[매직문장] 15권-6 The Vikings Are Coming!

• It is better that the world should have some of it than none at all.
• When they reached the top, a fog had almost hidden the serpent ships.
• The fog blanketed the whole island.
• He pulled himself up the steep steps with his hands.

 

*scramble 재빨리 움직이다

She scrambled out of the tree house.(15-6/40p) 

Jack and Annie began scrambling up the rock.(15-9/64p)

1권부터 계속해서 나오는 단어 scramble,

다시한번더 새겨봅니다. 

 

*blanket 온통 덮다

The fog blanketed the whole island.(15-6/42p) 

-섬 전체가 안개로 뒤덮였다는 표현을 blanket을 써서 표현했어요. 날이 추워서 그런지 blanket란 단어에 꽂히네요.

 

*재귀대명사: 주어와 목적어가 같은 대상일 때 목적어 자리에 옵니다. 주어와 목적어를 강조하기 위해 쓰입니다. 

 

매직트리하우스에서 계속해서 비슷한 표현, 익숙한 문장들과 자주 마주치게 되어서 참 좋아요. 

At the top of the cliff, he pulled himself over the edge.(15-2/18p)

 Jack pulled himself up the steep steps with his hands.(15-6/42p)

 He pushed himself up and onto the ship's deck.(15-7/50p)

 

재귀대명사(오랜만에 써보는 말이에요)를 실제 대화상황에서 사용하기가 어려워요.

*make haste 서두르다

Make haste.(15-6/43p) 서둘러라

 

*better A than B  A가 낫다 B보다

+) It is better (to be) safe than sorry. 

    나중에 후회하는 것보다 미리 조심하는 편이 낫다. 

 

It is better <that the world should have some of it> than <none at all>.(15-6/44p)

 

better A than B  구조로 쓰여, 

A가 낫다 B보다는 뜻 이니까.

직역 - 세상이 조금이라도 갖는 게 낫다, 아예 없는거 보다는.

 

지금 바이킹이 섬으로 오고 있으니까, 혹시 바이킹의 침입으로 책이 완전히 없어지는 것보다는 세상에 조금이라도 남겨놓으려는 책의 저자로서 브라더 마이클의 마음이 담겨있어요. 완성된 책이 아니라 some of it 이라고 표현한 듯 싶어요.

 

*(just) in case 만일의 경우를 대비하여, ~하면 안되므로

*유용한 문장정리-간단하니 외웁시다

[매직문장] 15권-7 Fogbound

• They went one step at a time.
• It held her weight as she began inching along it.
• They seemed deserted as they bobbed in the shallow waves.

 

*fogbound (해사)안개에 갇힌, (배, 비행기가)짙은 안개로 항행 할 수 없는

 

*barely 가까스로, 겨우, 간신히

Jack and Ainne could barely see the path to the monastery.(15-6/42p) 

Jack could barely see the steep path leading down into the fog.(15-7/46p) 

She could barely lift it.(15-8/56p)  

 

barely, hardly, nearly... 등등의 부사 위치 문장 안에서 한번 확인해주세요. 

could barely, could hardly, could nearly …

 

*catch (못·문 등에 옷이) 걸리다

*get caught (순간적으로 뭔가에) 걸리다

My foot got caught in my stupid dress.(15-7/46p)  

+) My pants got caught on a nail. 내 바지가 못에 걸렸어.

+) My jacket got caught in the car. 내 재킷이 차 문에 걸렸어. 

 

*watch out for  ~을 경계(감시)하다, ~에 대해 주의하다

We've got to watch out for Vikings, too.(15-7/47p) 

And watch out for the Sabertooth.(7-9/62p) 

 

*one step/ at a time 한 번에 한 걸음씩[천천히, 점진적으로]

They went one step at a time.(15-7/47p)  

One at a time, please.(3-6/31p) 차례로, 하나씩

 

*creep 살금살금 움직이다

*crept closer/ crept away/ crept back 

Jack and Annie crept closer to the ships. (15-7/47p)  

They crept away from the three Viking ships.(15-7/48p)  

They crept back to where the ships were tied.(15-7/49p)  

 

*bob (물 위에서) 까닥거리다, 단발머리

- If something bobs, it moves up and down, like something does when it is floating on water.

9권 바다여행 했을 때도 나왔던 단어지요. 물 위에서 까닥거리는 장면으로 묘사해주려고 또 나와주셨습니다^^

 

...they bobbed in the shallow waves.(15-7/48p) 

The serpent prow bobbed up and down with waves.(15-7/50p)

It bobbed on the waves like a cork.(9-7/43p) 

 

bob하면 떠오르는 bob cat

*grow 비교급: 점점 더 ~ 해지다

The sound of the waves against the rocks grew louder.(15-7/47p) 

바위에 부딪히는 파도 소리가 점점 더 커졌다.

 

-위에서 보듯 waves 물결은 모두 복수형으로 쓰였어요. 

 

*pop out 튀어나오다, 갑자기 나타나다

Her head popped out of the water.(15-7/51p)  

 

*hand over hand 두 손을 번갈아, 손을 옮겨가며, 몇번이나[움직여서]

She kept going, hand over hand, along the rope, toward the ship.(15-7/51p)   

 

*inch 조금씩 움직이다

It held her wight as she began inching along it.(15-7/51p) 

Jack inched farther down the hill.(1-6/37p)

Jack inched down, bit by bit.(2-7/48p)

1권부터 계속 조금씩 움직이며 나오는 inch, 동사로 쓰이면 ‘조금씩 움직이다’

 

*slack 느슨한

Then the rope went slack, and the Viking ship slid out to sea.(15-7/52p)

• He was feeling braver himself.
• We'll sit on boxes across from each other.

 

*across from  (구어) ~의 바로 맞은편에

*pull off ~을 벗다 /  put on ~을 입다[신다, 걸치다]

*made feel 느끼게 하다

It made him feel a little different.

잭도 바이킹 모자를 쓰니 더 용감해 진 것 같다고 하죠. 전치사 on이 같이 쓰인 것 봐 주세요.

이렇게 영작은 못 할듯 싶어요;; 이 문장 열심히 중얼중얼 해 봅니다.

 

He didn't know how Annie could be braver than she already was.(15-8/58p) 

애니가 바이킹 모자(투구)를 쓰고는 더 용감해지는 것 같다고 하자, 잭은 ‘애니가 어떻게 전보다 더 용감해질 수 있을지 모르겠다'고 생각해요. 애니는 원래 용감했던 아이니까 그보다 어떻게 더 용감해질 수 있을까 싶은 게 잭의 생각이죠. 우리 애니가 얼마나 더 용감해질 수 있을까요? 오늘 챕터에서 나름 재미있는 문장이에요.

 

[매직문장] 15권-9  Sea Monster!

• The great serpent gave the ship one last push.
• The serpent's neck was as tall as a two-story building.

 

*as 원급형용사 as: (비교대상)만큼 ~ 한

The serpent's neck was as tall as a two-story building.(15-9/60p) 

The helmet wasn’t as heavy as the one he had worn in the time of castle.(15-8/57p)

이제는 너무 익숙한 as 형/부 as 구문

 

You can do it! 

Get us to shore before the ship sinks!(15-9/61p) 

용기를 내게 해주는 문구! 

 

“Hurry!” Annie called to the serpent monster.(15-9/61p)  

sea monster = serpent monster = Sarph

삽화의 주인공으로 모두 같은 분이십니다. 

 

*grow (감정,사건 따위가) (당연한 결과로서) 생기다, 일어나다

매직북마다 이제 안나오면 섭섭한 give a ~구문

 

*all of a sudden 갑자기, 불시에, 불쑥

all of a sudden, Annie gasped.(15-9/64p)

갑자기라는 표현이 참 다양하죠.

입에 익숙하게 중얼중얼 해 봅니다요.
