[줍줍매직문장] 20권-6 Hand to Hand

• Despite the glowing painting, the rock felt smooth and cool.
• The glowing line grew until it looked like a giant snake.
• She held out her free hand to Jack.
• It almost seemed to breathe.
• Let’s hold hands.
• Suddenly, Jack felt something thump against his leg.
• Then glowing handprints appeared below the snake.

 

*hold (손팔 등으로) 잡다[쥐다]

Let’s hold hands.(20-6/41p)

 

*hold out (손 등을) 내밀다

She held out her free hand to Jack.(20-6/41p)

The knight held out his gloved hand.(2-9/56p)  

 

손을 잡을 때는 hold

손을 내밀때는 hold out

이제 너무 익숙한 hold out, 매 권마다 나오는 구문이죠. 한번 짚어봅니다. 

 

*lead someone's on 이끌다, 인솔하다, 이어지다

Teddy kept barking, leading them on.(20-6/42p)

 

어두컴컴한 동굴에서 조그만 강아지 테디가 앞장서 이끌고 가고 잭과 애니가 따라가는 모습을 상상하니 귀여워요. 

 

*let out (울음소리, 신음소리등을) 내다

Teddy let out a howl.(20-6/43p)

 

이제 눈 감고도 찾을 수 있는 구문, let out 지금까지 정말 많이 나왔었죠. 앞으로도 또 나와요~ 

 

어두운 동굴에서 잭과 애니가 서로 손을 잡았다 놨다, 벽에 손을 댔다 떼었다 하는 표현을 다양하게 하고 있어요. 

*put one’s hand out 손을 내밀다

*touch (손 등을)대다, 만지다

Then he put his other hand out and touched the wall.(20-6/42p) 

 

*squeeze one's hand 남의 손을 꽉 쥐다

Jack felt Annie squeeze his hand.(20-6/43p) 

 

*let go of ~을 놓다

*put one’s hand 손을 대보다

She let go of Jack and put her hand inside one of the painted handprints.(20-6/44p) 

 

*take hand off 손을 떼다[놓다]

Jack quickly took his hand off the wall.(20-6/44p) 

 

*grab one’s hand ~의 손을 잡다

*thump 쿵하고 치다[두드리다], 쿵[탁]하는 소리

*thump against ~에 부딪치다

Suddenly, Jack felt something thump against his leg.(20-6/42p) 

thump이라는 동사와  against가 만나 어딘가에 부딪힌 느낌이 살아나요.

 

[줍줍매직문장] 20권-7 Rain, Rain, Rain

• Pretend the fire was all a dream.
• The sound was very faint at first.
• The heavy rain was putting out the wildfire.
• Jack grew sadder and sadder.
• We’ll stay right here till your mom comes back for you.

 

*fall on ~에 떨어지다

Rain fell on Jack's head and on Joey's head. 

Rain fell on Annie's head and on Teddy's head and on the koala’s head.(20-7/47p)

 

위기의 순간에 마침 비가 내려주어 얼마나 다행인지 애니는 It wasn't just luck. 그냥 운이 좋았던 것만은 아니라고 해요.

Somehow they brought the storm.(20-7/49p) 

*somehow 왜 그런지(모르겠지만), 왠지, 아뭏튼, 어떻게든

왜 그런지 모르겠지만 입에서 은근 나오기 힘든  ‘somehow’

 

목 말랐던 아이들에게도 단비였어요. 지금껏 마셔본 물 중 최고로 맛있었다고 해요.

*put out (불을) 끄다

꿈이었다고 생각해라고 말하는 애니도 예쁘고, 아무일없듯 다시 잠든 코알라도 무척이나 귀여워요. 힘든 일이 있을 때면 그 순간이 꿈이었으면 좋겠다 싶을 때가 있어요. 나 스스로에게도 다른이들에게도 해줄 수 있는 예쁜 말이에요.

The rain turned to a drizzle.

산불이 꺼져서 다행인데 이제 어미 캥거루가 걱정되기 시작해요. 혹시 혹시…

Maybe the mother kangaroo had come and left. 

Or maybe she had been caught by the dingoes. 

Or maybe she had been killed by the wildfire. 

Jack was afraid to look at Annie, afraid to say anything.(20-7/51p)  

 

그런 잭의 마음을 읽은 애니가 I know what you're thinking. 오빠가 무슨 생각하는지 안다고 해요. 그리고는 Let's wait a little longer. 여유를 가지고 조금만 더 기다려 보는 아이들의 모습까지 이번 챕터는 예쁜 표현들이 참 많아요.

[줍줍매직문장] 20권-8 The Rainbow Serpent

• That explains everything!
• A rainbow curved across the blue Australian sky.
• They all were still for a moment, as if they all were holding their breath.
• 4. She's saying thank you to us.
• It was like a special ceremony.
• The kangaroo held the piece of bark out to Jack and Annie.
• The kangaroo then sprang into the air.

 

다행히 산불도 꺼지고 어미 캥커루도 찾아오고 동굴의 비밀도 알게 됩니다. 이제 남은 건 테디의 비밀~ 

 

*거리를 나타낼 때- ten feet away /a few feet away

 She landed ten feet away from Jack, Annie, Teddy, and Joey.(2-8/53p)-ten feet away

A man carrying a tray of pies was standing a few feet away.(2-4/28p)-a few feet away

Jack and Annie saw him just a few feet away.(2-8/55p)-a few feet away

 

*clap with relief 안도의 박수를 치다

They laughed and clapped with relief.(20-8/54p)  

 

*give a nod 고개를 끄덕이다

The kangaroo gave a little nod.(20-8/55p)   

 

give a chance/ give a look/ give a wave/ give a smile/ give a hug/ give a kiss 등등의 형태에 give a nod 하나 더 추가요~  

 

*bark 나무껍질/ <개가> 짖다

Then she bent over and used a front paw to pick up a small piece of bark from the wet grass.(20-8/55p)  

The kangaroo held the piece of bark out to Jack and Annie.(20-8/55p)   

Teddy barked softly.(20-7/52p)   

bark이라는 단어가 명사나 동사로 쓰임에 따라 완전 다른 뜻이 되죠. 

 

*Dreamtime  꿈의 시대, 지복시대

Their myths take place in a time they call "Dreamtime."(20-8/57p)  

In Dreamtime, there is a Rainbow Serpent, who sends life-giving rain.(20-8/57p)

잭과 애니 덕분에 호주 원주민 신화도 배우게 되네요.

책을 읽어보니 궁금했던 게 다 설명되네요. 역시 독서는 진리! 

일곱색깔 고운 무지개가 파란 호주 하늘에 가로질러 걸려있는 모습을 상상해 봅니다.

 

*a touch of 약간의, 소량의

+) a touch of cold 감기 기운

 

*a touch of magic 마법의 기운

테디에게 마법의 기운이 있다는 말을 17권 타이타닉호에서 했었어요. 완전 똑같은 말을 여기서도 하는 애니, 대체 조그만 강아지 테디에게 무슨 비밀이 있는 걸까요? 고개를 갸우뚱하며 웃는 듯,  꼼지락꼼지락 움직이는 귀여운 테디. 

 

*tilt one's head 고개를 갸우뚱하다

*wiggle [꼼지락꼼지락/꿈틀꿈틀] 움직이다

Teddy tilted his head and seemed to smile.(20-8/59p)   

Teddy wiggled out of the pack.(20-8/60p)   

 

[줍줍매직문장] 20권-9 What Boy?

• Sometimes the boy was afraid to stand up for himself.
• This watch teaches him that time is very precious. It must be used wisely.
• This flower teaches him that nature holds many wonders.
• This painting teaches him there is mystery, magic, and wisdom in the traditions of ancient peoples.

 

*in a long time 한동안 for a long time

They hadn’t seen Morgan in a long time.(20-9/61p)  

+) I haven't seen you in a long time. 오랜만입니다.

 

총 4개 선물이 모아져서 테디의 마법이 풀렸어요. 매직을 배우고 있던 소년이 스스로에게 마법을 걸어서 강아지가 되었다고 하네요. 4개의 선물의 의미를 모건이 알려주고 강아지는 소년이 되어 떠납니다. 

 

네 가지 선물이 각각의 의미와 교훈이 있어요. 우리 모두에게도 필요한 교훈이 아닐까 싶어요. 특히나 나이들수록 느끼는 시간의 소중함, 정말 절실하게 느껴져요. 여튼 매직작가님 대단하십니다. 

 

1. This watch teaches him that time is very precious.(20-9/63p)  

2. The eagle's feather teaches him that a small creature can be one of the bravest.(20-9/63p)

4번째 선물에서 얻은 교훈, This painting teaches him there is mystery, magic, and wisdom in the traditions of ancient peoples.(20-9/64p)   

 

-there is 다음의 단어가 mystery, magic, wisdom으로 추상명사들이에요. 추상명사는 단수취급하고, 여러개가 나열되어도 단수취급해요. 추상명사는 셀 수 없는  불가산명사입니다. 이런 용어가 나오면 괜히 어렵게 느껴져요. 하나씩 살펴봅니다. 

 

◈가산명사

1.셀 수 있는 명사

2. 단수일 때는 앞에 부정관사 a, an을 붙임

3. 앞에 아무 것도 없을 때는 복수형 사용

4. 셀 수 없는 명사로 보이지만 가산명사로 분류되는 명사가 존재함

ex) approach, reservation…

 

가산명사가 여러 개 존재할 때는 명사 앞에  many나 a lot of를 넣고, 복수표시로 s를 붙입니다. 

-a banana 

-many bananas/ a lot of bananas

+) How many bananas are there on the table? 테이블 위에 바나나 몇 개가 있나요? 

+) Each year, they had too many bananas. 매년, 그들은 너무 많은 바나나를 거두었다. 

 

◈불가산명사

1. 셀 수 없는 명사

2. 단수, 복수 개념없고, 부정관사(a, an)가 안붙음

3. 셀 수 있는 것처럼 보이는 명사들이 포함되어 있어 어려움

 

sugar, paper, bread…

불가산 명사가 여러 개 존재할 때는 명사 앞에 much나 a lot of를 넣고, 셀수 없기 때문에 복수형을 뜻하는 s가 붙지 않아요. 그래서 sugar는 그냥 sugar입니다. 

-sugar 

-much sugar/  a lot of sugar
+) This cake has too much sugar in it. 이 케익에는 설탕이 너무 들어갔다. 

+) How much sugar do you need? 설탕은 어느 정도 넣을까?

 

*thank you for ~해줘서 고맙다, ~에 대해 감사하다 

Thank you for helping this boy learn his lessons.(20-9/64,5p) 

Thank you for breaking the spell.(20-9/65p) 

 

*in a flutter 두근두근[설레여]하여, 조마조마하게 하여, 당황하여

*In a flutter of time 잠깐사이 혹은 눈 깜짝할 사이

in a flutter time = very quickly = instant

In a flutter of time...(20-9/65p) 

 

*no longer 이미... 아니다, 더 이상 ...아닌[하지 않는] 

He was no longer a dog.(20-9/65p) 

He was a boy. 

강아지 테디에서 소년 테드로 변신...

 

[줍줍매직문장] 20-10 Dreamtime

• He looked a bit older than Jack, about ten or so.
• Annie broke their silence as they headed for their house.
• That was exactly what it was like.
• He had a friendly freckled face and twinkly dark eyes.

 

*on the ground on his hands and knees 무릎을 꿇고 손으로 바닥을 짚고 있는

The boy was on the ground on his hands and knees.(20-10/67p) 

 

His hair was the same color that Teddy’s fur had been.(20-10/67p)   

테디가 강아지로 변하면서 본래 머리카락과 같은 털 색깔로 변했다는 부분이 재미있어요. 

 

*a bit older 좀더 나이든, 약간 나이많은

*or so ...쯤[가략/ 정도]

He looked a bit older than Jack, about ten or so.(20-10/67p)   

+) I'm probably a bit older than you. 아마 내가 너보다 약간 나이가 많을 걸.

+) He does look a bit older. 그가 좀 노안이긴 하지.

-외워두면 잘 쓸 수 있는 문장, 외웁시다. 

 

*sheepishly 멋쩍게, 순하게, 소심하게

The boy grinned sheepishly.(20-10/68p)  

I accidentally changed myself into a dog.(20-10/68p) 

테드가 실수로 강아지로 변했으니 멋쩍을 만하죠. 근데 왜 잭과 애니가 힘들게 마법을 풀어야 할까요? 그런 덕분에 호주여행을 했습니다. 

 

*전치사 +감정추상명사 

- in shock/ in fear/ in awe/ in horror/ in wonder…

He was still in shock.(20-10/69p) 

The guards gasped in fear.(2-6/39p)  

He held his breath as he stared in awe.(2-4/26p) 

 

*find one’s voice (놀란 다음에) 말을 할 수 있게 되다

cf)lose one’s voice 소리가 안 나오다, 말을 하지 못하다

“You-you helped us a lot, Ted,” said Jack, finally finding his voice.(20-9/69p)   

 

I know we will meet again someday.(20-10/70p) 

다시 테디를 만날 수 있을까요? somehow, 아련한 듯 들려옵니다. 만날 수 있을지 모르지만 그렇게 믿고 싶은 마음을 담은 게 아닌가 싶어요. 마법을 쓰면 언제든 만날 수 있겠쥬~ 

 

*with a heavy heart 슬픈 마음을 지니고

With a heavy heart, he followed.(20-10/70p) 

 

*come to ~에 다다르다, ~에 이르다

silvery pink sky 은빛분홍색 하늘, 파스텔톤 하늘, 상상만으로도 예쁜 하늘이에요.

 

*search for the right words 적당한[알맞은] 말을 찾다

He searched for the right words.(20-10/72p) 

That was exactly what it was like.(20-10/72p)  딱 맞는 표현이었다.

 

평상시에도 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 문장들 정리해 봅니다.
