"Her sickness came from the water,"

"If the water is dirty, you should boil it for a count of two hundred before she drinks it."(45p)

If her mother tried to boil such a small amount, the pot would be dry long before they could count to two hundred.(45p)

She would never be able to stop Akeer from doing the same.(46p)

He kept himself awake by counting the strokes of Uncle's paddle and trying to gauge how far the canoe traveled with every twenty strokes.(46p)

*as well 또한, 역시

"A와 B도 있습니다”라는 말을 할 때 보통 and를 사용해서 표현할 수 있지만, B 뒤에 as well를 붙이면 “A뿐 아니라 심지어 B까지 있어요”라는 의도를 살릴 수 있어요.

+) We have fruits and vegetables as well.

우리 가게에는 과일도 있고, 야채도 있어요.(과일가게에 야채도 있음을 강조)

The sugar-cane juice soothed the sharpest edge of Salva's hunger. He was able to eat the rest of meal slowly, making each bite last a long time.(47p)

There were no mangoes among the fishman's great stores, but sucking on his piece of sugar cane reminded Salva of those happier times.(49p)

Salva would take a mango from the spokes almost before his father had dismounted. His mother would peel it for him, its juice insides the same color as her headscarf. She would slice the flesh away from the big flat seed. There was always plenty of fruit that clung stubbornly to the seed. He would nibble and suck at it to get every last shred, making it last for hours.(48p)

As the sun touched tge horizon,

Only a few minutes later, mosquitoes rose up from the water, from the reeds, form everywhere.

Thousands, maybe millions, of hungey mosquitoes massed so thickly that in one breath Salva could have ended up with a mouthful if he wasn't careful.(49p)
