Just I guess I didn't take calls very well. 그냥 제가 전화를 잘 못 받은 것 같아요. 

 

I guess I didn't practice well enough. 연습이 부족했나봐요. 

 

I lost my $295 and my background check money, and there's no way to get that back.

$295와 신원조회비를 썼는데, 그걸 되찾을 방법이 없어요.

 

Did they give you feedback? 그들이 피드백을 주었어요? 

 

Like, did they say what had gone wrong? 뭐가 잘못됐는지 말해줬어요? 

A lot of the people we spoke to just cut their losses and stopped here. 

우리와 얘기했던 많은 사람들은 손실을 줄이고 여기서 멈췄습니다.

 

Plus, she had already invested a lot of time and a lot of money into this Arise customer service thing.

게다가, 그녀는 이미 많은 시간과 돈을 이 Arise 고객 서비스 사업에 투자했었습니다.

I'm going to try it again and do something different.

After more than half a year of not getting paid and spending hundreds of dollars for training and equipment, she finally signed the contract to work. 

반년이 넘는 기간 동안 돈을 받지 못하고 훈련과 장비 구입에 수백 달러를 썼던 그녀는 마침내 일하기 위해 계약서에 서명했습니다. 

 

Just trying to brush it off. 그냥 별로 신경 안쓰려고 해요. 

Yvonne even looked up the weather in Orlando every day.

Yvonne은 심지어 매일 올랜도의 날씨를 알아보았죠.  

Yvonne says that at first, she was making pretty good money - about $14 an hour. 

Yvonne은 처음에 그녀가 시간당 $14로 꽤 많은 돈을 벌고 있었다고 말합니다. 

 

But when she looked at her paycheck, there was this fee taken out every time; $19.75 per paycheck goes right back to Arise.

On top of that, her pay kept getting cut, eventually down to around $9 an hour.

Now, Yvonne was not financially in a position to quit.

She'd gotten kind of trapped. 덫에 걸린 것 같았어요. 

 

After all the expenses - the Internet lines and the phone lines and the fax machines - Yvonne wasn't even sure she was earning minimum wage.

And, yes, there are minimum wage laws, but those only apply to people who are classified as employees.

This is how Arise is able to magically make that expensive chunk of customer service costs disappear. 

이것이  Arise가 마법처럼 비싼 고객 서비스 비용을 없앨 수 있는 방법입니다. 

 

So Arise argues that it does not run a call center with employees; it simply coordinates a network of teeny independent call service companies. Arise는 직원들과 콜 센터를 운영하는 것이 아니라 단지 작은 독립적인 콜 서비스 회사들의 네트워크를 편성(조직)하는 것이라고 주장합니다. 

Theoretically, one of the perks to being an independent contractor is that you are your own boss. 

이론적으로, 독립 계약자가 되는 특권 중 하나는 당신이 당신 자신의 상사라는 겁니다. 

 

You get to decide which work you take and which work you don't take.

당신은 어떤 일을 하고 어떤 일을 하지 않을지 결정하게 됩니다. 

 

You do not have another boss looking over your shoulder all the time, micromanaging. 

다른 상사가 항상 어깨너머로 보고, 사소한 일에도 신경쓰지 않아도 된다는 것이죠.

 

These are the things you gain when you give up the rights that employees have.

이런 것들은 직원들이 가지고 있는 권리를 포기하면 얻게 되는 것입니다.

 

So, for example, her calls were monitored, recorded and graded.

그래서 예를 들어, 그녀의 전화는 감시되고, 녹음되고, 등급이 매겨졌습니다. 

Yvonne was constantly nervous about losing her job.

Yvonne은 직장을 잃는 것에 대해 끊임없이 불안해했습니다. 

 

She woke up feeling sick, but she'd already agreed to take calls that day.

그녀는 아파서 일어났지만, 그날 이미 전화를 받기로 동의했었습니다.

I was so sick, you know, I couldn't even call in.

It felt to her like she was essentially an employee of Arise without the rights of an employee.

Eventually, Yvonne realized she just wasn't earning enough money to make it worth it.

She was worried that she was getting demerits for every little noise in the background.

그녀는 배경의 작은 소음 하나하나가 벌점을 받는 것을 걱정했고요.

 

That was when I knew enough was enough. 그때 충분하다는 것을 알았어요. 

 

We also found that they've been able to keep growing without really changing much of anything at all.

우리는 또한 그들이 실제로 아무것도 바꾸지 않고 계속해서 성장할 수 있다는 것을 발견했습니다.
