[매직문장] 13권-6 The End Is Here
- The words at the top matched the one on their paper.
- He tore out of the scroll room.
- He saw something near the mermaid fountain.
- He flipped through the book on Roman times.
- They began frantically unrolling scrolls one by one.
- His hands shook as he turned the pages of the book.
*tear [ter] 화급히 뛰어가다, 날뛰다, 내닫다, 찢다/ tear [tɪr] 눈물
*tear out 성급히 나가다,...을 잡아 벗기다[뜯다], (...에서) 급히 뛰어나가다

-말을 더듬거릴 때 쓰는 단어들이 비슷하게 생겼어요.
매직트리하우스에 나온 단어들 같이 살펴봅니다.
*hardly ‘거의 ~ 않다’
*can hardly (can, could와 본동사 사이에 쓰여)거의 ... 할 수가 없다[...하기가 무척 어렵다]
The shadow on the sundial can hardly be seen at noon.(13-6/46p)
He could hardly speak.(8-2/13p) 말을 할 수가 없었다
With his backpack, his shoes, and his heavy clothes, he could hardly stay afloat.(2-8/50p)
His heart was beating so fast he could hardly think.(1-8/48p)
hardly ‘거의 ~ 않다’로 알고 있쥬. 아는 단어임에도 불구하고 우리 입에서는 잘 안나와요.
부정의 의미인데 오히려 문장 형태에 변화를 주지않아서 사용하기 쉬워요.
다시 복습해 봅니다.
나 술 잘 안마셔. 술 거의 안마셔.
I hardly drink.= I drink hardly. = I don’t like to drink.
don’t/ doesn’t/ didn’t...
인칭이나 시제 고민없이 문장에 hardly만 붙이면 되어 더 간단해요.
사실 한국말에서도 ‘난 그거 절대 안해’ 보다 ‘잘 안해’/ ‘난 그거 거의 안해’ 라고 더 많이 쓰죠. 잘 익혀두면 유용하게 쓸 수 있어요.
I hardly drink. 나 술 잘 안마셔.
I hardly have a meal. 밥 잘 안먹어.
I hardly take a nap. 낮잠 잘 안자.
I hardly go there. 거기 잘 안가.
I hardly watch movies. 영화 잘 안봐.
I hardly listen to music. 음악 잘 안들어.
[매직문장] 13권-7 The Sky Is Falling
- A blast of heat and dust nearly knocked them over.
- A great cloud of pumice, ash, and burning rock shot miles into the air.

*once의 두가지 의미를 살펴봅니다.

Once is more than enough.
한 번이면 충분해. 두번 다시는 경험하고 싶지 않아.
2. 일단 ~하면(if), ...할 때
‘~하면’의 의미로 if를 주로 사용하는데 once도 같이 사용해 봐요.
(일단)이란 말이 신경쓰여 활용을 잘 못하는 것 단어이기도 합니다.
일단, (일단)을 빼보셔도 됩니다.
Once it gets outside the volcano, it’s called “lava.”(13-7/49p)
Once, the mare’s loose, she'll break for Sunset.(10-6/41p)
once 접속사로서 두번째 의미에 집중해보고 일상생활에서도 써보는 연습을 해 보아요.

한국말로 해석하니 오히려 어색한 문장, 잭과 애니는 질문을 하려고 멈추지 않았다. 즉 어떠한 것도 물을 수 없었다. 잭이랑 애니가 궁금한 게 많았을텐데 상황이 상황이다 보니 뭔가를 물어보려고 멈추지 않았다는 의미요.
*charge 급히 가다, 달려가다, 돌격하다
*charge through ~을 뚫고 돌진하다
Together, they charged through the olive grove.(13-9/64p)
-charge와 through가 만나 올리브 숲을 통과해 급히 달려가는 느낌이 전달되죠.
charge라는 단어는 정말 여러가지 뜻이 있어요.
(상품서비스에 대한) 요금, 청구하다, (외상으로) 달아놓다, 신용카드로 사다, 담당하다, 충전하다, 돌격하다, 돌격, 고소, 고발 등등... 여러 뜻이 있어 문맥과 상황에 맞게 이해해야 해요. 매트하에서는 주로 ‘급히 가다, 달려가다’의 의미로 쓰이고 있어요.

[매직문장] 13-10 A Simple Explanation
- I can never thank you enough.

- He said in a hoarse voice.

고대 로마시대로 가서 영화 한 편 찍고 온 잭이 얼마나 피곤했겠어요. 그럴만 해요.

risk를 동사로 쓰니 간단히 표현되는 문장
