• The roar grew deafening.
• With all his might, Jack held on to Annie and pulled her along.
• I feel like something awful is about to happen.
• They tried to open the door, but it wouldn’t budge.
• Jack’s heart nearly jumped out of his chest.
• They all seemed to be going in different directions.

 

*take on 특정한 특질[모습] 등을 띠다 

The black clouds had taken on an odd greenish color.(23-7/46p)

+)The chameleon can take on the colors of its background.

   카멜레온은 배경색을 띨 수 있다. 

+) His voice took on a more serious tone.

   목소리 톤이 더 심상치 않았다.

-swirl에 into가 붙어 표현이 좀더 생생해진 것 같아요. 

 

*be about to happen 곧 일어날 것 같다

I feel like something awful is about to happen.(23-7/47p)

*jump out of …에서 뛰쳐나오다

Jack's heart nearly jumped out of his chest.(23-7/47p)

He threw back his covers and jumped out of bed.(16-1/3p) 

-세상에나 가슴에서 심장이 뛰쳐나올 것 같다니 얼마나 놀라운 상황인지… 

 

*tear across ~을 둘로 찢다

The twister was whirling and tearing across the grass.(23-7/47p)

 

회오리바람이 얼마나 거세었는지 알 수 있는 문장

The wind threw them to the ground.(23-7/51p) 

The sound of the twister drowned out his voice.(23-7/52p) 

 

*with all one’s might 전력을 다하여, 힘껏, 혼신의 힘을 다하여

-회오리바람 속에서 긴박한 순간이 눈에 그려져요. 직접 보면 얼마나 무서울까 싶어요. 

 

*rip 대단한 속력으로(거칠게) 돌진하다

The wind ripped up grass and earth around them.(23-7/51p)

+) The car ripped along the highway.

 

*deafen 귀청이 터질 것 같은

*deafening 귀를 먹먹하게 만들다, 귀청이 터질것 같다

The roar grew deafening.(23-7/51p)

 

*budge (부정문에서) 조금 움직이다, 양보하다

-If someone or something will not budge, they will not move. 

They tried to open the door, but it wouldn't budge.(23-7/51p)

It wouldn't budge.(3-9/52p)

+) I already tried talking to him, but he wouldn't budge.

 

-뭔가 열려도 시도했는데 열리지 않고 꿈쩍도 안할 때

생각/마음을 조금도 바꿀 기미를 보이지 않을 때

"wouldn't budge" 써 볼까요? 

 

*drown out (소음이)~을 들리지 않게 하다

The sound of the twister drowned out his voice.(23-7/52p)

 

[줍줍매직문장] 23권-8 Get Below!

• He was totally swept up in the howl of the wind.
• A ladder led down into the cellar. 
• No one spoke for a moment in the blackness.
• Inside, the benches were overturned.
• He closed the door behind him, leaving everyone in total darkness.

Miss Neely and the three kids were pressed against the dirt wall.(23-8/53p)

 

-against라는 전치사가 익숙하지 않아 활용하기 어려워요. 

하나씩 같이 챙겨봅니다. 앞으로 문장 안에서 against 만나면 동글뱅이 치고 한번 살펴보는 습관을 가져보아요.

오래된 책에는 없는 그림이고요, 새 책에 그림이 바뀌어 있어요. 이미지를 떠올리며 기억하면 좋아요. 

 

*whip 채찍질하다

Kate and Will screamed as the winds whipped around the room.(23-8/53p)

-바람이 방에서까지 채찍질한다는 표현을 하니 아이들이 얼마나 놀랐을지요. 

 

*pull off 벗겨내다, 벗다, 해내다, 성사시키다

Together, Jack and Annie pulled the rug off the floor and uncovered the cellar door.(23-8/54p)

-옷을 잡아당겨 벗을 때도 pull off,  러그를 힘겹게 잡아서 벗겨낼 때도 pull off

 

*barrel (통제가 안 되게) 쏜살같이 달리다, 질주하다, (목재금속으로 된 대형) 통

*sound like ~처럼 들리다

-모두 안전하게 지하실로 대피하게 하고, 제일 마지막에 내려와 문을 닫는 젭, 까칠하기만 한 녀석인 줄 알았는데 듬직한 모습을 보여주네요.

*die down 차츰 잦아들다, 약해지다, 희미해지다

The noise died down.(23-8/56p) 

 

*die away 서서히 사라지다,잦아들다

-die라는 동사에 down/ away를 붙여 더 생생한 느낌을 전해주고 있어요. 

 

*break the silence 말문을 열다, 침묵을 깨다, 정적을 깨다

*tear off 찢어내다, 뜯어 버리다

*suck out 빨아들이다

The twister had torn the roof off the dugout and sucked everything out.(23-9/57p)

-회오리바람이 지붕도 뜯어 날려버리고, 모든 것은 빨아들이고 그 위력을 가늠할 수 있는 문장이네요.

실제로 보면 정말 무섭고 끔찍하겠어요. 

 

*전치사 +감정추상명사 

-in horror/ in shock/ in wonder/ in fear/ in awe…

They all stared in shock at the empty space.(23-9/57p)→ in shock

He was still in shock.(20-10/69p)→ in shock

Jack could only stare in horror.(3-5/26p) → in horror

Jack was still in shock.(3-5/28p ) → in shock

He held his breath as he stared in awe.(2-4/26p) → in awe

 

-문장에서의 위치도 같이 살펴봐주세요. 

이렇게 문장을 정리해놓고 보니 주로 놀라는 건 잭이네요. 

 

*thick with 두껍게 덮여있는

The air was thick with dust and bits of grass. (23-9/58p)

처음에 성공하지 못하면, 계속 다시 시도해라. Yes, sir! 저한테 충고하는 말같아요.

-나이어린 닐리 선생님이 참 성숙하고 바른 생각을 가졌어요.

-우리 젭이 변했어요. 목표도 생기고, 동기부여가 된 것 같아요. 

자신의 원하는 것을 aim to 구문을 이용해서 문장만들기 해볼까요?

-잭과 애니가 속 참 깊어요. 용기를 주는 착한 아이들…

우리 인생에 너무 늦었다라는 것은 절대 없다고 생각하기에, 우리가 이 나이에도 영어공부 하고 있는 게 아닐까 싶어요. 각자 자신만의 때가 있다고 믿어요. 저 스스로에게도 여러분에게도 해주고 싶은 말이에요. It's never too late!

-mighty라는 단어, 17권에서 나왔었죠. 그때는 형용사로서 ‘웅장한’의 의미로 쓰였는데 23권에서는 부사로서 ‘대단히’하는 뜻으로 쓰였어요. 문장 안에서 쓰임과 위치도 한번 확인해 주세요. 

 

*reckon ~라고 생각하다

I reckon we’d all be good friends if you did.(23-9/64p)

I reckon we would.(23-9/64p)

I reckon I could use some brave, smart help.(10-5/37p)

 

*break through (무력으로 ~을) 뚫고 나아가다

Suddenly, the sun broke through the clouds.(23-9/64p) 

-기본동사 break와 through가 만나 해가 구름을 뚫고 나온 걸 잘 표현하고 있어요.

동사와 전치사가 만나 표현을 생생하고 풍부하게 해줘요. 

 

The wildflowers danced in a gentle breeze.(23-9/64p)

Shadows danced on the wall.(5-6/33p)

Shadows danced on the walls and ceiling.(3-10/60p)

 

-들꽃들이 바람에 춤추고, 그림자도 벽에서, 천장에서 춤을 춰요. 

이미지가 연상되고 dance로 표현하다니 넘 멋져요. 

 

*on one's own 혼자서

The tree house simply started to spin on its own.(23-9/65p) 

-트리하우스가 아이들이 회오리바람으로 고생한 걸 알아서 이번에는 바람이 불지 않고 혼자서 조용히 돌아가요.

나름 아이들 배려해주는 착한 트리하우스~  

 

[줍줍매직문장] 23-10 The Third Writing

• Life here is pretty easy compared to pioneer life.
• The kindness of Will and Kate, making friends with Jeb, the courage of Miss Neely - these memories, Jack thought, he would never forget.
• We must try to hold on to the good memories, Miss Neely had said, and let go of the bad ones.
• You did just what that poem says you should do.

 

*wear one’s clothes 옷을 입다 <이미 입고 있는 상태>

*throw one’s clothes 옷을 걸치다

 

He and Annie were wearing their own clothes again.(23-10/66p)    

She wore her rain poncho over her pajamas and held a flashlight.(17-1/4p)   

 

He threw on his clothes.(23-1/3p) 

Jack threw his rain poncho over his pajamas.(17-1/5p)  

 

*compared to ~와 비교하여 

비교급 구문없이 compared to로 표현

Life here is pretty easy compared to pioneer life.(23-10/67p)   

The brightly lit Titanic seemed so solid and safe compared to the little lifeboat.(17-7/49p) 

-개척자들의 삶이 얼마나 힘겨웠을까 싶어요. 현실로 돌아온 잭과 애니가 더 감사하며 생활할 것 같아요. 

 

*not much 많지 않은

Come back early Wednesday morning.(23-10/68p)   

Wednesday? Man, that’s tomorrow.(23-10/68p)  

Not much time to recover.(23-10/68p) 

-바로 내일 오라니, 잭과 애니도 힘들겠어요^^
