Tornado = Twister[회오리 바람]

 

*stream 줄줄[계속] 흐르다[흘러나오다], 줄줄이 이어지다, 개울, 시내

*stream from one's eyes 눈물이 앞을 가리다, 눈물이 줄줄 흐르다

-When light streams into or out of a place, it shines strongly into or out of it.

-1권부터 시작해서 거의 매 권마다 stream이란 단어가 나왔어요.

기억을 떠올려보시고,  문맥과 상황에 따른 쓰임 살펴보세요. 

 

*hardly 거의 ... 할 수가 없다, ...하기가 무척 어렵다, 막 ...하자마자

hardly 복습해 봅니다. 얼마나 기억하고 있을까요? hardly ‘거의 ~ 않다’로 알고 있쥬. 아는 단어임에도 불구하고 우리 입에서는 잘 안나와요. 부정의 의미인데 오히려 문장 형태에 변화를 주지않아서 사용하기 쉬워요. 그츄~

 

나 술 잘 안마셔. 술 거의 안마셔. 

I hardly drink.= I drink hardly. = I don’t like to drink. 

 

don’t/ doesn’t/ didn’t...

인칭이나 시제 고민없이 문장에 hardly만 붙이면 되어 더 간단해요. 

사실 한국말에서도 ‘난 그거 절대 안해’ 보다 ‘잘 안해’/ ‘난 그거 거의 안해’ 라고 더 많이 쓰죠. 잘 익혀두면 유용하게 쓸 수 있어요. 

 

I hardly drink. 나 술 잘 안마셔.

I hardly have a meal. 밥 잘 안먹어.

I hardly take a nap. 낮잠 잘 안자. 

I hardly go there. 거기 잘 안가. 

I hardly watch movies. 영화 잘 안봐. 

I hardly listen to music. 음악 잘 안들어.

 

He could hardly wait to find out where she was sending them today.(23-1/3p) 

Jack hardly knew the drummer boy.(21-8/61p) 

Jack could hardly see, but he followed Annie.(13-8/59p) 

 

-hardly, barely, nearly... 등등의 부사 위치도 문장 안에서 한번 확인해 보시고요.

could hardly, could barely, could nearly …

 

◈hardly 거의 ~않다[...하기가 무척 어렵다]

 +) Hardly anyone came. 거의 아무도 오지 않았다. 

 

+) I hardly slept a wink. 나는 거의 눈도 붙이지 못했다. 

 

+) We hardly know each other. 우리는 서로 거의 잘 모른다. 

 

◈can/could hardly + 동사 “거의 ... 할 수 없다”

 +) I can hardly tell. 거의 알아볼 수 없는데. 

 

+) She could hardly keep from laughing. 

    그녀는 웃음을 참기가 힘들었다. 

 

♥We can hardly stop reading Magic Tree House!

 

*scramble 재빨리 움직이다

Jack scrambled out of bed.(23-1/3p) 

She scrambled out of the tree house.(15-6/40p) 

1권부터 계속해서 나오는 단어 scramble,

여기에 out of가 붙어 scrambled out of ~에서 급히 재빨리 허둥지둥 나오는 의미가 되지요. 다시한번더 새겨봅니다. 

 

*throw on one's clothes (옷 등을) 급히 걸치다, 옷을 허둥지둥 입다 

-to quickly put on a piece of clothing 

He threw on his clothes.(23-1/3p) 

throw on 반대말은 throw off 

+) throw on one's coat 코트를 급히 입다

+) throw off one's coat 코트를 급히 벗다

 

Morgan's note had told him and Annie to come back to the magic tree house on Tuesday.(23-1/3p) 

Morgan's note had told ‘모건의 쪽지에 적혀 있었다’로 의역하지만 사물 주어로 쓰인 영어식 표현이에요. 한국말에는 없는 표현이라 어색하고 영작이 절대 안되는 부분이기도 해요. 그래도 한번 눈여겨 봐주세요. 

 

*bump into  (우연히) ~와 마주치다, ~에 부딪치다

Jack bumped into Annie.(23-1/4p) 

 

*get back 돌아오다, 되찾다

When we get back!(23-1/4p)  갔다와서 먹을게요! 

“Now get back in the boat,” said George Washington.(22-8/58p) 

 

*hope ~하면 좋겠다, ~하길바라(무언가를 바랄 때)

I hope we're not going to another war.(23-1/6p) 

다시 전쟁터에 가고 싶지 않은 바람을 얘기하는 것이니 여기서는 hope을 써야겠지요. wish와 hope 차이 기억나시쥬?

잭이 입고 있는 옷을 묘사하고 있어요. 한국말을 보고 영작해 보고 더보기를 열어 정답을 확인해 보세요

괄호 안에 주어진 단어를 이용해 배열해 보는 연습도 해 봅니다.

*on 표면에 붙어 위에 있는 것 

beneath와 on의 개념 한번 짚고 갑니다.

*open into/ onto something ~[다른 방·장소·지역으로] 쪽으로 통하다[이어지다]

The door seemed to open into the hill itself.(23-3/16p)  

Rooms opened onto the sunny courtyard.(16-3/22p) 

-open into/ onto 둘다 ~쪽으로 통하고 이어지는 뜻이에요.

그래서 문 자체가 언덕으로 통하는 것 같고, 방들이 안뜰 방향으로 (이어져) 향해 있다는 얘기예요.

-다른 부분은 made of 가 사용되었는데 여기만 made from으로 쓰였어요. 

학교 때 배웠던바로는 made from은 화학적으로 변화된 경우에 사용한다고 했는데요. 여기서 barrel 통 그자체를 desk로 쓰고 있어서 화학적으로 다른거 같지는 않아서 혼동되고 있습니다. 혹시 아신다면 설명 부탁드릴께요;;

이런 질문을 하면 원래 그런 거라며 원어민 친구들도 잘 설명을 못하더라고요. 영어식사고를 해야하는데 분석하고 있는, 나는야~ 뼈 속까지 한국인
