8권-1 By Moonlight

*get dressed 옷을 입다 = put on,  wear

"Wake up. Get dressed."(8-1/3p) -”일어나, 옷입어.” 하고 바로 쓸 수 있는 표현 

 Let's get dressed.(2-1/5p)

 

*rub 비비다, 문지르다  

*rub one's eyes 눈을 문지르다, 눈을 비비다

He rubbed his eyes.(8-1/3p) 

-눈을 비빌 때 rub

 

*make ~이 되다, 되어주다

The moon makes it bright enough to see.(8-1/4p) 

 

*have a feeling  ...한 예감이 들다

I have a feeling that the full moon might help us.(8-1/4p) 

 

No time will have passed.(8-1/4p) 

No time at all had passed in Frog Creek.(5-10/64p)

No time had passed since they’d left.(1-10/61p) 

-모험 전후로 시간이 전혀 흐르지 않았음을 표현하는 문장이이에요. 

이렇게 시간이 잠시 멈춰있으면 얼마나 좋을까요. 

 

*so~ that~

The moon was so bright that he could see his shadow.(8-1/5p) 

쓰는 영어 so ~that 구문의 정확한 뜻

*stream (액체・기체가) 줄줄 흐르다(흘러나오다)

-When light streams into or out of a place, it shines strongly into or out of it.

-이제 너무 익숙한 단어 stream

거의 매 권마다 나오는 단어지요. 

 

◈shine(자동사) 빛나다, 비추다

+) shine-shined/shone-shined/shone

-He really shined then. 그때 되게 빛났었어.

 

-I shined the light from here. 여기서 빛을 쐈어요.

-The sun shone brightly in a cloudless sky.

  구름 한 점 없는 하늘에서 해가 밝게 빛났다.

 

 -He shone the flashlight around the cellar.

   그가 전등으로 지하실을 이리저리 비추었다.

 

◈shine(타동사) 광을 내다, 닦아서 윤이 나게 하다

+) shine-shined-shined

 

-Could I have my shoes shined? 구두 좀 닦아주시겠습니까? 

 

-He shined shoes and sold newspapers to make money.

  그는 돈을 벌기 위해 구두를 닦고 신문을 팔았다.

 

-I shined my shoes this morning.

   나는 오늘 아침 내 구두를 (직접) 닦았다.

 

▶정리

◈shine이 (자동사)로 쓰여  ‘빛나다, 비추다’의 의미면 

+) shine-shined/shone-shined/shone 

shined/shone 두 가지 형태의 과거동사와 과거분사 가능 

 

◈shine이 (타동사)로 쓰여 ‘광을 내다, 닦아서 윤이 나게 하다’이면 

+) shine-shined-shined

반짝반짝 광을 내는 '슈샤인보이'는 오직 shined만 가능

*rest on ~에 기초한

-말하는 시점(보통 현재)에서 과거 사실에 대한 후회나 유감을 나타냅니다. 

I knew we should have brought a flashlight.(8-1/7p)

+) I should’ve studied English harder.

+) I should’ve done this before.

-우리 이제 5년 후, 10년 후에는

영어공부 좀 했었어야 했는데 하고 후회하지 말아유~

 

*make out (글씨·형체·의미)를 알아보다, 알아듣다

He could make out diagrams and shadowy pictures.(8-1/7p) 

+) I couldn't make out the letters. 난 그 글자를 알아볼 수가 없었어.

+) He couldn't make out the words. 그는 그 말을 알아들을 수 없었다. 

+) It was so dark I couldn't make out anyone.

     너무 어두워서 사람들을 알아볼 수 없었어요.

+) He said something, but I couldn't make it out.

    그가 뭐라고 말했는데, 무슨 말인지 알아들을 수가 없었다. 

 

*squint 눈을 가늘게 뜨고[찡그리고]보다

He squinted to see - but the sorcerer  had vanished.(7-7/52p)  

Cap’n Bones’ good eye squinted at the writing.(4-5/29p)

 

*boil to death 삶아죽다

*freeze to death 얼어죽다

8권-2  Space Motel

*eyes widened 눈이 휘둥그레지다

*get + 형용사: (~한 상태가) 되다

*pound (가슴이) 쿵쿵 뛰다

-If your heart is pounding, it is beating with an unusually strong and fast rhythm, usually because you are afraid.

*with excitement 신이 나서, 흥분하여

 

 

 

Jack's heart pounded with excitement.(8-2/13p)

Jack's heart was pounding.(3-7/42p)

Jack's heart was pounding so hard he thought he might faint.(3-5/26p)

-가슴이 쿵쿵 뛰는데 신이 나서 쿵쿵 뛰면 얼마나 좋을까요? 

 

*hardly ‘거의 ~ 않다’

*can hardly (can, could와 본동사 사이에 쓰여)거의 ... 할 수가 없다[...하기가 무척 어렵다]

He could hardly speak.(8-2/13p) 말을 할 수가 없었다

 

hardly ‘거의 ~ 않다’로 알고 있쥬. 아는 단어임에도 불구하고 우리 입에서는 잘 안나와요.

부정의 의미인데 오히려 문장 형태에 변화를 주지않아서 사용하기 쉬워요.

오늘은 hardly 기본 활용하는 걸 배워서 일상생활에서 써보도록 해요. 

 

나 술 잘 안마셔. 술 거의 안마셔. 

I hardly drink.= I drink hardly. = I don’t like to drink.

 

don’t/ doesn’t/ didn’t...

인칭이나 시제 고민없이 문장에 hardly만 붙이면 되어 더 간단해요. 

사실 한국말에서도 ‘난 그거 절대 안해’ 보다 ‘잘 안해’/ ‘난 그거 거의 안해’ 라고 더 많이 쓰죠. 잘 익혀두면 유용하게 쓸 수 있어요. 

 

I hardly drink. 나 술 잘 안마셔.

I hardly have a meal. 밥 잘 안먹어.

I hardly take a nap. 낮잠 잘 안자. 

I hardly go there. 거기 잘 안가. 

I hardly watch movies. 영화 잘 안봐. 

I hardly listen to music. 음악 잘 안들어.

 

*run around in circles 우왕좌왕하다, (별 소득은 없이) 부산만 떨다 = running back and forth

-be busy doing something without achieving anything important or making progress 

The mouse was running around in circles.(8-2/14p)

-squeak, squeak!하며 우왕좌왕하는 게 피넛이 뭔가 하고 싶은 말이 있는 것 같아요. 

 

+) go round in circles (진전이 없이) 제자리걸음을 하다

+) talk in circles 혼란스럽게 빙 둘러서 말하다, 중언부언하다

 

*let out (울음, 신음 소리 등을) 내다

He let out a deep breath.(8-2/14p)

But just then the mammoth let out a cry.(7-8/54p) 

The dinosaur let out a sad tuba sound.(1-6/38p) 

-let out 꽤 익숙한 구문이죠. 앞으로도 계속해서 나와요.

 

*step aside 옆으로 비키다 

Annie stepped aside so he could look out the window, too.(8-2/17p)

Annie stepped aside so he could look, too.(8-5/39p) 

-잭이 볼 수 있게 애니가 살짝 옆으로 비켜준 표현

 

*take one’s breath away (너무 놀랍거나 아름다워) 숨이 멎을 정도이다

What he saw took his breath away.(8-2/17p)

+)It took my breath away. 나는 숨이 멎을 것만 같았답니다.

-탐 크루즈 영화 주제가 take my breath away도 있죠.

*ink-black 검은빛, 먹빛

+)pitch dark 칠흑같이 어두운, 완전히 깜깜한 

It was pitch dark.(3-9/51p)

-새까맣다는 ink-black으로, 

칠흑같이 어두운, 완전히 깜깜한 pitch dark 3권에서 나온 표현도 복습해 봅니다.

*read from (책신문 등에서 문구를) 여기저기 읽어주다, 큰 소리로 띄엄띄엄 골라서 읽다

Jack read from the book again.(8-3/19p) 

-항상 read'만 썼었는데

읽어주다할 때 표현은 read from

 

*bulky 부피가 큰, 덩치가 큰 large, heavy

Bulky white suits hung from hagers.(8-3/20p) 

 

*into place 제자리에

Annie locked Jack's air tank into place.(8-3/21p) 

-into place를 보니까

늘 안경을 고쳐쓰는 잭, push his glasses into place가 생각이 났어요.

 

*clumsily 어색하게, 서투르게 awkwardly 

*clumsy 어설픈, 서투른

Jack and Annie moved clumsily around the room.(8-3/23p) 

And his spacesuit was too clumsy.(8-4/29p) 

As they moved  clumsily into the spacesuit storeroom, Jack felt heavy again.(8-8/53p) 

 

*sling (느슨하게) 매다[걸다/달다

*sling over one's shoulder 어깨에 걸머지다

Then he slung the pack over his shoulder.(8-3/23p)

-baby sling 베이비 슬링 

저희 아이들 어릴 때 너무 잘 썼던 기억이 나요.

특히 둘째 슬링에 걸머지고, 큰아이 손 잡고 다니던 오래전 추억이 방울방울 떠오르네요.

*give a push ~을 밀다

-주로 트리하우스에서 땅으로 내려올 때 쓰는 표현이었지요.

이제껏 본 step~onto 문장 중 가장 잘 어울리는 문장 같아요.

Now he felt as light as a  feather.(8-4/27p)

-as~as 많이 눈에 띄네요. 5권 닌자편에서도 정말 많이 나왔었죠. 복습시간 가져 봅니다. 

Jack tried to be as still as the rock.

Soon he started feeling as strong as the rock. 

As safe as the rock.(5-8/49p) 

 

*wear 동사(목적어 없이 사용됨), 마모, 사용, 소모 또는 기타 원인으로 인해 점진적인 손상, 감소, 감소 등을 겪는다

*away (시간적·공간적으로) 떨어져[떨어진 곳에], 다른 데(로), 자리에 없는, 결석한 (=absent)

*wear away (계속 사용하거나 문질러서 반들반들하게) 차츰 닳다[닳게 만들다]

So footprints will never wear away naturally, not even in a billion years.(8-4/26p)

*land on one's feet 넘어지지 않고 서다

She landed on her feet.(8-4/27p)

 

*weigh 무게[체중]가 …이다

*weigh less (무게)가 더 적다[덜 나가다]

*weigh 60 pounds 60파운드 나가다 

*weigh 10 pounds 10파운드 나가다

A person weighs less on the moon because of the moon's low gravity and lack of air.(8-4/27p)

If you weigh 60 pounds on Earth, you would only weigh 10 pounds on the moon.(8-4/27p)

 

-weight는 워낙 자주 쓰는 명사라 익숙한데,

 weigh는 정말 활용해 본 적이 별로 없는 듯 해요.

*bound (특히 신이 나서) 껑충껑충 달리다

-to run or jump taking large steps when you are full of energy or excitement

She bounded past Jack - almost flying through the air.(8-4/26,27p)

He bounded up and down.(8-4/27p) 

Annie bounded into the crater.(8-4/30p)

 

*fall 넘어지다, 쓰러지다. 떨어지다, 빠지다, 내리다 

*fall over (걸려) 넘어지다, ~로 넘어지다

*lie on one's side 옆으로 드러눕다

We don't want to fall over in these suits.(8-3/24p) 

He fell right over and lay on his side.(8-4/29p)  

 

*전치사 against는 ’ ~에 반대하여, ~에 붙여, ~가까이’ 뜻으로 대항하는/ 마주하는 에너지가 있습니다. 

She pressed her boot against his and pulled him up.(8-4/29p)  

She pushed her feet against the side of the pit.(7-7/45p)

She kept pressing against the side of the pit.(7-7/45p)  

-발로 무언가를 밀 때 against와 잘 어울리죠. 

7권에서 구덩이에 빠졌을 때 발로 디디며 올라오던 표현에서도 against를 썼죠. 

 

*against 기본의미: ~에 반하여

-무엇에 접촉하여 '닿다'라는 뜻이 있음: ~에 닿는, 붙어서

-against는 대항하는/ 마주하는 에너지가 있습니다. 

-발로 무언가를 밀 때 against와 잘 어울리죠.

7권에서 구덩이에 빠졌을 때 발로 디디며 올라오던 표현에서도 against를 썼죠. 

She pressed her boot against his and pulled him up.(8-4/29p)

She pushed her feet against the side of the pit.(7-7/45p)

She kept pressing against the side of the pit.(7-7/45p)  

 

- against his glasses/ against the rock/ against the door/ against the wooden door/ against it/ against the wall

*brush 솔질[비질/칫솔질]을 하다

*off <무엇이 제거되었음을 나타냄>, 공간·시간상으로 멀리, 떨어져서 

*brush off 털다, 털리다, 무시하다 

He brushed it off.(8-4/30p) 

He brushed the rest of the muddy sand off the chest.(4-8/51p) 

-brush 털다에 off 가 붙어 싹싹 털어내는 느낌이 들어요. 

 

*bet (...이) 틀림없다[분명하다] (무엇에 대해 거의 확신함을 나타냄)

I bet I can drive this.(8-4/31p)

-애니의 대담함에 또 놀랍니다. 

 

*lurch 휘청거리다, 요동하다

The moon buggy lurched backward.(8-4/31p)

-원서를 읽다보면 자주 보게 되는 단어 중 하나,

‘ lurch 휘청거리다’ 함께 기억해 봅니다.

 

*step on …을 (짓)밟다 

Step on the brake!(8-4/31p) 브레이크 밟아!

 

*jerk 홱 움직이다, 홱 움직임, 갑자기 잡아당김

-jerk은 명사로도, 동사로도 쓰여요. 

 

*tilt 기울이다

*tilt back 뒤로 기울이다

8-5  Hang On!

*bumps and hollows 우둘투둘, 울툴불퉁 (튀어나오고 들어가고)

Annie drove the moon buggy over bumps and hollows.(8-5/33p) 

 

*buck 날뛰다, 갑자기 움직이다, 걷잡을 수 없이 흔들리다

*bronco 야생마

*bucked like a bronco 야생마처럼 난리치다

It bucked like a bronco.(8-5/33p)

-어렵지 않은 문장인데  

buck, bronco 익숙하지 않은 단어지요. 이번 기회에 익혀봅니다. 

애들이 좋아서 날뛸 때 이렇게 표현해보면 어떨까요? 

 

*hold on to ~을 계속잡고 있다, 꽉 움켜잡다

Jack held on to the dashboard.(8-5/33p)

He held on to Jack and laughed a mean, ugly laugh.(4-4/21p)  

-꽉 잡는 표현은 clutch나 grab,

hold on to는 오랜만에 등장한거 같아요.

 

+)hold on 기다려[멈춰], (곤경, 위험을) 견뎌[참아내다

 

*at least  최소한

*take a look (...을) (한 번) 보다, 점검하다

*take a good look at ~을 잘 살펴보다, ~에 대해 알아보다

But now, at least, he could take a good look at the moon.(8-5/35p)

 

*get a look (잠깐, 한번) 보다

*get a good look at ~을 잘 보다

He wanted to get a good look at everything first.(8-4/25p)

 

*barren[bærən] 척박한

-a barren place is dry and empty with few plants growing.

He had never been to such a colorless, barren place.(8-5/235p)

 

*오늘의 명언*

WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND.(8-5/36p) 

이걸 따라서 쓴 아이들 참 기발했어요.

We came in peace 

앞으로 아이들이 누군가 만날 때마다 계속해서 하는 말

 

"We come in peace"

달에서 본 문구가 오래도록 기억에 남나봐요.

 

*tear[ter]찢다, 샅샅이 뒤지다, 화급히 움직이다/ tear[tɪr] 눈물, 울음

*tear out ...을 잡아 벗기다[뜯다], (...에서) 급히 뛰어나가다

Jack tore out the piece of paper.(8-5/37p) 

He pulled out the book and started tearing through it.(2-7/43p) 

He grabbed it and tore through it, looking for the photograph of the Frog Creek woods.(1-9/60p) 

 

-tear 또 나왔어요. 앞으로도 은근 자주 나오는 단어에요.

tear[ter]  동사에 out,  through가 만나 느낌이 더 살아나요.

 

해적편 4권에서도 나왔었죠. 잠시 복습시간 가져봅니다.

+)tear yourself away (떠나고 싶지 않은 ~에서) 떠나다, (~으로부터) ~을 떼어 놓다 

But Jack couldn't tear himself away.(4-8/50p) 

-보물상자를 앞에 두고 발걸음이 떨어지지 않는 잭,

tear가 뭔가를 찢어내는 이미지니까 억지로 찢어내듯 발걸음을 떼어내는 걸로 볼까요. 

 

*feel dizzy 어지럽다

Thinking of “forever” made Jack feel dizzy.(8-5/38p) 

He felt a bit dizzy.(1-9/59p)  

 

+) feel faint 현기증이 나다, 기절할 것 같다

He felt faint.(6-8/47p)    

 

*clear one's thoughts 생각을 정리하다

He shook his head to clear his thoughts.(8-5/38p) 

-정말 머리를 흔들면 clear하게 생각이 정리될까요? 그렇다면 자주 흔들어 생각을 정리해 보고 싶어요. 

 

*run out of …을 다 써버리다, …이 없어지다[바닥내다], 동나다

+) run out of stock 품절되다

+) run out of patience 참을성이 바닥나다

+) run out of breath 숨이차다, 숨이 딸리다

*running out of time 시간이 다 되다

We might be running out of time.(8-5/38p)  

 

*step aside 옆으로 비키다

Annie stepped aside so he could look, too.(8-5/39p)
