▶hope과  wish의 차이 살펴봅니다. 

◈hope: ~하면 좋겠다, ~하길바라(무언가를 바랄 때)

I hope you're having a great day.

I hope you enjoyed your lunch.

 

◈wish 주어+ 동사: ~할텐데, ~하면 좋을텐데, ~했을텐데

우리가 원하는 상황이지만 현재 상황과 반대되는 상황일때/ 아쉬움을 표현할 때

 

예문) I wish everyday was Sunday.

*wish를 쓴 이유

1) 매일매일은 일요일이 아니기 때문에

2) 일요일이 아니기에 아쉬움

 

I wish I could be a doctor. 

I wish you were here..

I wish I hadn't worked so hard. 

그렇게 일만하며 살지 않았더라면 좋았을텐데.

*cave in 무너지다, 침몰하다, 내려앉다  = collapse

-간단한 문장인데 영작하라면 쉽지 않죠. 외웁시다요!

*yowl[ jaʊl ] (비통하게) 울부짖다 

-If a person or animal yowls, they make a long loud cry, especially because they are sad or in pain.

-yowl (비통하게) 울부짖다 = wail 울부짖다, 흐느끼다 

 

*haunt[ hɔːnt ] 뇌리에서 떠나지 않다[계속 떠오르다], (어떤 장소에) 귀신(유령)이 나타나다

*haunting (아름답거나 슬프거나 무서워서) 잊을 수 없는[잊히지 않는]

-something that is haunting is so beautiful or sad that you remember it.

-할로윈에 a haunted house 생각이 나서 무서워서 잊혀지지 않나보다 했는데

슬프고 아름다워서 마음 속에 자주 떠오르는것이란 의미도 있어요. 

 

[매직문장] 7권-7 The Sorcerer's Gift

-stare와  through가 만나 마스크 눈구멍으로 보는 모습을 떠올려 봅니다.

 

*pull 끌다, 당기다, 끌어[잡아]당기다

*pull up 올리다, 당기다, 끌어올리다

*tug (세게, 흔히 여러 번) 잡아당기다,  (세게) 끌어당기다

*'끌다'의 뜻을 가진 영어단어 살펴봅니다.

▶pull: 일반적으로 '끌다'의 의미로 널리 쓰이는 단어

  상하 전후의 방향으로 다 쓰일 수 있음

ex) You push and I’ll pull.

 

▶draw: 부드럽게 한결같이 끌다

-to move sth/sb by pulling it or them gently

ex)Horses draw a wagon.

 

▶drag: 무거운것을 힘들여 끌다 

-to pull sb/sth along with effort and difficulty

ex) They dragged her from her bed.

 

▶tug: 힘을 들여 확 잡아 당기다

+)tugboat 예인선(다른 배를 항구를 끌어주는 작은 배)

ex) The baby was tugging her hair.

*as if 마치... 인것 처럼, 흡사...와도 같이

*socket (다른 부분이 들어갈 수 있도록) 푹 들어간 곳, 구멍

-가끔 무거운거 들 때 어깨 빠지는 느낌이 있었어요. 

잘 외워두었다가 써보면 좋겠지요.

-미라 편에서, socket은 눈알이 빠져 텅빈 눈구멍을 가리켰었죠. 

 

shaggy 섀아-기이 그림

자음 뒤에 있는 y는 항상 길게 ‘이이’로 빼 주세요.

발음공부하며 그린발음이라고 많이 들어보셨죠. 그린[iy] 발음은 생각보다 입술을 더 길게 옆으로 찢듯이 해야 소리가 제대로 나옵니다.

[이이]하면서 입술이 긴장을 해서 옆으로 길어지는 모양새에요. 연습하신 후에 아래 문장을 읽어보세요. 

The mammoth looked like a giant elephant with shaggy reddish hair and long, curved tusks.(7-7/47p) 

 

*along ...을 따라 (죽 한줄로)

*along one side 한쪽을 따라서

*the other (side) 다른 한쪽

-피리 묘사를 너무 잘하고 있어요. 저절로 피리 모습이 그려져요. 

 

*nestle 편안하게 자리잡다, 따뜻이 앉다, 자리잡다

He nestled behind Annie.(7-7/51p) 

-nestle란 단어는 네슬레 상표에서 봐서 익숙한 느낌이죠.

잭이 정말 기분 좋게 앉아 있는 모습이 떠올랐어요. 

 

*plod (특히 지쳐서) 터벅터벅 걷다

*plodding (특히 남이 볼 때 지겨울 정도로) 꾸준히 하는 slow and boring 

*pick up speed 속력을 높이다, 속도를 올리다[더 빨리 가다]

The mammoth took slow, plodding steps across the snow, then picked up speed.(7-7/51p) 

-천천히 터벅터벅 걷다가 속력을 내고 있어요. 

 

*bump 부딪치다, 찧다, 쿵, 탁(단단한 것에 부딪치는 소리)

*up and down 위아래로, 이리저리[왔다 갔다]

“Where are we going?” said Jack as they bumped up and down.(7-7/51p) 

Her hand bumped his.(5-10/68p) 

 

*part 나뉘다, 갈리지다, 헤어지다

*come out (해, 달) 나오다, 피다

But at that moment the clouds parted, and the sun came out.(7-7/52p) 

-구름이 열리고 해가 나오는 장면

 

Just then the clouds parted. A full moon was shining in the sky.(2-8/55p) 

-2권 캐슬북에서 달이 뜨는 장면에서도 the clouds parted

구름사이로 해나 달이 뜰 때 쓸 수 있는 표현, 기억해 봅니다. 

 

*blind 눈부시게 비추다, 눈이 먼

*be blinded by …로 눈이 부시다, …에 눈이 멀다[콩깍지가 씌다]

*squint 눈을 가늘게 뜨고[찡그리고] 보다

Jack was blinded by sunlight on the snow.(7-7/52p) 

-햇빛에 눈이 부셔 눈이 감길 때 be blinded by

햇빛에 눈이 반사되면 눈 부시죠~

 

+) Don’t be blinded by money. 황금보기를 돌같이 하라

+) When you're in love, you're blinded by love.

사랑에 빠지면 사랑에 눈이 멀어진다. 

 

[매직문장] 7권-8 The Grest Parade

• All the other animals bounded off.
• They were getting closer and closer to the grove of tall trees.

◈of와 off 발음 비교

a herd of/ the grove of...

bounded off/ fell off 

 

of와 off 자주 보는 단어임에도 생각보다 많이 틀리는 발음입니다.

*came into view 시야에 들어오다, 보이게 되다  become able to be seen

 이런 표현들이 익숙해져 봅시다요.

*prance (과장되게, 뽐내며) 활보하다

-to walk in an energetic way and with more movement than necessary

*in the distance 저 멀리(멀리 떨어져 있기는 하지만 모습이 보이거나 소리가 들릴 정도는 되는 거리를 나타냄)

She pointed to a herd of elk in the distance.(7-8/53p)

 The sun was setting in the distance.(5-10/64p)

In the distance, they could see their dad step out of their house.(5-10/65p)

 

+) In the distance, the sky was beginning to brighten.

멀리 하늘이 밝아오기 시작하고 있었다. 

+) You can feel her aura in the distance. 멀리서 봐도 아우라가 느껴져요. 

 

*at a distance 좀 떨어져서, 거리를 두고 

The elk, reindeer, rhino, and bison moved along with them, at a distance.(7-8/54p)

 

+) It looks better at a distance. 좀 떨어져서 보면 더 좋게 보인다. 

+) She had loved him at a distance for years. 그녀는 수 년동안 멀리서 그를 사랑해 오던 참이었다.

 

-그동안 익숙하게 봐왔던 in the distance에 

‘at a distance 좀 떨어져서, 거리를 두고’ 같이 익혀봅니다. 

전치사 하나에 따라 뜻이 달라집니다. 

 

*just then  바로 그 때 

*let out (울음소리·신음소리 등을) 내다

But just then the mammoth let out a cry.(7-8/54p)

-1권에서 구슬픈 tuba 소리를 내던 공룡 기억나실까요?

*plunge (앞아래로 갑자기) 거꾸러지다, 급락하다

The woolly mammoth roared and plunged forward.(7-8/55p) 

 

*nearly 거의

*fall off 떨어지다

Jack and Annie nearly fell off.(7-8/55p)

-nearly fell off. 다시 나왔어요.

평소 ‘거의’를 almost만 사용했다면 nearly도 익혀봐요.

-비슷한 표현 열대우림 6권에서도 나왔었죠. 잠시 복습 시간~

*hold to lips 입술에 대다

Jack held the mammoth-bone flute to his lips.(7-9/58p)

-위아래 입술에 대니까 복수형 lips로 쓰임

 

*out of (~이) 다 떨어진

*run out of …을 다 써버리다, 떨어지다, 동나다

*run out of breath 숨이 차다

Jack kept blowing until he ran out of breath.(7-9/59p)(숨이 찰때까지 불었다)

 

-무엇이 '다 떨어지다'는 영어에서 run out이라는 구동사를 사용해요. 그래서 '돈이 떨어졌다'는 My money ran out. 그런데 이것은 과거의 일을 뜻하고, 지금 무일푼인 경우에는 전치사 out of를 써서 I'm out of money.라고 해요. out of가 '~밖으로'라는 뜻을 갖고 있으므로 'out of money''돈 밖으로'라는 뜻인데, 사람이 돈 밖으로 나가 있다는 것은 돈이 다 떨어진 상태라는 얘기가 됩니다.

<현재> I'm out of money. 

 

+) We're out of sugar. 설탕이 다 떨어졌어요.

◈‘positive’란 단어에 집중해 봅니다. 

하나의 단어에 한 가지 뜻만 있으면 일대일 매칭되어 편하겠고만 왜이리 뜻이 많대요? 같이 살펴봅니다. 

 

여기에서는 ’확실한’의 의미로 쓰였어요.
