[매직문장] 17권-6 Women and Children First

*halfway up 중턱에, 절반쯤 올라간

계단에, 사다리에 절반쯤 올라간 표현인데, 이런 문장이 참 어려운거 같아요. 읽기는 쉬워도 입에서 나오는 건 또 다른 문제죠.
눈으로 한번 더 보고, 입으로도 중얼중얼 또 연습해 봅니다.
+) They camped halfway up the mountain. 그들은 산 중턱에 캠프를 쳤다.
+) The car conked out halfway up the hill. 언덕을 반쯤 올라가다가 차가 서 버렸다.
*creep 살금살금 움직이다, 아주 천천히 움직이다(전개되다)
*creep up (양, 가격 등이) 서서히 오르다, 기어오르다
*step by step 점차로, 착실히, 한 걸음 한 걸음

-creep하면 살금살금 움직이는 이미지를 가지고 있는데 물이 계단에 차오르는 것을 creep을 이용해 표현했어요. 전치사 up이랑 만나 생생한 느낌이 더 살아나요.
예전에 전치사 to와 at 차이 말씀나눴던 것 기억나시죠.
to가 일방적으로 가는 방향이라면,
at은 콕 집어서 어디, 누구 그리고 자극을 받고 반응을 보이는 관계를 나타냅니다.

troop과 up이 만나 의미가 더 강조되죠.

*as ~ as 구문을 이용해서 타이타닉호를 크리스마스 츄리에 비유하고 있어요.
On the top deck, the Titanic was as bright as a Christmas tree.(17-6/45p)
-불꽃놀이 장면을 묘사하고 있어요. 그런데 이렇게 영작은 정말 못할 듯 싶어요.
그래도 눈으로 익숙해지게 보고 또 보고, 입으로도 중얼중얼 노력해 봅니다.

- 저는 이 streak이란 단어를 보면 예전에 우리 2기 회원님께서 사진과 함께 올려주신 장면이 떠올라요. 이렇게 이미지랑 같이 보면 오래오래 기억에 더 남아요. 이어서 3기 회원님께서도 이미지를 공유해 주셨어요. 이 자리를 빌어서 다시 한번 더 감사드려요.
*burst 터지다, 터뜨리다, 불쑥 가다[오다/움직이다]

-burst 터지는 느낌에, into가 만나 안에서부터 막 터져나오는 이미지로 기억하면 좋을 듯 해요. 화도, 울음도 안에서부터 밖으로 터져나오고, 꽃도 안에서부터 피어나기 시작하니까요.
아이들 읽는 챕터북인데도 주옥같은 문장들이 너무 많아요. 기억하고 싶은 문장들 밑줄 쫙~ 함께 해 보아요.

*전치사 against의 쓰임 봐주세요. against는 ’ ~에 반대하여, ~에 붙여, ~가까이’ 뜻으로 대항하는/ 마주하는 에너지가 있습니다.

*compared to ~와 비교하여
비교급 구문없이 compared to로 간단히 표현하고 있어요.

*risk가 크다할 때도 great이었는데,
danger가 큰 것도 great

루시가 코트 주머니에서 줄이 달린 은시계를 꺼내는 장면을 묘사했어요. 장면을 떠올리며 연습하기 좋은 문장입니다.
괄호 안에 주어진 단어를 이용해 배열해 보는 연습도 해 보고, 한국말을 보고 영작도 해보세요.
