• Jack felt a rush of panic.

• Jack tried to imagine how terrible it would be to sit in a trench all day, waiting to be shot- or waiting to shoot someone else.
• The wagon jerked and swayed as it bumped over the dry ground. 
• Jack felt as though he were frying in the hot sunlight.
• A stream of water flowed downhill, running over rocks.

 

*jerk 홱 움직이다

*sway (전후좌우로)흔들리다

The wagon jerked and swayed as it bumped over the dry ground.(21-6/41p)

미드나 영화에서는 다른 의미로 더 많이 쓰이죠? 매직트리하우스에서는 동사로 ‘jerk 홱 움직이다’로 쓰여요. 그동안 꽤 많이 보셨쥬~ 

 

*grow[get] 비교급 : 점점 더 ~해지다

The boom of cannons grew louder and louder.(21-6/41p)

The sky was growing bluer as they watched.(18-2/11p)

 

*puff (훅 날아오는 공기·연기) (많은 양의 연기·김이) 뿜어져 나오다, 내뿜다

*puffs of smoke 확 나오는 연기

He saw bright flashes of light in the distance and puffs of smoke in the sky.(21-6/43p)

 

He/ saw/ bright flashes of light/ in the distance/ and /puffs of smoke/ in the sky.

본문장(주어+동사)에 의미를 확장시키는 세부사항을 통으로 많이 알고 있어야 영어로 좀 더 풍성한 대화를 할 수 있어요. 

 

*cut through the field ~사이로 길을 내다

Long ditches were also cut through the field.(21-6/44p)

-field를 cut through하니 길이 나겠쥬~ 

 

같은 사람들끼리 서로 총을 겨누고 있는 모습, 상상만으로도 끔찍하죠. 

*to be shot 총에 맞다/ shoot (총 등을) 쏘다

Jack tried to imagine -how terrible it would be- to sit in a trench all day, waiting to be shot-or waiting to shoot someone else.(21-6/44p)

 

*come to a halt 정지하다, 멈추다/ come to an end 끝나다

The wagon came to a halt.(21-6/45p)  

The firing came to an end.(21-7/46p) 

 

-come to가 ‘~에 다다르다, 이르다’의 뜻이니 halt  정지하는 것에 다다르고, end 끝나는 것에 다다르고. 똑같은 구조를 가지고 있지요. 지금껏 여러번 나왔고, 앞으로도 또 나와요.

Jack felt a rush of panic.(21-6/45p) 

잭은 공포를 확 느꼈다.

전쟁터에서 포탄이 날아다니자, 클라라 바튼이  Keep low!라고 해요. 몸을 웅크리고 앉아 있는데 급격하게 공포가 밀려온 거죠. 얼마나 무서웠을까요. 

 

*whiz 씽[휙]하고 움직이다[날다]

Another cannon shell whizzed overhead, then another.(21-6/45p) 

 

*whiz by 휙[쌩, 쓩] 지나가다

An arrow whizzed by.(14-7/41p)  

포탄과 화살이 휙휙 빨리 지나간다는 표현을 whiz로 했어요.

*keep alert 조심해라, 방심하지 마라

keep은 어떤 상태를 유지하고, 의도적으로 하는 느낌을 준다고 했죠. 방심하지 않는 것도, 고운 마음을 간직하는 것도 그 상태를 유지하려면 의도적으로 해야하니까 keep이라는 동사가 잘 어울려요. 우리가 매직낭독을 하는 것도 그냥 저절로 되는 게 아니라 의도적으로 노력해야 하는 것처럼요.  

*come off 떨어지다, 일어나다

*come off the battlefield 전장에서 물러나다

Look for the wounded as they come off the battlefield.(21-7/47p)

 

But most of the bandages had come off the face.(3-8/44p)

Plus the rotting bandages on her body were coming off.(3-8/44p)

3권 유령여왕 후테피 미라에서 come off 나왔던 것 기억하시려나요? 

 

Clara pulled the horses to a stop.(21-7/47p) 

이제 꽤 익숙해진 come <to a stop>과 같은 문장구조를 가졌지요.

다만  <to a stop> 앞에 (the horses)라는 목적어를 넣어도 되는구나 하고 배워봅니다.

*come across ~을 우연히 발견하다[마주치다]

They came across more ragged men resting in the shade of an oak tree. (21-7/48p)  

여기저기서 자주 볼 수 있는 come across, 우연히 마주치면 반갑게 맞아줍시다. 

 

*see if ~인지 살펴보다

See if any of those men need a ride to the hospital.(21-7/49p)  

 

*tear apart 생이별하다, 찢다, 분리하다

Many families and friendships have been torn apart by this war.(21-7/49p) 

-tear가 동사로 ‘찢다’의 의미가 있잖아요. 여기에 apart까지 더해져서 억지로 찢어놓는, 생이별하는 의미가 되나봐요. 

 

*강조하는 do 동사

The boy did look a like Jack.(21-7/50p) 

He does have heat stroke.(21-8/53p)  

 

*as if 마치 …인 것처럼, 흡사 …와도 같이

He tried to walk, but he swayed as if he were about to faint.(21-7/50p) 

The drummer boy moved as if he were walking in his sleep.(21-7/52p) 

The drummer boy was still asleep, but he was waving his arms as if he were having a nightmare.(21-8/56,57p)

◈비슷해서 헷갈리는 단어

*farther <물리적 거리> 더 멀리

-)far-farther-farthest  

 

*further <시간 정도 거리 수량> 더 멀리에, 더 나아가, 게다가

-)far-further-furthest

 

+) I can go no farther/further. 나는 더 이상 갈 수가 없다.

+) The issue needs further examination. 그 사안은 더 많은 검토가 필요하다.

→farther는  <물리적 거리>에만 사용되고, further가  <시간 정도 거리 수량>를 나타내어 더 많이 사용합니다. 알파벳 순서상 a보다 u가 더 뒤에, 멀리있쥬~ 더 멀리 더 많이 포함하고 있는 걸로 기억해 볼까요^^

 

*shuffle 발을 (질질) 끌며 걷다, (카드) 섞기

His feet shuffled in the dust.(21-7/52p) 

shuffle하면 카드 섞는 것만 생각나는데 발을 (질질) 끌며 걷는 걸 말한대요. 이렇게 또 하나 배워갑니다. 

 

*생활영어 문장 정리

We have no time to waste.(21-7/46p) 

Sometimes things are not as simple as they seem.(21-7/48p) 

Do you need a helping hand?(21-7/48p) 

Sometimes they even know each other.(21-7/49p)  

Does anyone need to go to the hospital?(21-7/49p)

[줍줍매직문장] 21권-8 Brothers

• In another time and place, they might have been friends.
• The shadows of twilight fell across the boy’s calm, sleeping face.
• We have to put our own feelings aside.
• Can you two stay in the back of the wagon and do as I tell you? 
• The two seemed far more alike  than different.

 

이번 챕터에서는 ‘~에 붙여, 대항하는/ 마주하는 느낌’의 전치사 <against>가 많이 보이죠.

얼굴에, 피부에, 머리목팔, 얼굴에 대고 있으니 <against>를 썼어요. 매직트리하우스하면 바로 전치사 공부죠. 

<against> 동그라미 치시고, 익숙해지도록 많이 보고 읽어봐 주세요. 

 

Gently press these cloths <against> their faces to help cool them off.(21-8/54p)  

A nurse will give you ice packs to press <against> his skin.(21-8/55p)  

He pressed the ice pack <against> the boy’s head and neck and arms.(21-8/55p)  

Jack felt so hot he pressed an ice pack <against> his own face for a moment.(21-8/56p)  

 

*기본동사 put

The Confederate soldier was put on a stretcher and carried to a tent.(21-8/54p) 

Two soldiers wearing bandages put the drummer boy on a stretcher.(21-8/55p)  

John was put on a cot.(21-8/55p) 

Put aside your own feelings, he remembered.(21-8/57p) 

But we have to put our own feelings aside.(21-8/59p) 

*heat stroke 열사병

*have a fever 열이 있다

 

*cool somebody off[down] ~를 시원하게 하다, ~를 진정시키다

*bring down a fever 열을 식히다, 열을 내리다, 해열

*go down (열이) 내리다

 

Gently press these cloths against their faces to help cool them off.(21-8/54p)  

Annie fanned the air to cool John off and to keep away the flies.(21-8/55p)  

Try to bring down his fever.(21-8/55p)  

His fever's gone down.(21-8/60p)  

 

열을 식히고, 열을 내리려 노력하고, 열이 절로 떨어지고하는 다양한 표현들… 

열을 식히고, 내리려고 노력할 때는 cool off, bring down a fever, 

열이 내렸을 때는 go down,

여러번 읽으며 문장 안에서 쓰임 봐주세요. 

 

*look up 올려다보다[쳐다보다]

*look back 뒤돌아보다

(*look down 내려다보다)

When he reached the entrance of the tent, he turned and looked back.(21-8/60,61p)  

 

*look at …을 보다, 살피다

Jack looked at the young men lying side by side.(21-8/54p)  

She looked at John.(21-8/59p) 

-at 콕 짚어서 누구, 어디

 

*give order 명령하다

The drumbeat was used to give orders to soldiers.(21-8/56p)  

군인들에게(to soldiers) order를 give하니까 ‘명령하다’

 

*be afraid for ~을 걱정하다

I'm afraid for him.(21-8/58p)

Jack was afraid for the boy.(21-8/61p) 

 

cf)be afraid of 겁내다, ~을 두려워하다, 무서워하다

+) It’s all over. There’s nothing to be afraid of now. 

모두 끝났어, 이제 두려워할 건 아무것도 없어.

+) Don’t be afraid of the star. Cheer up!  시작을 두려워하지 말고, 화이팅! 

 

*look like …인 것 처럼 보이다

*hoarsely 목이 쉬도록, 귀에 거슬리게(horse와 같은 발음)

*입가에 미소…

입술이 위아래로 있어서 lips 복수형을 썼어요.

 

*feel one's forehead ~의 이마를 만지다 

Annie felt his forehead.(21-8/60p) 

이마를 만져 열이 있나없나 느껴볼 때는 동사 feel 사용

 

*hardly 거의 ~하지 않다

Jack hardly knew the drummer boy.(21-8/61p) 

이제 익숙한 단어, hardly

문장에서 위치 확인해 봅니다.  

 

*with a heavy heart 무거운 마음으로, 슬픈 마음을 지니고

*step out/ step in(side) 밖으로 나오다, 안으로 들어가다; 간단 표현

With a heavy heart, Jack stepped out into the warm evening air.(21-8/61p) 

With a heavy heart, he followed.(20-10/70p) 

He stepped inside.(15-4/28p)

*take a life 목숨을 빼앗다, 목숨을 잃다

Everytime you see a flash, you know a shell may have taken a life or many lives.(21-9/62p) 

기본동사 take은 뭔가 가져가는 그림이죠. 목숨을 가져간거니까 목숨을 잃은 것. 

The car accident took her life. = She lost her life in the car accident.

전쟁의 참혹함을 실제로 겪고나니 애니마저도 명랑함을 잃게 됩니다. 

It makes me miss my mom and dad.(21-9/63p) 

Annie sounded tired and homesick.(21-9/63p) 

Finally, she had lost her cheerfulness.(21-9/63p)  

 

*sound ~하게 들리다

• As Jack hurried up to his room, some words from the Civil War song ran through his mind.
• They ran to their porch and dashed into their dry, cozy house.

 

*against ~에 붙여, 대항하는/ 마주하는 느낌

Raindrops tapped against the tree house.(21-10/70p)  

트리하우스에 빗방울이 떨어질 때 전치사 against가 어울리겠죠. 

 

*live 실천하다, 실행하다

We had to live it first.(21-10/70p)     

But you know what’s weird about getting that list?

I think we couldn’t just have taken it home when we first got it.

저 리스트 얻는데 있어서, 이상한게 뭐였는지 알아? 

우리가 처음 그걸 얻었을 때 이걸 집으로 가지고 갈 수 없었을 것 같아.

우리는 먼저 그것을 (something to follow) 실천[실행]해봐야 했어. 

즉 실행했기에 그 리스트의 효과가 있었던 거죠. 챕터 3에서 찾아야 할 것을 찾았지만 바로 집에 올 수 없을 거에요. 

 

매트하의 매력은 역시 전치사 공부죠. 전치사 on/ in의 쓰임 봐주세요.

- 동사 go 와 come은 관용적으로 and이나 to을 보통 안 붙이고 쓰기도 해요. 관용적인 표현에 예외도 많고… 영어가 만만치않아요. 같이 하나씩 배워나가 봅시다요.
