But the intensity of suffering is something that is really without precedent in modern times.

Famines have been consigned to the past.

You wrote an op-ed for The New York Times saying we might be past the age of famines, right?

I had to make a rather terrible swerve.

And what all contemporary famines have in common is that they are man-made - gendered language deliberate.

They're still culpable.

+) It was said that some are culpable, but others are not culpable at all. 

   누군가는 죄가 있고 누군가는 죄가 전혀 없었다.

*impunity 불처벌, 면책

I think there's a sense of impunity among the politicians and generals who use it.

*pushback (계획·변화 등에 대한) 반발

There was certainly a pushback.

*inclination 경향, 경사

*show inclination 편향성을 보이다

I'm afraid the Israelis are showing much the same inclination in Gaza.

*pressing needs 긴급한 요구

What do you think are the most pressing needs?

*get away with something (나쁜 짓을 하고도) 처벌을 모면하다[그냥 넘어가다], (비교적 가벼운 처벌을) 받다 

I'm afraid we're letting the Israelis get away with it.

*a cease-fire 정전, 휴전

The most immediate need is for a cease-fire.

*onerous 아주 힘든, 성가신

The restrictions on who's allowed to operate and what aid can be brought in are so onerous that this famine is being allowed to develop.

Aid agencies have become more and more adept at tackling widespread hunger But political conflict is what keeps enough food from being grown or delivered in places like Ethiopia and Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, Haiti and North Korea and, of course, now in Gaza .
