• He looked pleased with himself.
• Was his whole act a fake? Jack wondered. 
• Jack didn’t know whether to be scared or to laugh.
• Keep your head down and act friendly. 
• A joyful smile crossed her face.

 

잭은 우호적으로 보일려고 힘들게 미소를 계속 보내는데,

우리의 애니는 눈 뜨자마자  “Good morning, gorillas” 아침 인사 한방에

 

*pleased with …을 흡족하다, …을 기뻐하다

*pleased with oneself 스스로 만족하다

He looked pleased with himself.(26-6/36p)

-활용 안되어 어렵게 느껴지는 문장

계속 읽으며 입에 착착 붙여봅니다.

 

*go down on one's knees 무릎 꿇다

Then he went down on his knees.(26-6/37p)

 

*fall to one's knees 무릎을 꿇다

They all fell to their knees.(25-8/53p) 

 

‘무릎을 꿇다’ 다양한 표현들 복습해 봅니다. 

*drop one's knees  무릎을 꿇다(빌다)

=fall on one's knees

=get down on one's knees

=go on one's knees

She dropped to her knees.(20-4/27p)

 

*kneel 무릎을 꿇다

They crossed the room and knelt before the tired-looking man.(24-9/61p) 

Jack knelt down and touched the brown fur.(20-4/30p)

Then, kneeling on the brick floor, he wrote:(14-8/51p)

-dart가 동사로 뜻이 두 개가 있어요. 문맥에 따라 봐주세요.

dart가 가지고 있는 이미지 떠올리며 문장 읽어주세요. 

 

-매직트리하우스에서 cross가 두 가지 뜻으로 쓰였어요. 다시한번 살펴봅니다. 

1. cross 스치다, 교차하다[엇갈리다]

*smile cross one's face 얼굴에 미소가 번지다

 A joyful smile crossed her face.(26-6/39p)

A look of horror crossed the man's kind face.(14-2/13p)

-If an ｅxpression crosses someone's face, it appears briefly on their face.

-if an ｅxpression crosses someone's face or lips, it appears there for a short time.

+) A look of annoyance crossed her face. 그녀의 얼굴에 짜증스런 표정이 스쳤다.

+) A little smile crossed her lips. 그녀의 입가에 엷은 미소가 스쳤다.

 

2. cross (가로질러) 건너다; 가로지르다, 횡단하다

to go from one side of something such as a road or river to the other.

A lone line of men was crossing the road in front of the cart.(14-4/24p) 

The oxcart bumped across the wooden bridge that crossed over a moat.(14-6/33p)

 

[줍줍매직문장] 26권-7 Eating Out

• But he didn’t know how to join in the fun.
• On their ramble through the cloud forest, the gorillas found food everywhere. 
• The Silverback had moved closer to him 
• He didn't feel so left out.
• I don’t think they want me to come along.
• His lips tucked in a tight line.

 

*be about the size of ~와 비슷한 크기이다, ~만 하다

He was about the size of a two-year-old kid.(26-7/41p)

-실생활에서 자주 쓸 수 있는 문장이겠죠. 외웁시다요~!

 

*give a poke 찌르다, 쿡쿡 쑤시다 

He gave Annie a playful poke.(26-7/41p)

-give a~ 구문, 하나더 추가합니다. 

 

+)poke out ~를 내밀다

Then she poked her head out.(26-3/17p)

Teddy's head poked out the top.(19-3/20p)

Annie poked her head out of the tree house window.(1-1/5p)  

-poke out 항상 얼굴을 쑥 내미는 것만 생각했는데 

give a poke 하면 ‘찌르다, 쿡쿡 쑤시다’ 

 

*give a bark 짖다

*give a short bark 물어뜯듯이 짖다

Then he turned to his family and gave a short bark.(26-7/42p) 

-give a~ 구문, 또 하나더 추가입니다.

 

*line up 줄을 서다[이루다]

The gorillas began lining up behind the silverback.(26-7/42p)

-실버백 뒤로 쪼르르 줄서 있는 모습을 생각하니 너무 귀여워요. 

 

*travel 이동하다, 가다, 다니다, 여행하다

The baby traveled in his mother's arms.(26-7/42p)

-travel하면 여행하다라고 자동으로 생각나죠. 

원어민들은 이동의 의미로 더 자주 쓰고 있어요. 

 

*ramble (특히 전원 속을) 걷다[거닐다/소요하다]

On their ramble through the cloud forest, the gorillas found food everywhere.(26-7/43p) 

She and Bubu played tag in the drizzly woods.(26-7/43p)  

-안개 자욱한 숲 속을 거닐면서 여기저기서 먹을 거 찾아먹고, 

보슬보슬 비 내리는 숲속에서 술래잡기도 하고…

상상만으로도 평화로운 모습이에요. 

 

*mind 언짢아하다, 상관하다, 개의하다

But they didn’t seem to mind.(26-7/43p)  

He didn’t mind the rain so much.(26-7/48p)  

 

*spot 발견하다, 찾다, 알아채다

Big Guy had spotted him.(26-7/44p) 

-점, 얼룩이란 명사로 알고 있는 spot 

‘발견하다,  찾다, 알아채다’ 등의 동사로서의 쓰임도 배워봅니다. 

 

*on all fours 네 발로 (기는)

*down on all fours 네 다리로 기다

*drop on all fours 네 발로 기다

He went down on all fours.(26-7/45p) 

The gorilla dropped on all fours.(26-5/35p) 

 

*tear off 찢어[떼어]내다, 찢어내다, 뜯어 버리다

He tore off the leaf of a plant.(26-7/45p) 

The twister had torn the roof off the dugout and sucked everything out.(23-9/57p)

 

*left out 배제하다, 포함시키지 않다, 제외하다, 버려지다

*feel left out 소외감을 느끼다

He didn't feel so left out.(26-7/48p)

+) Then I would feel left out. 그러면 나 왕따되잖아. 

+) If you don't invite Lee, he'll feel left out.

    리를 초대하지 않으면 따돌림 당했다고 느낄거야. 

+) I feel left out at school. 난 학교에서 혼자인듯한 기분이야.

 

[줍줍매직문장] 26권-8 A Special Language

• Jack cracked up laughing.
• He reared back and charged Jack. With a flying tackle, he knocked Jack over. 
• His mother’s gaze then rested on Annie. 
• She reached out to comfort Bu-bu.
• The baby soon wiggled free and crawled around in the grass.

 

The rain ended.(26-8/49p)

-’비가 그쳤다’라는 말이 이렇게 간단하게 표현할 수 있어요.

 

*come to ~에 다다르다, ~에 이르다

*come to a stop 끝나다, 서다

*come to a halt 정지하다, 멈추다

*come to an end 끝나다, 끝장나다, 종말을 고하다

come to +  a stop→ come to a stop 끝나는 것에 다다르고,

come to + a halt → come to a halt 정지하는 것에 다다르고,

come to + an end → come to an end 끝나는 것에 다다르고,

 

Slowly the feeding came to a stop.(26-8/49p)

The wagon came to a halt.(21-6/45p)

The firing came to an end.(21-7/46p) 

-모두 같은 문장 구조를 가지고 있지요.

지금껏 여러번 나왔고, 앞으로도 또 나와요. 

 

+) All good things must come to an end. 모든 좋은 일에는 끝이 찾아온다

 

The silverback lay down and tucked his arms under his head.(26-8/49p)

Some beat the grasses until they were flat.(26-8/49p)

Then she made two extra beds for Jack and Annie.(26-8/50p)

-양팔로 머리를 고이고 누워있고, 잠자리를 평평하게 만들고 하는 모습이 사람 같아요. 

잭과 애니의 잠자리까지 마련해주는 마음 따뜻한 엄마 고릴라…

 

*rest on 시선이 머물다

His mother's gaze then rested on Annie.(26-8/50p)

His gaze rested on the scrolls in the corner.(12-9/62p)

The lion’s gaze rested on him.(11-9/62p)

 

The mother parted his hair and searched through it, picking at his skin now and then.(26-8/50p) 

She moved over to Annie and gently grabbed her pigtails. She studied it carefully.(26-8/50p) 

Oops! No thanks! No bugs on me! he said.(26-8/51p)

머리카락을 나누고 가끔씩 이를 뽑아내고.

애니에게 와서 땋은 머리를 부드럽게 붙잡고 조심스럽게 살펴보는 모습들...

예전 다큐에서 봤던 모습이 떠오릅니다.

sign language를 만들어내는 고릴라들, 정말 스마트하네요. 

 

*break free from 벗어나다, 도망치다

Jack broke free from the two small gorillas.(26-8/54p) 

 

*dash (급히) 서둘러 가다, 황급히[맹렬히] 달려감, 돌진, 질주

He jumped up and dashed into the forest.(26-8/55p) 

But Annie had dashed off in the other direction.(20-5/38p)

Annie dashed beneath the swinging monkeys.(19-2/15p)

Annie broke free and dashed over to Jack.(16-9/52p)

She dashed over to the book.(14-7/40p)

The huskies dashed off in a whirl of snow.(12-3/23p)

They leaped and dashed up the dusty road.(10-9/67p)

He dashed after Annie and the monkey.(6-7/41p)

They dashed around the corner just in time to see the cat disappear through a hole in the pyramid wall.(3-2/16p)

He saw Annie dashing across the real drawbridge.(2-3/23p)

Jack dashed across the bridge.(2-4/25p)

They dashed down the hill together.(1-7/43p)

-지금까지 나온  dash가 들어간 문장 정리해 보았어요.

기억을 떠올리며 읽어볼까요?

 

*crack 갈라지다, 금이 가다, 깨지다

*crack up 웃음을 터뜨리다,  마구 웃기 시작하다

 = to start laughing a lot = to make somebody laugh a lot

Jack cracked up laughing.(26-8/55p)

-’(웃음이) 빵 터지다’하는 느낌이래요. 

 

*a big smile 함박웃음, 환한 미소

Bu-bu showed her teeth in a big smile.(26-8/56p)

Annie smiled a big smile.(16-3/23p) 

-고릴라들이 이를 소복히 드러내서 웃는사진 속 한 장면이 생각나요. 

-여자라고는 볼 수 없는 고대 올림픽에 가서 여류시인을 만난 애니가 함박웃음을 지었었죠. 

 

*scoop 재빨리 들어올리다[움직이다]

She ran over to the baby gorilla and scooped him into her arms.(26-8/57p)

 

*scoop up 퍼올리다, 떠올리다

Annie scooped up a handful of grass.(20-4/33p) 풀 한 줌을 떠(퍼)올리고

Annie scooped him up.(18-7/49p)  테디를 안아 올리고

She scooped up the mouse.(5-2/13p) 피넛을 안아 올리고

He scooped it up.(1-7/46p)- it은 가방을 들어 올리고

 

-scoop하면 아이스크림이 퍼올리는 게 떠올라요. 

우리에게 아이스크림이 소중하듯 

아기 고릴라도 (소중하게) 얼른 들어올리고

아기 캥거루에 소중한 간식 풀 하나 더 추가하고

테디랑 피넛, 가방까지 안아 올렸다로 기억해 봐요. 

 

어디선가 흑표범이 나타나 아기 고릴라가 위험에 처하게 되는데 잭은 실버백 고릴라의 행동을 기억해 냅니다.

실버백의 행동에서 배운 대로 표범을 겁 줘서 쫓아내는 잭.

잭의 활약을 기대해 주세요. 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 26권-9 Good-bye, Gorilla

• His heart was too full.
• The happy, wild sound shot through the white mist, through the cool rain, straight into Jack’s heart. 
• Did you see what he just did?
• Big Guy lifted his hand in the air as if he were about to wave.
• Thanks for letting us be a part of your family.

 

*scare somebody off ~를 겁을 주다

He really had scared off a leopard!(26-9/60p)

 

*cling 꼭 붙잡다, 매달리다

*clung to ~에 매달리다, ~을 고수하다

+) cling-clung-clung

Bu-bu and Ho-ho ran to Big Guy and clung to his legs.(26-9/61p)

She was clinging to the fin of another dolphin!(9-8/51p)

-빅가이 다리에 매달리는 사랑스런 아기 고릴라들의 모습

이렇게 고릴라들의 버릇과 행동을 배워가네요. 

-9권에서 돌고래에게 매달려있던 애니의 모습도 떠올려 보세요. 

 

*duck (머리나 몸을) 휙[쑥] 수그리다[숨기다], 피하다

Jack ducked.(26-9/61p)

-오랜만에 나온 duck

빅가이 손이 잭에게 다가오니 순간 겁났나봐요. 얼른 홱 수그립니다. 

 

*as if 마치 ...인 것처럼, 흡사 ...와도 같이

*top of head (머리) 정수리 

*glow 빛나다, 타다, 발갛다, 발개지다

Jack felt as if the top of his head were glowing.(26-9/61p)

Big Guy lifted his hand in the air as if he were about to wave.(26-9/63p) 

Jack felt as if he weren’t completely human yet.(26-10/71p) 

-문장 안에서 편히 읽히는 as if 구문,

자연스럽게 생활에서 as if 구문을 써보는 연습을 해 볼까요? 

 

*what I did 내가 한 일[것]: 관계대명사 what

Did you see what he just did?(26-9/61p)

They’re probably telling them what I did, Jack thought.(26-9/63p)

-잭 스스로도 자신이 자랑스러운가봐요. 귀여운 잭!

 

+) Don't forget what I told you.(24-4/29p)

+) Everyone’s trying to save what’s important to them.(24-7/48p)

 

*put on 상연하다

He must have watched the show you put on.(26-9/61,62p)

-’put on’ 주로 ‘입다’의 의미로 그동안 쓰여왔었죠.

드디어 ‘상연하다’로 쓰인 문장이 나왔어요. 

 

*thanks for …에 대해 감사하다

*let (...을 하도록) 허락하다

 *be a part of ~의 일원이 되다, ~에 끼다

Thanks for letting us be a part of your family.(26-9/63p)

-일상생활하면서 아주 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 표현

 

+) thank you for ~해줘서 고맙다, ~에 대해 감사하다 

Thank you for helping this boy learn his lessons.(20-9/64,5p) 

Thank you for breaking the spell.(20-9/65p)  

 

*line up 줄을 서다[이루다]

The gorillas began lining up behind the silverback.(26-7/42p)

All the gorillas lined up behind him.(26-9/65p)

-실버백 뒤로 쪼르르 줄서 있는 모습을 생각하니 너무 귀여워요. 

질서정연한 고릴라 모습 확인합니다. 

 

*piggyback 등에 업고, 등에 진, (등에) 업기, 어부바

Ho-ho rode piggyback on his mom.(26-9/65p)

 

His heart was too full.(26-9/65p) 마음이 꽉 찬 느낌, 가슴이 벅차다

-to ->too 목적지를 지나쳤다는 느낌이라고 해요. 지나치고 넘치는 느낌의 too 

읽으면서 내내 my heart was too full 했어요. 

 

*glimpse (완전히는 못 보고) 잠깐[언뜻] 봄

*catch a glimpse of 언뜻보다,  흘끗보다

Jack hoped to catch one last glimpse of the gorilla family.(26-9/67p)

-잭이 이번 여행에서 성장한만큼 떠나기 아쉬운가봐요. 

 

+) He caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror. 

   그가 거울에 비친 자기 모습을 흘끗 보았다. 

+) I don’t know why, but I haven’t caught a glimpse of her for days. 

   무슨 일인지 그녀가 며칠동안 그림자도 안 보이는군.

*joyous 아주 기뻐하는, 기쁜, 기쁨을 주는 =joyful

*ring out 크게 울리다[들리다]

Suddenly, a joyous screech rang out.(26-9/67p)

-joyful 형태는 이곳저곳에서 봐서 익숙한데 joyous는 색달라 보여요. 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 26-10 A Special Magic

• He didn’t put up the umbrella.
• You have to love gorillas to really know them. 
• Jack felt as if he weren't completely human yet.
• There was still a bit of gorilla left in him.
• Sometimes lists don’t tell you much. You have to love gorillas to really know them. 
• It'll prove to her that we found a special magic.

 

*miss 그립다, 그리워하다, 놓치다, 빗맞다, 어긋나다

I miss them already.(26-10/69p)

-일상생활에서도 자주 쓰는 표현이죠. 

고릴라들과 함께 한 이번 여행이 잭에게는 너무나 소중하고 특별했어요. 

 

But sometimes lists don't tell you much.(26-10/70p)

You have to love gorillas to really know them.(26-10/70p)

-늘 책 먼저 살펴보고, 정석대로 하는 범생이 잭이 애니처럼 말해요. 

 

*as 접속사: ~하면서, ~하고 있을 때

He smiled as he showed it to Annie.(26-10/70p)

-접속사로 as가 잘 드러난 문장

+) Annie sometimes listens to music as she studies.

애니는 공부를 하면서 때때로 음악을 듣는다. 

 

*save 남기다, 구하다, 모으다, 저축하다, 저장하다

But I think we should save it for Morgan instead.(26-10/70p)

-save가 ‘남기다’의 의미로 쓰였어요. 

문장 안에서 instead 위치도 함께 봐주세요. 

 

*pull on [옷·구두·장갑 따위]를 잡아당겨 입다[신다, 끼다]

-to put an item  of clothing on quickly or with difficulty

*pull on one's backpack 배낭을 (잡아당겨) 매다

Jack pulled on his backpack.(26-10/71p)

Holding on to the railing, he used one hand to pull off his knapsack.(17-9/60p)

-pull off가 ‘빼다’의 의미로도 쓰였었죠. 다시한번 살펴봅니다.

-모두 같은 문장구조, 익숙해지도록 잘 봐둡시다. 

 

*there is still 여전히 있다

*a bit of 소량의 ..., 한 조각의...

There was still a bit of gorilla left in him(26-10/71p) 

A bit of moondust still on you.(8-10/66p)

+) He's a bit of mystery. 그는 좀 수수께끼 같은 사람이야.

+) She's a bit of an odd person. 그녀는 좀 이상한 사람이야. 

+) I've got a bit of shopping to do. 나 쇼핑할 게 좀 있어. 

+) Can we have a bit of hush? 우리 좀 조용히 있을 수 없겠니?

 

-똑 떨어지는 양이 아니라 그냥 조금의 의미로 자주 쓰이는 ‘a bit of’

영어를 자연스럽게 구사할 때 kind of, sort of…처럼 유용하게 쓸 수 있어요.
