As LGBTQ visibility increases, so does the blacklash

 

*visibility 사회적 가시성, 대표성 

*backlash (사회 변화 등에 대한 대중의) 반발, 퇴보

*LGBTQ 성 소수자: lesbian(여성 동성애자), gay(남성 동성애자), bisexual(양성애자), transgender(성전환자), queer(성 소수자 전반) 혹은 questioning(성 정체성에 관해 갈등하는 사람)))

*gender-affirming (사회적, 의학적, 심리적으로 성 정체성을 더 확실히 하기 위해) 성별을 확증하는

*gender-affirming care 성전환 치료 (개인의 성 정체성과 일치하도록 돕는 의료 서비스)

*minor 미성년자 

*square 풀다, 해결하다; 해명하다, 설명하다, 일치시키다, 조화롭게 하다 =reconcile

So how do we square these two realities?

He says that LGBTQ history is filled with moments of progress and backlash. 

*uprising 봉기, 의거, 데모, 반란, 폭동 =rebellion

+) popular uprising 대중 폭동[봉기]

+) a student uprising 학생 폭동

*oppression 탄압, 억압, 박해

*from the sidelines 방관적 입장에서

*liberation 해방, 석방; 해방 운동

*take part (in something) (~에) 참여[참가]하다 (=participate)

*cynical 냉소적인, 부정적인(중요하거나 좋은 일은 일어나지 않는다고 보는), 자기 이익만 생각하는

*pander (저속한 욕망에) 영합하다, (남의 약점을) 이용하다, 뚜쟁이질을 하다, 뚜쟁이, 나쁜 일의 중개자

Another, it feels cynical, it feels pandering. 

+) The speech was pandering to racial prejudice. 

     그 연설은 인종적 편견을 이용하는 것이었다.

+) She spent her life pandering to the wants of her children. 

     그녀는 아이들이 원하는 것에 맞추느라 평생을 보냈다.

*authenticity [ˌɔːθenˈtɪsəti] 진짜임, 진정성, 정통성

*authentic 진본[진품]인, 진짜인, 정확한 

It feels like it takes the authenticity off of it. 

*marginal 미미한, 중요하지 않은 (=slight), 주변부의, 주변적인

*marginal group of people 사회의 주류로부터 소외되거나 차별받는 집단(예; 인종적 소수, 성적 소수), 장애인, 빈곤층, 여성 등)

*cozy up 친한 척하다, 친해지려고 하다. 다가가 친하게 굴다

Target wasn't cozying up.

+) You're here to cozy up to my boss.

     당신은 저의 상사와 친해지기 위해서 온 거잖아요.

*take the leap 앞장서다, 과감한 행동을 하다

In the earliest days, it was Subaru and American Airlines that took the leap to be sponsors, to be supportive. 

*market out 마케팅 활동 

There was a significant market out there of LGBTQ people to market to.

*pull back 후퇴하다[물러나다] (=withdraw), (하려던 일을) 취소하다

So when Target decided to pull back their Pride displays, they also had to deal with employees on the inside who would not be happy with that.

*float (시가행진 때 무대처럼 꾸민) 장식 차량[꽃수레]

*be set up 준비되다

*go a step too far 정도가 지나치다, 도를 넘다, 한계를 넘다, 용납할 수 없다

I think this has gone a step too far. 

*backsliding 이전의 나쁜 행실로 되돌아가기

*backslide (원래의 악습으로) 되돌아가다, 타락하다, 신앙을 버리다, 퇴보, 타락

*stick out to somebody ...의 눈에 띄다, 기억에 남다

*crystal clear 명명백백한, 아주 분명한, 수정같이 맑은

What are the 1 or 2 moments that really stick out to you, where it was just crystal clear in your mind, something's different here. 

*roll back 되돌리다, (가격 등을) 끌어내리다[낮추다]

*pedophile 소아성애자

The AIDS crisis as well, as painful as that was, and as much of a backlash that inspired at the time.

*outpour 뿜어내다, 흘러 나오다[나오게 하다], 유출하다[시키다], 유출(물)

And I remember that outpouring of emotion...

*slur 비방[중상](하는 말), (=insult), 헐뜯다, 비방하다, 깎아 내리다, 불분명하게 발음[말]하다, 혀꼬부라진 소리로 말하다

+) racial slur 인종차별적 비방

*call-in show 청취자 참여 프로그램

*serve as ~(로서)의 역할을 하다, 쓰이다, ..로 대신하다
