
• It made a loud boom! Then it burst into many colored balls.
• The water was creeping up the stairs, step by step.
• Many wore life belts.
• Even if this ship does sink, it will take all night .
• there’s plenty of time for everyone on board to be rescued.
• Lucy’s smile faded.
• This is a trick, isn’t it?

 

예전에 전치사 to와 at 차이 말씀나눴던 것 기억나시죠. 

to가 일방적으로 가는 방향이라면,

at은 자극을 받고 반응을 보이는 관계를 나타냅니다. 

 

*yell at

*smile at

 

Annie yelled at the card players. 

The men smiled at her again. 

 

애니와 카드게임하는 아저씨들이 주거나 받거니 하는 모습이 그려지죠.

 

“Many ships are on their way right now,” another man said in a soothing voice. 

 

* in+a+형용사+voice  

in a low, angry voice

in a sad voice

in a small voice 

in a whispery voice

in a soothing voice

 

등등 형용사 붙여서 in+a+형용사+voice 형태로 계속 나왔죠. 한번 짚어 봅니다. 

 

*Even if this ship does sink, it will take all night.

*There’s plenty of time for everyone on board to be rescued.

*Many ships are on their way right now. 

*There’s nothing to worry about. 

 

아저씨들이 이렇게 말하니 루시도 괜찮다고 생각하는 것 같아요. 

*This doesn’t sound so bad, after all.

 

*troop과 up이 만나 의미가 더 강조되죠.

They came to the end and trooped up the grand staircase.(17-6/45p) 

 

as ~ as 구문을 이용해서 타이타닉호를 크리스마스 츄리에 비유하고 있어요. 크리스마스도 다가오는데 외워볼까요^^ 

*On the top deck, the Titanic was as bright as a Christmas tree.(17-6/45p) 

 

불꽃놀이 장면을 묘사했어요. 이렇게 영작은 정말 못할 듯 싶어요. 그래도 노력해보려고 많이 읽어봅니다^^

*With a hiss and rush of light, a rocket streaked into the sky.(17-6/45p) 

 

 저는 이 streak이란 단어를 보면 예전 2기 회원님께서 사진과 함께 올려주신 장면이 떠올라요. 하늘을 묘사할 때 주로 많이 쓰는 듯요. 

The sky was streaked with red and gold.(5-4/24p)

 

[매직문장] 17권-7  The Gift

• But there was nothing he could do as Annie disappeared from sight.
• I have a feeling that the two of you were our good luck tonight.
• The brightly lit Titanic seemed so solid and safe compared to the little lifeboat.
• Jack jumped away just in time.
• He hid his face against Lucy's coat.
• You have to be brave now, for your brother’s sake.
• I’d rather stay here.

 

*전치사 against의 쓰임 봐주세요.

He hid his face against Lucy's coat.(17-7/48p) 

 

*compared to ~와 비교하여 

비교급 구문없이 compared to로 표현

 

The brightly lit Titanic seemed so solid and safe compared to the little lifeboat.(17-7/49p)  

 

*risk가 크다할 때도 great이었는데, 

위험이 큰 것도 great

 

I’m afraid the risk is too great.(16-4/26p)

 You and William are in great danger.(17-7/49p) 

 

루시가 코트 주머니에서 줄이 달린 은시계를 꺼내는 장면을 묘사했어요. 장면을 떠올리며 연습하기 좋은 문장입니다. 

 

She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a silver watch on a chain.(17-7/50p) 

 

17권에서는 시간을 표현하는 문장들이 많이 나오고 있죠. 

 

The time on the watch was 1:50.

There were only thirty minutes left!(17-7/51p) 

 

시야에서 사라지다 disappear from sight 

시야에서 놓치다 lose sight of 

 

But there was nothing he could do as Annie disappeared from sight.(17-7/53p) 

 The ship slid past the iceberg until they lost sight of it.(17-1/18p) 

 

[매직문장] 17권-8 Every Man for Himself

• The lifeboat came even with the ship.
• Suddenly, the front of the ship dipped down into the sea.
• "Room for one more!"
• The men all stopped what they were doing and ran up the deck.
• Bring the boat back up for Lady Blackwell
• She nearly threw herself over the side of the ship.
• Slowly, the lifeboat was brought back up.
• They dodged sliding tables and chairs.
• It’s every man for himself.

 

*push one's way 밀치고 나아가다

 Jack pushed his way forward.(17-8/55p)   

잭의 다급함이 느껴지는 문장이에요.

 

*even 평평한, 짝수, ~조차

*<even+[전]+[명]> 

(…와) 같은 높이로, 평행해서 

 

The lifeboat came even with the ship.(17-8/55p) 

 +) The snow was even with my knees. 

 

*room for ~을 위한 공간

Room for one more!(17-8/55p) 

 

커피 주문시 우유나 크림 등을 넣을 수 있게 공간 남겨 달라고 할 때도 room을 씁니다. 

 Can you leave room for milk? 

Do you want room? 공간 좀 남겨둘까요? 

 

A band played lively music.(17-6/45p) 

 The band played a slow, calm song. 

 It sounded like a church hymn.(17-8/56p) 

 

타이타닉 명장면 중의 하나죠.  

연주자들이 끝까지 자신들이 맡은 일을 해내고 있는 모습, 정말 감동이었어요.

 People pushed and shouted, trying to get to a safer part of the ship.(17-8/56p) 

 

*dodge (몸을 재빨리 움직여) 피하다

[줍줍매직문장] 17권-9  Time Stops

• Jack had forgotten all about the little dog.
• The back of the Titanic was rising out of the ocean.
• They grabbed the railing and held on for their lives.
• Jack couldn’t see Annie at all.
• A giant wave of water rolled over a lower deck.

 

*for one’s life 필사적으로

Swim for your life!

Study for your life! 

구호처럼 자동으로 나오죠.

 

They grabbed the railing and held on for their lives.(17-9/59p)

 

예전 9권, 바다에서 상어 만났을 때 모습과 비슷하죠. 최악의 상황에서는 내려놓고, 그걸 받아들이는 잭의 모습이요. 잭이 얼마나 무섭고 두려웠을까요. 정말 위험한 상황이었어요. 

 

He closed his eyes, waiting to be washed away.(17-9/60p)

Jack shut his eyes and waited for the worst. (9-8/51p)

 

*forget all about ~를 모두 잊다

Jack had forgotten all about the little dog.(17-9/60p) 

 

*(공간적으로)가까이 있을 때 

by로 간결히 표현/ close발음 

He's close by.(17-9/62p) 

 

크리스마스 트리같던 타이타닉의 불이 모두 꺼지니 순식간에 세상은 칠흑같이 캄캄했을 거에요. 

On the top deck, the Titanic was as bright as a Christmas tree.(17-6/45p) 

Suddenly, the lights on the Titanic went out. 

The world was pitch-dark.(17-9/62p)  

 

매직트리하우스조차 옆으로 넘어져 있었어요. 

It was lying on its side.(17-9/63p)  

 

 

[매직문장] 17-10 A Touch of Magic

• He has a touch of magic.
• Staring at the starry sky, he shuddered at the memory of the sinking ship.
• How did you get out of my knapsack?
• He’s up to his magic tricks again.
• That was exactly how he felt.
• "I guess that's when time stopped for the Titanic," she said.

 

*심장이 뛸 때 beating, pounding

My heart's beating really fast.(17-10/65p)

 

touch의 새발견~ 

*a touch of 약간의, 소량의

 

He has a touch of magic.(17-10/66p)  

그는 매직기(기운)가 있어.

 

+) a touch of salt 약간의 소금

+) a touch of cold 감기 기운)

 

*up to one's tricks 

장난을 치고(치려고)

He's up to his magic tricks.(17-10/69p) 그는 장난을 치고 있어. 

 

잭이 애니의 손을 말없이 잡을 때… 

둘이 힘든 과정을 함께하며 형제애가 샘솟았을 듯요.

Without a word, Jack took her hand.(17-10/70p) 

 

*that's why 잘 사용하시죠? 

이번에는 that's when 기억해 봐요. 

 

I guess that's when time stopped for the Titanic.(17-10/67p) 

 

또 나왔습니다.

~한 예감이 들다, ...한 느낌을 갖다

 

He had a feeling Annie was right.(17-1/5p)

Rain dripped from the trees onto his poncho.(17-1/8p)

 

The rain had stopped. But water still dripped from the tree.(17-10/70p)  

비는 멈췄지만 여전히 나무에서 뚝뚝 떨어지는 빗방울 묘사

 

이미 타이타닉 스토리를 알고 있지만 다른 결말이기를 바라는 마음이 고스란히 전해집니다. 

 

Every time the story's told, we wish it had a different ending. (17-10/70p)  

 

*시간표현 정리*

시계바늘이 가리킬 때는 read

His clock read 5 A.M.(15-1/03p)

 

시계의 바늘은 hands
