 매직트리하우스를 하루 한 챕터씩 소리내어 읽었던 주요 문장들을 머리 속에서 구체화시키는 작업입니다. 시간이 날 때마다 한번씩 열어서 읽어보는 연습을 해 봅니다. 좋은 영어문장, 기본적인 영어문장을 자꾸 소리내어 읽어서 익숙해져야 영어를 써야 하는 상황에서 그 표현을 쓸 수 있습니다.  매직낭독 스터디 회원들과 함께 만든 공동 영어노트를 보며 하루 영어공부를 마무리하는 시간을 가져보시기 바랍니다.

 

 

[줍줍매직문장] 20권-1 The Last Gift

• What'd I tell you?
• Teddy whined and scratched at a book lying in the corner.
• He knew the note by heart now.
• A faint bark came from the distance.
• A big smile crossed Jack’s face.
• A little black nose stuck out the window.

 

 테디의 마법을 풀어주기 위해 마지막 특별한 선물을 캥거루에게 받기 위해 간 곳은 오스트레일리아. 관목 우거진 숲에서 처음으로 만난 것은 코알라, 그리고 호주에만 서식한다는 emus, 당나귀울음소리와 비슷하다는 Kookaburra, 그리고, 캥거루를 만나요. 

 

간단하고 유용한 표현들이 많아요. 외웁시다~

*come to ~에 다다르다, ~에 이르다

지금까지 come to 엄청 많이 나왔어요. 

앞으로 come to보면 밑줄 쫙~ 쳐 봅니다. 

 

그래서 come to + an end가 만나면 

cf) come to an end 끝나다, 끝장나다, 종말을 고하다

+) All good things must comt to an end. 모든 좋은 일에는 끝이 찾아온다.

 

*smile crossed one's face 얼굴에 미소를 짓다

A big smile crossed Jack's face.(20-1/4p) 

 

cf) cross (표정이) 살짝 스치다

A look of horror crossed the man's kind face.(14-2/13p)

그녀의 얼굴에 짜증스런 표정이 스쳤다.

*by heart 외워서, 기억하여

+) learn by heart ...을 외다, 암기하다

+) I learned the poem by heart. 그 시를 외우고 있다.

[줍줍매직문장] 20권-2 Sleepyhead

• Australia's forests go through times of drought.
• They get moisture from the leaves they eat.
• The emus gave the little dog a haughty look.

• The creature was fast asleep.

 

*scrubby (나무가)잘 자라지 못한, 잡목이 우거진 

*droopy 축 늘어진, 의기소침한

The tree house had landed in a scrubby forest filled with droopy plants.(20-2/8p)

 

*scrawny 수척한 

They passed bushes and scrawny trees.(20-2/12p)

 

*sit back on one's heels 무릎을 꿇다

He sat back on his heels.(20-2/9p)

 

cf)get on one's knees 무릎으로 기다

‘무릎으로 기다’라는 표현도 여러번 나왔었죠. 한번 떠올려 봅니다. 

Jack threw down his pack and got on his knees.(11-4/20p) 

He got on his hands and knees.(6-3/16p)

 

*a wisp of smoke 한줌의 연기

A wisp of smoke floated above some trees in the distance.(20-2/9,10p)  

a wisp of smoke 한줌의 연기, 재미난 표현이에요. 

 

*sun-baked 햇볕에 말라 단단해진, 햇살이 쨍쨍 내리쬐는

They started walking across a sun-baked clearing.(20-2/12p)

 

*give a look 쳐다보다, ~를 보다

The emus gave the little dog a haughty look.(20-2/13p)

 

이제 너무 익숙한 구문, give a wave/ give a smile/ give a hug/ give a kiss 등등 여기저기서 많이 보시죠. 매직츄리에서도 진짜 많이 나왔었어요. 아래 문장 읽어보며 다시 떠올려봐요. 

 

Teddy tilted his head and gave Jack a wise look.(18-10/69p)

The seal hunter gave them a wave.(12-9/58p)

*'시속 얼마가다' 영어로 표현, 외웁시다!

It can run as fast as thirty miles per hour.(20-2/13p) 

시속 30마일(50 킬로미터)까지 달릴 수 있다. 

 

*speaking of …에 관해서 말한다면, …의 이야기라면 

Speaking of water, I'm thirty.(20-2/16p) 

물 얘기를 하니까, 목이 말라. 

다양하게 활용할 수 있는 구문, 여기저기 자주 나와요.

*cackle 꼬꼬댁거리다, (불쾌하게) 낄낄 웃다, 

-to laugh in a loud, unpleasant, and sometimes unkind way.

There was a loud, harsh cackle. 거칠게 꽥꽥거리다.(20-2/16p) 

The old woman cackled behind them.(13-2/20p) 

‘cackle’ 13권 폼페이에서 old woman=soothsayer를 표현할 때 나왔던 단어였죠.

*cackle 꼬꼬댁거리다, (불쾌하게) 낄낄 웃다

-to laugh in a loud, unpleasant, and sometimes unkind way.

The terrible cackle came again.(20-3/17p)

*keep one's eye(s) on sb …에서 눈을 떼지 않다, …을 경계하다

Jack kept his eye on Annie.(20-4/27p) 

 He munched the grass, keeping his big eyes on Annie.(20-4/33p) 

 

무릎꿇는 다양한 표현이 나와요.

*drop [fall on/ get down on/ go on] one's knees 무릎을 꿇다(빌다)

She dropped to her knees.(20-4/27p)

익숙한 표현 입에 촥 붙이게 한번 더 되뇌어 봅니다.

A wildfire is a fire that starts, usually by itself, in a wild area such as a forest, and spreads rapidly, causing great damage.

 

*at top speed 전속력으로, 힘껏

The emus raced by at top speed.(20-5/36p) 

 

-전속력이라 표현할 때는 at full speed, with all speed 라고 쓰는 걸로 알고 있었는데 full 대신 top도 쓰네요.

최고조에 이르는 그 지점을 콕 짚어서 전치사는 at이 쓰였어요. 

 

The fire was spreading quickly.(20-5/36p) 

생각만 해도 정말 마음 아픈 상황이에요. 

 

*sting 찌르다, 자극하다

Jack's eyes stung.(20-5/37p) 눈이 매웠다. 

My eyes sting!

 

매캐한 연기 속에 있을 때 ‘눈 매워’하고 쓸 수 있는 간단하고 유용한 표현.

 

*burn down (화재로) 소실되다. 태워버리다.

We have to get back to the tree house before it burns down.(20-5/37p)

 

*billow (연기,구름)이 피어오르다.

Smoke billowed everywhere.(20-5/37p)

 

*stream 줄줄[계속] 흐르다[흘러나오다]
