▶Prologue

She once told me that the key to happiness was achievable dreams, and hers were nothing out of the ordinary.

-[명사] hunch; (불길한) foreboding, premonition, (formal) presentiment,

-[동사] have a hunch[premonition] (of/that)
+) I got a hunch.
+) I had a hunch (that) you’d be back.

+) My hunch proved right.

Two or three kids, she was never clear on that, but my hunch is that when the time came, she would have suggested that we let nature take its course and allow God to make the decision.

*lost in something ~에 빠져있다

*lost in each other's arms

I could imagine lying beside her in bed at the end of the day, holding her while we talked and laughed, lost in each other's arms.

+) The whole story sounds very far-fetched.
+) The storyline of the movie was too far-fetched.
+) That sounds a little far-fetched to me.

It doesn't sound so far-fetched, right?

+) Some chameleons blend into their surroundings.
+) The colors of the rainbow blend into one another.

In the army, you learn to blend into your surroundings, and I learned well, because I had no desire to die in some backward foreign dump in the middle of the Iraqi desert.

+) The wheels of change have been set in motion.

When a person sets a things in motion, there's a feeling of unease, almost regret, until you learn the truth.

brine

Birds have begun their morning calls, and the air is perfumed with the scent of pine and earth; different from the brine and salt of my hometown.

*for dear life 필사적으로, 죽어라고

*hang on for dear life

I rode with her once, luckily without injury, and as I was hanging on for dear lfe, I remember thinking that she looked so relaxed in the saddle that she could have been watching television.

+) They swam towards the shore for dear life.
+) She was holding on to the rope for dear life.
Jack held on for dear life as they split the wind.(매직트리하우스 10-6/47p)

+)for one's life

They ran for their lives.(매직트리하우스 6-7/44p)

Swim for your life!(매직트리하우스 9-8/48p)

He was swimming for his life-and for Annie's life, too.(매직트리하우스 9-8/49p)

-for dear life/ for one's life

Study for your life!

Study for dear life!

*prick up ears 귀를 쫑긋 세우다

She rubs his nose while she whispers something, she pats his haunched, and when she turns away, his ears prick up as she heads totard the barn.

*bridle [ˈbraɪdl] (말에게 씌우는) 굴레, 굴레를 씌우다

*fine lines 잔주름

*station (특히 군인을) 배치하다[주둔시키다], 기차)역, (버스) 정거장[정류장]
I'd been stationed in Germany;

I sometimes wonder about the choices I've made.

*on leave 휴가로

*cost a fortune 엄청나게 비싸다=  cost an arm and a leg

+) It cost me a fortune.
+) Good food need not cost a fortune.
+) Where'd you get that new watch? I bet it cost a fortune.

It suits me.

I don't surf much anymore even on leave, but on my days off I ride my Harley north or south, wherever my mood strikes me. The Harley was the single best thing I've ever bought for myself, though it cost a fortune over there. It suits me, since I've become something of a loner.

PART 1

I was born i 1977, and I grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina, a city that proudly boasts the largest port in the state as well as a long and vibrant history but now strikes me more as a city that came about by accident. Sure, the weather was great and the beaches perfect, but it wasn't ready for the wave of Yankee retirees up north who wanted someplace cheap to spend their golden years.

*bisect [baɪˈsekt] 2등분[양분]하다

*off the coast 앞바다에, 인근 해역에

Since my dad had one of the steadiest, solid-citizen jobs on the planet-he drove a mail delivery route for the post office-we did okay.

+) the saving grace of modesty (겸손)의 미덕
+) by the saving grace of God 신의 가호로
+) But it does have one saving grace.
+) Her saving grace was that she was bright.

Unlike my friends's homes, though, our house was old and small; part of the porch had begun to sag, but the yard was its saving grace.

*teach oneself 독학하다 = study by oneself

It was the same summer I taught myself to surf.

*place a value on~을 가치있게 보다, ~에 가치를 두다/부여하다

While he placed a high value on education, school for me was like a social club with sports added in.

*poor posture 서투른 자세
*have bad[poor] posture  자세가 나쁘다

He had poor posture and tended to shuffle when he walked; I bounced from here to there, forever asking him to time how long it took me to run to the end of the block and back.

John은 dad에게 the end of the block and back 블록 끝까지 달리고 다시 돌아오는 시간을 재달라고 요청했다.

*as odd 이상하게

Our differences struck some of our neighbors as odd, which made sense, I suppose, considering that he'd raised me by himself.

*heap scorn on …

*neither A nor B: A도 아니고 B도 아니다, A도 B도 아닌

+) neither here nor there 중요하지 않은[상관없는] (=irrelevant)

He neither heaped scorn on her nor praised her, but he made sure that I included her in my prayers, no matter where she was or what she'd done.

But neither my grandfather nor my dad had been into collecting for the money.

But neither Alfonso nor Miguel answered.(Esperanza Rising 122p)

Neither Jack nor Annie could speak.(매직트리하우스 4-9/58p)

As the crew unloaded the boat, neither Jack nor Annie spoke.(매직트리하우스 22-7/50p)

+) I’m neither a maid nor slave!

+) She can speak neither English nor French.

+) Neither the cat nor dogs are in the house.

B 자리에 dogs가 복수형이기 때문에 be동사로 are 사용

+) Neither the students nor teacher is allowed to smoke.

To this day, I've never spoken a single word to her, nor do I have any desire to do so.(11p)
