What is the new etiquette for tipping?

*two-tier wage system 이중임금제도

People don't understand this two-tier wage system.

*courtesy [ |kɜːrtəsi ] 예의상 하는 말이나 행동

Tipping is presented like an option or a courtesy.

In some cases, your tip is vital to the income of that worker.

*put something on something ~에게 부담을 주다, (돈·세금을) 덧붙이다[부과하다]

It puts way too much on the customer as far as knowing what people are getting paid in different jobs in different states.

*gratuity [ ɡrə|tuːəti ] 팁

*on top of something ~위에 더해지는

So tips in California are actual gratuity on top of the minimum wage.

So if you're not tipping somebody in Maryland, they're likely not getting up to the regular minimum wage.

Tipping in the U.S. has always seemed kind of mysterious to him, because where he grew up, tipping was not a thing.

You can always go old school and just tip in cash.

*preferred option 바람직한 선택권

Giving a cash is always the preferred option.

*err [er] 실수를 범하다

*on the side of …을 편들어, 가담하여

*err on the side of something ~에 대해 극도로 신경쓰다/조심하다, (안전 등을 기하기 위해) 지나치다 싶을 정도로 ~하다

It is good to err on the side of leaving something.

Your decision to tip should not be based on who is looking at you.

How to deal with unexpected tip requests

If a business you don't expect to ask for a tip is suddenly asking you for a tip, what should you do?

Beware of 'screen pressure'

When in doubt, ask

  • What is the minimum and subminimum wage in your state? If the subminimum wage is low, your tip will help the employee make a livable wage. If there is no subminimum wage, tips are actually gratuity.
  • Do you keep your whole tip? Some payment systems take a portion of the tip, so that may be a factor in how much you decide to leave behind.
  • How can I make sure you're getting my tip? Some businesses might not be tipping the person you think your money's going to.
