[매직문장] 14권-1 The Bamboo Book

• I wonder if the weather will be this nice in China.
• If only she knew we aren't pretending.
• They slipped between the tall trees until they came to a huge oak.
• What are we in for today?

 

*be in for (구어) (험한 날씨, 달갑잖은 일 등에) 말려들것 같다, ~을 꼭 겪어야만하다

What are we in for today?(14-1/2p)  오늘 우리는 어떤 일을 맞게 될까?

 

Just wish us luck.(14-1/2p) 

Just wish me luck.

중요한 일 앞두고 있을 때 쓰고 싶은 표현, 일상생활하면서 유용할 듯 해요. 외웁시다.

 

*this (부사) 이렇게, 이 정도로 

I wonder if the weather will be this nice in china.(14-1/3p) 

+) I love you this much. 이만큼 사랑해.

+) I'm sorry for calling you this late. 이렇게 늦게 전화 드려 죄송해요.

+) I didn't know it would be this big of a deal. 이렇게나 일이 커질 줄 몰랐어요. 

 

-this가 (명사) '이것'으로는 쓰기 쉬운데 부사로 쓰기는 은근 어려워요. 

-this가 (부사) '이렇게, 이 정도로' 쓰이는 것도 꼭 기억해 봅니다. 

 

*instead of/ instead  ~ 대신에

He was starting to feel excited now 'instead of scared'.(14-1/3p) 

It looked like a ruler, except it had strange writing on it 'instead of numbers'.(14-1/5p) 

They no longer wore jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers. Instead, they had on baggy pants ~.(14-1/8p) 

 

*최상급의 변형 표현

It was one of 'the world's most important discoveries'.(14-1/5p) 

The making of silk is 'China's most valuable secret'.(14-1/19p)

-the world's = in the world 

-the (world's) most important discoveries = the most important discoveries (in the world)

 

잭: Remember, Morgan said this would be a very scary adventure.

애니: They're always scary. 

But we always meet animals who help us, or people. 

I bet we meet someone great today.

He was starting to feel excited now instead of scared.

 

천방지축 애니가 오빠를 이렇게 다독여주고, 이 말 한마디로 잭은 안심하게 됩니다. 말의 힘을 다시금 실감하게 되는 장면이었어요. 

 

[매직문장] 14권-2 The Cowherd

• Now we know one thing for sure.
• This place is not as peaceful as it seems.
• A look of horror crossed the man’s kind face.
• Can you do me a great favor?
• Inside were his research book.

 

*have on 입고 있다

They had on baggy pants.(14-2/8p)

Instead, he had on a white tunic with a belt, sandals that laced up, and a leather bag.(13-2/9p)

   

*beyond 저편에

-If something is beyond a place or barrier, it is on the other side of it. 

Beyond the house was a walled city.(14-2/9p)  

 

*be sure 확신하다

"You can never be sure."(14-2/9p) 

 

He chose the dragon to be his symbol.(14-2/10p)  

as가 아니라 to be로 쓰임 눈여겨 봐주세요.

 

*go off 폭발하다 erupt

Pompeii looked peaceful before the volcano went off.(14-2/9p) 

 

*flowing (의복 등이 ) 미끈하게 처진

flowing 그냥 흐르는 느낌이겠지 했는데, 미끈하게 처진의 의미로 옷 묘사에 많이 쓰이는 단어래요. 특히 실크묘사할 때 많이 쓰이겠죠. 

It showed a man wearing a rich, flowing robe with wide sleeves.(14-2/10p)  

 

*tend ~을 돌보다, 보살피다, (가축, 기계) 지키다, 망보다, 재배하다

The man tending the cows was shouting and waving.(14-2/12p) 

tend to ~ 경향이 있다는 뜻으로만 알고 있었는데 ‘돌보다’의 뜻으로 쓰였어요. 

 

*오늘의 문장

"Can you do me a (great) favor?" 

"I would be (most) grateful."(14-2/13p) 

 

*a look of horror 무서운 기색 

*cross one's face (생각, 표정 등이) 얼굴에 스치다

A look of horror crossed the man's kind face.(14-2/13p) 

 

*cross 스치다, 교차하다[엇갈리다]

-If an ｅxpression crosses someone's face, it appears briefly on their face.

-if an ｅxpression crosses someone's face or lips, it appears there for a short time.

+) A look of annoyance crossed her face. 그녀의 얼굴에 짜증스런 표정이 스쳤다.

+) A little smile crossed her lips. 그녀의 입가에 엷은 미소가 스쳤다.

 

*for sure 확실히, 틀림없이, 의심할 여지없이

"Now we know one thing for sure."(14-2/14p) 한가지는 확실하구만~

 

-for sure는 sure보다 더 확실함을 풍깁니다.

비슷한 표현으로는 Certainly, Definitely가 있고요.

실제 회화에서는 for sure가 더 많이 쓰입니다. 

 

오프라 윈프리(Oprah Winfrey)가 14년간 O매거진에 연재한 칼럼들을 모아 엮은  “What I know for sure”라는 책이 있어요. 한국말 번역으로는 “내가 확실히 아는 것들” 이고요. 에세이 형식이라 소설보다 단어도 어렵지 않고 쉽게 읽힌다고 해요. 다음에 츄라이~ 해 보아요. 

 

Can you do me a favor? → For sure, go ahead! 

부탁 하나 해도 될까? → 당연하지, 말해봐! 

Do you know for sure? 확실히 알고 있니?

I can't say for sure. 꼭 된다는 보장은 할 수 없어. 

When will I know for sure? 언제쯤 확실히 알 수 있을까요?

It’s going to rain tomorrow for sure. 내일은 확실히 비가 올거야. 

I know for sure why he is mad. 난 그가 왜 화났는지 확실히 알아. 

I saw him and knew for sure that he had come to see me.

나는 그를 보고 그가 나를 보러 왔다는 것을 확실히 알았다.

Even to this day, we don't know what happened for sure.

오늘날까지도, 우리는 무슨 일이 일어났는지 확실히 모릅니다.

 

*We are going to read the Magic Tree House book every day for sure.

 

[매직문장] 14권-3 The Silk Weaver

• Good luck on your date!
• The Dragon King will have him put to death.
• And remember to keep your head down so no one will notice us.
• Let's do that on our way back.
• You have been seen.

계속해서 나오는 목초지란 뜻의 단어입니다. 

pasture/ prairie / meadow

 

*give a message 메시지를 전하다

*give a smile …에게 미소짓다

We have to find the silk weaver and give her the message.(14-3/15p)   

The silk weaver gave Annie a shy smile.(14-3/17p)   

give a wave/ give a look/ give a hug/ give a kiss 등등 영어식 표현이 자주 등장해요. 또 한번 짚고 넘어갑니다.  

 

*too busy to notice anything 너무 바빠서 아무것도 눈에 안들어올 때

Luckily, all the farmworkers seemed too busy to notice anything.(14-3/16p)  

농가의 바쁜 일상을 엿볼 수 있는 표현입니다. 

 

◈too ~ to 용법 중  <too busy to ~하기에는 너무 바쁜>를 예문으로 같이 살펴봅니다. 

She’s too busy to say bye. 그녀는 바빠서 인사 못해요.

I was too busy working to notice the time. 일하느라고 시간 가는 줄 몰랐어요.

I’m too busy to find time to breath. 한숨 돌릴 틈도 없이 바빠요. 

He was too busy to return her call. 그가 너무 바빠서 그녀에게 답신 전화를 하지 못했어.

 

*loom 베틀, 직기

She pointed to an open porch where young woman was weaving cloth on a loom.(14-3/16p)  

 

cf)loom 어렴풋이 보이다

A huge castle loomed out of the fog.(2-2/14p) 

 

loom이 명사로는 ‘베틀, 직기’란 뜻이고, 동사로는 ‘어렴풋이 보이다’에요. 매트하에서 두 가지 의미로 다 사용되었어요. 

 

*as my thank-you 감사의 표시로

Please accept this silk thread as my thank-you.(14-3/17p)   

 

*the cocoon of silkworms 누에고치

It is made from the cocoon of silkworms.(14-3/18p)  

 

*put to death ~를 처형하다

The Dragon King will have him put to death.(14-3/18p)   

put to death는 세계사 관련 책 읽다보면 정말 많이 나와요. 죽고 죽이는 역사~ 

 

*on your date (전치사 on) 쓰임에 주목해 주세요. 

Good luck on your date!(14-3/20p) 데이트 잘하세요! 잘되길 바라요! 

 

[매직문장] 14권-4  The Great Wall

• The man’s gaze fell on the open book in Jack’s hands.
• His mouth dropped open.
• He looked back at Jack and Annie with wide eyes.
• The cart slowly came to a halt.
• Suddenly the cart lurched forward.

 

*lurch (갑자기) 휘청거리다 

Suddenly the cart lurched forward.(14-4/22p) 갑자기 수레가 앞으로 휘청였다.

The moon buggy lurched backward.(8-4/31p) 달 사륜차가 뒤로가며 휘청거렸다. 

 

cross가 두 가지 뜻으로 쓰였어요. 다시한번 살펴봅니다. 

*cross (가로질러) 건너다; 가로지르다, 횡단하다

to go from one side of something such as a road or river to the other.

A lone line of men was crossing the road in front of the cart.(14-4/24p) 

The oxcart bumped across the wooden bridge that crossed over a moat.(14-6/33p)

 

*cross 스치다, 교차하다[엇갈리다]

-If an ｅxpression crosses someone's face, it appears briefly on their face.

-if an ｅxpression crosses someone's face or lips, it appears there for a short time.

+) A look of annoyance crossed her face. 그녀의 얼굴에 짜증스런 표정이 스쳤다.

+) A little smile crossed her lips. 그녀의 입가에 엷은 미소가 스쳤다.

*stretch along 뻗어있다

Finally, it stretched 3,700 miles along China's border.(14-4/25p) 

마침내, 그것(성벽)은 중국 국경을 따라서 쭉 뻗어있었다. 

 

*gaze (눈여겨 보는) 시선[눈길), (가만히) 응시하다[바라보다]

*fall on something ~으로 돌려지다, 쏠리다, ~위에 떨어지다

 

The man's gaze fell on the open book in Jack's hands.(14-4/25p)

그 남자의 시선이 잭의 손에 들려 있는 책에 쏠렸다. 

 

Then his gaze fell on the two bear masks.(12-4/32p)

그때 그의 눈길이 두 개의 곰 가면에 쏠렸다. 

 

매직북은 반복되는 어휘와 구문들, 또 비슷한 표현을 조금씩 바꿔서 쓰고 있어서 낭독하면서 점점 익숙하게 되어 참 좋아요. 앞으로도 계속 나와요. 이렇게 가랑비에 젖어 들어가 보아요. 

 

*mouth drop 입이 딱 벌어지다

His mouth dropped open.(14-4/25p)

Jack felt his stomach drop.(19-4/28p) 

 

놀랄 때는 drop이란 단어를 자주 사용해요.

mouth drop/ stomach drop

우리말로는 ‘간 떨어질뻔했다’ 또는 ‘가슴이 철렁했다’를 stomach drop으로 표현한 것도 같이 봐주세요. 19권에서 나와요.

[매직문장] 14-5 The Scholar

• Does that mean what I think it means?
• I have never met ones so honored who were so young. 
• He wants people to think only what he wants them to think.
• We have long been the most honored citizens in China.
• Indeed it is!

 

학창시절 열심히 배웠던 be made of 와 be made from 정리해 봅니다. 

Your books made of bamboo, but ours are made of paper.(14-6/27p)  

They were made of mud with straw roofs.(14-6/34p)  

These were made of painted wood and pottery tiles.(14-6/34p)

 

*be made of (물리적 변화) 재료의 원래 모습이 그대로 남아있는 경우

Desks are made of wood.

-나무로 책상을 만들면 나무모습이 남아있어 of를 써요. 

 

The books are made of paper. 

The house is made of bricks.

The necklace is made of gold. 

 

*be made from (화학적 변화) 재료의 원래 모습이 남아있지 않은 경우

Wine is made from grapes.

-와인은 포도로 만들어지는데 포도모습이 남아있지 않아서 from을 써요.

 

Paper is made from wood.

Cheese is made from milk.

This jam is made from grapes. 

 

*fill one's eye 눈에 가득 차다

Tears filled his eyes.(14-5/27p) 

His eyes watered.(13-8/58p)

13권에서 나왔던 이 문장이 생각났어요. 눈에 눈물이 고이는 걸 다르게 표현하고 있지요. 

 

*fade 시들다, 빛[색]이 희미해지다

The scholar's smile faded.(14-5/28p)

The faded sing said GENERAL STORE.(10-2/13p)

The fading daylight lit a piano in the corner of the room.(10-3/17p)

10권 고스트 타운에서도 나왔던 fade, 

그러나 fade해지는 이 기억~

 

*go into hiding 숨다, 지하로 잠입하다 

And many of us have gone into hiding.(14-5/28p)

 

*mouth drop 입이 딱 벌어지다

The scholar’s mouth dropped open again.(14-5/29p)

His mouth dropped open.(14-4/25p)

Jack's mouth dropped open.(2-5/39p)

Jack felt his stomach drop.(19-4/28p) 

 

놀랄 때 사용하는 mouth drop 또 나왔어요. 3기가 하고 있는 2권에서도 나와서 반가웠어요. 

앞으로 배울 stomach drop도 한번 더 보고 가요. 

 

황당한 말을 들었을 때 쓸 수 있는 문장
