2.shine이 (타동사)로 쓰여 ‘광을 내다, 닦아서 윤이 나게 하다’이면

반짝반짝 광을 내는 '슈샤인보이'는 오직 shined만 가능

The mammoth looked like a giant elephant with shaggy reddish hair and long, curved tusks.(7-7/47p) 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 26권-3 Bu-bu

  • He noticed she was about the size of a three-year-old kid.
  • To his relief, the gorilla settled on a branch. Annie did the same. 
  • Then she bounded away through the misty forest.
  • "-turn every animal into your best friend,"
  • You don’t have to turn every animal into your friend.
  • Her bright brown eyes were full of mischief.

 

*against ~를 배경으로, ~와 대조적으로

The gorilla's fur was very black against the green leaves.(26-3/17p) 

A ship was outlined against the sky!(15-5/39p)

-against는 한글로 번역했을 때 딱히 표현되는 말이 아니라 여기저기서 많이보고 익숙한데 활용이 잘 안 되는 단어중 하나지요. against 참 다양하게 쓰이는 것 같아요. 

 

Rain tapped against his window.(26-1/3p)

The sound of the waves against the rocks grew louder.(15-7/47p)

-창문을 두드릴 때, 파도가 바위에 부딪힐 때 against 

 

She pressed her boot against his and pulled him up.(8-4/29p)  

She pushed her feet against the side of the pit.(7-7/45p)  

She kept pressing against the side of the pit.(7-7/45p)  

-무언가를 밀 때 against와 잘 어울리죠. 

7권에서 구덩이에 빠졌을 때 발로 디디며 올라오던 표현에서도 against를 썼죠.

 

*mischief 장난, 장난기

*full of mischief 장난기 가득한 

Her bright brown eyes were full of mischief.(26-3/17p)

-장난기 가득한 아기고릴라 모습 떠오르시죠.

 

*poke out ~를 내밀다

Then she poked her head out.(26-3/17p)

 

*stick out ~을 내밀다

She stuck out her tongue.(26-3/18p)

 

*bound (특히 신이 나서) 껑충껑충 달리다

-to run or jump taking large steps when you are full of energy or excitement

Then she bounded away through the misty forest.(26-3/18p)

She bounded past Jack - almost flying through the air.(8-4/26,27p)

He bounded up and down.(8-4/27p) 

Annie bounded into the crater.(8-4/30p)

-8권 달여행 갔을 때, 잭이랑 애니가 신나서 bound 했었다죠. 

 

*방향 앞에는 전치사 in->  in (the/different/ all/ every...) direction

Jack hurried in the direction of the noise.(26-3/19p)

Jack crawled in the direction of Annie’s voice.(24-4/20p)

They’re all going in different directions.(24-4/33p)

People started running in all directions.(24-7/49p)

In the forum, everyone was running in every direction.(13-8/54p)

 

*fall 저물다, 지다, 떨어지다

*fall fast 빨리 저물다, 뚝 떨어지다

Is night falling?(26-3/20p) 밤이 오고 있는 건가? 

By the time they came to the riverbank, night was falling.(25-9/62p)

Night was falling fast.(5-1/4p)  

-밤이 저물다할 때 fall이란 동사를 쓰는 것 기억나시죠? . 

 

*동사 come 

But his warning came too late.

 -warning 경고가 늦었어요.

영어는 동사의 쓰임으로 다양한 표현을 나타낼수 있죠. 그래서 외국인으로서 영어배우기 어렵기도 해요. 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 26권-4 Nightmare

  • He quickly pushed the thought away.
  • But he couldn’t hear anything above the loud patter of the rain. 
  • He took his backpack off and rested his head on it. 
  • He took off his jacket and draped it over her.
  • Their fun adventure in the cloud forest had turned into a nightmare.

 

*get one's breath 숨을 돌리다 =catch one's breath 

"just - got the breath - knocked out of me -"(26-4/23p)

“No, no, catch your breath,” said Jack.(26-4/24p)

 

*bite one’s lower lip 아랫입술을 깨물다

She bit her lower lip as if she were worried.(26-4/23p)

-아기 고릴라도 걱정이 되었나봐요. 

*hit (어떤 장소, 상황에) 이르다, 도달하다, 치다, 강타하다

Just then, he felt a drop of water hit his arm.(26-4/24p)

She covered her eyes when the light hit her face.(16-1/6p) 

For the first time, it really hit Jack.(8-4/26p) 

Where Jack's boots hit the ground, moon-dust gracefully sprayed into space.(8-4/28p)

-우리 말에도 비슷한 표현이 있어서 반갑네요.

잭도 드디어 궁금해합니다. 

 

*of all 모든 …중에서[다른  …도 아닌](대단히 놀라움을 나타냄)

*worst of all 무엇보다도 나쁜 것은 

 Worst of all, he couldn't find Annie.(26-4/27p)

+) This is the worst of all. 이거 정말 최악이네요.

+) You’re the worst of all! 너가 더 기분 나빠!

[줍줍매직문장] 26-5 Silverback

  • The gorillas were all sizes.
  • Jack stumbled back through the bush until he came to a thick wall of plants.

*bob 까딱하고 움직이다

As the small gorilla led him through the cloud forest, her head bobbed above the leafy plants.(26-5/29p) 

-우거진 나뭇잎 사이로 부-부의 머리가 보일듯 말듯, 까딱까딱 움직이는 모습이 상상되죠.

-바닷속 여행하던 9권, 바이킹 이야기 15권에서도 나왔던 단어, 기억하시죠?

bob하면 떠오르는 bob cat

-어떻게 주무세요?

The gorillas were all sizes.(26-5/29p) 

-온갖 크기의 고릴라가 있다는 표현을 all sizes로 간단하게 할 수 있네요. 

 

*fast asleep 깊이 잠들다

Annie was fast asleep in the grass!(26-5/30p) 

-fast가 있어 빨리 잠든 줄 알았는데 

‘fast asleep‘는 깊이 잠들다

성격좋은 애니는 어디서나 잘먹고 잘 잘 것 같아요.

 

*in one's tracks (구어) 그 자리에서, 즉각, 당장

Jack stopped in his tracks.(26-5/31p) 

 

Walking on his knuckles, he stepped toward Jack.(33.p) 

-손가락 관절로 걸어다니는 고릴라 모습 생각해 보면 이해가 쉽죠.

 

*brush 덤불, 잡목림, 미개척지, 솔질하다, 털다

Jack stumbled back through the brush until he came to a thick wall of plants.(26-5/34p)  

He kept smiling a friendly smile as he crawled through the brush toward the clearing.(26-6/37p) 

He stumbled blindly through the brush.(20-5/39p)

-brush가 덤불, 잡목림이란 뜻으로 명사로 쓰였어요.

매직트리하우스 읽으며 단어의 다양한 쓰임을 배우게 됩니다. 

 

*gnash one's teeth 분노로, 화가나서 이를 갈다

He gnashed his teeth.(26-5/35p) 

 

*cup 두 손을 (컵 모양으로) 동그랗게 모아쥐다, ~을 감싸다

*cup one's hands 손을 오목하게 오므리다

He cupped his hands.(26-5/35p) 

Slim cupped his hands around his mouth.(10-8/62p) 

-10권 카우보이편에서 슬림이 “Who am I?”하며 메아리 치던 장면 기억해 봅니다. 

 

*on all fours 네 발로 (기는)

*drop on all fours 네 발로 기다

The gorilla dropped on all fours.(26-5/35p) 

 

*scramble  재빨리 움직이다, 서로 밀치다

Jack scrambled on his hands and knees over to a tree.(26-5/35p) 

Jack scrambled out of bed.(23-1/3p)

They climbed up the rope ladder and scrambled into the tree house.(23-9/65p)

"I know, I know,” said Jack, scrambling out of bed.(22-1/4p)

They climbed up the swaying ladder and scrambled into the tree house.(22-9/64p)

She scrambled out of the tree house.(13-6/40p) 

They grabbed the rope ladder and scrambled up to the tree house.(13-9/64p) 

Jack scrambled to his feet.(12-7/48p)

-지금까지 나온 scramble이 들어간 문장입니다. 

 

*mania 미치광이

*tear 찢다, 쥐어뜯다, 눈물

*to pieces 산산이, 조각조각으로

*tear to pieces 갈기갈기 찢다, 산산조각내다

He waited for the maniac gorilla to find him and tear him to pieces.(26-5/35p) 

-’tear’ 정말 다양한 의미로 쓰이는 단어지요.

여기서는 찢다, 쥐어뜯다의 의미로 쓰였어요. 

-그나저나 잭이 얼마나 무서웠을까요. 

 

*tear across ~을 둘로 찢다

The twister was whirling and tearing across the grass.(23-7/47p)

 

*tear off 찢어내다, 뜯어 버리다

The twister had torn the roof off the dugout and sucked everything out.(23-9/57p)

 

+)tear 화급히 뛰어가다, 날뛰다, 내닫다

The dog tore down the hill.(18-6/44p)

Just as the giant wooden gates started to close, they tore through them.(14-9/59p)

Then, clutching the book, he tore out of the scroll room.(13-6/43p)
