테디의 마법을 풀어주기 위해 마지막 특별한 선물을 캥거루에게 받기 위해 간 곳은 오스트레일리아. 관목 우거진 숲에서 처음으로 만난 것은 코알라, 그리고 호주에만 서식한다는 emus, 당나귀울음소리와 비슷하다는 Kookaburra, 그리고, 캥거루를 만나요.

 

간단하고 유용한 표현들이 많아요. 외웁시다~

이제는 너무 익숙한 ‘come to’ 

어느 장소에 이르다 할 때도 쓰지만 ‘이 지경이 된거야’하는 느낌으로도 많이 쓰여요. 

페어런트후드 시즌 1, 3화에서 아들 맥스가 학교에서 쫓겨나고 새학교를 찾는 과정에서 Footpath Elementary에 들어가기를 바라면서 아담이 티벳산 prayer stone을 손에 꼭 쥐고 있는 모습을 사라가 보고 말합니다. 

“It's come to this? (상황이) 이렇게 된 거야? 이 지경까지 된 거야?”

*scrubby (나무가)잘 자라지 못한, 잡목이 우거진 

*droopy 축 늘어진, 의기소침한

The tree house had landed in a scrubby forest filled with droopy plants.(20-2/8p)

 

*scrawny 수척한 

They passed bushes and scrawny trees.(20-2/12p)

 

*sit back (의자에) 깊숙이 앉다, 편하게 앉다

*sit back on one's heels 무릎꿇고 앉다

He sat back on his heels.(20-2/9p)

Jack sat back on his heels.(5-10/65p) 

 

-무릎 끓고 앉으면 엉덩이가 발뒤꿈치에 닿지요.

엉덩이가 발뒤꿈치에 닿게 깊숙이 앉은 모습 떠올려보세요.

‘무릎으로 기다’라는 표현도 여러번 나왔었죠. 한번 떠올려 봅니다.

‘cackle’ 13권 폼페이에서 old woman=soothsayer를 표현할 때 나왔던 단어였죠.

-to laugh in a loud, unpleasant, and sometimes unkind way.

-전속력이라 표현할 때는 at full speed, with all speed 라고 쓰는 걸로 알고 있었는데 full대신 top도 쓰네요.

최고조에 이르는 그 지점을 콕 짚어서 전치사는 at이 쓰였어요. 

 

The fire was spreading quickly.(20-5/36p) 

생각만 해도 정말 마음 아픈 상황이에요. 

 

*sting 찌르다, 자극하다

Jack's eyes stung.(20-5/37p) 눈이 매웠다. 

My eyes sting!

-매캐한 연기 속에 있을 때 ‘눈 매워’하고 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 쉽고 간단한 표현.

 

*burn down (화재로) 소실되다. 태워버리다.

We have to get back to the tree house before it burns down.(20-5/37p)

 

*billow (연기,구름)이 피어오르다.

Smoke billowed everywhere.(20-5/37p)

캘리포니아 대지진과 관련된 24권에서도 나와요. 

 

*dash (급히) 서둘러 가다, 황급히[맹렬히] 달려감, 돌진, 질주

Annie broke free and dashed over to Jack.(16-9/52p)

-이제는 너무 익숙해진 단어 stream

문맥 속에서 명사로 ‘개울이나 시내’로 쓰였는지, 

동사로 ‘줄줄 흐르다, 줄줄이 이어지다’로 쓰였는지 확인해 봅니다. 

5권에서는 주로  명사로 개울의 의미로 쓰였었죠. 문장 한번 읽으며 복습해 봅니다.

*brush 덤불, 잡목림, 스치다, 털다

정말 자주 보는 구문 come to,  문장하나 더 추가합니다. 앞으로도 밑줄 쫙~해요.
