-this가 (명사)로  '이것'의 의미로도 쓰기 쉬운데 부사로의 활용은 은근 어려워요. 

this가 (부사) '이렇게, 이 정도로' 쓰이는 것도 꼭 기억해 봅니다. 

 

*would … 일 것이다(상상하는 일의 결과에 대해 말할 때 씀)

"I don't know. Remember, Morgan said this would be a very scary adventure," said Jack.(14-1/3p)

*instead of/ instead  ~ 대신에

*flow 흐름, 흐르다, (계속해서) 이어지다

*flowing (의복 등이 ) 미끈하게 처진, 흐르는 듯한

It showed a man wearing a rich, flowing robe with wide sleeves.(14-2/10p) 

flowing 그냥 흐르는 느낌이겠지 했는데, 미끈하게 처진의 의미로 옷 묘사에 많이 쓰이는 단어래요. 특히 실크묘사할 때 많이 쓰이겠죠.

*tend ~을 돌보다, 보살피다, (가축, 기계) 지키다, 망보다, 재배하다

-tend to '~ 경향이 있다'는 뜻으로만 알고 있었는데 여기서는 ‘돌보다’의 뜻으로 쓰였어요.

비슷한 표현으로는 Certainly, Definitely가 있고요.

실제 회화에서는 for sure가 더 많이 쓰입니다. 

 

오프라 윈프리(Oprah Winfrey)가 14년간 O매거진에 연재한 칼럼들을 모아 엮은  “What I know for sure”라는 책이 있어요. 한국말 번역으로는 “내가 확실히 아는 것들” 이고요. 에세이 형식이라 소설보다 단어도 어렵지 않고 쉽게 읽혀요. 매직북클럽 2월의 책이었어요. 시간되실 때 한번 살펴보세요. 

 

*for sure, 예문으로 더 살펴봅니다.

    부탁 하나 해도 될까? → 당연하지, 말해봐!

+) I can't say for sure. 꼭 된다는 보장은 할 수 없어.

+) When will I know for sure? 언제쯤 확실히 알 수 있을까요?

◈too ~ to 용법 중  <too busy to ~하기에는 너무 바쁜>를 예문으로 같이 살펴봅니다.

I was too busy working to notice the time. 일하느라고 시간 가는 줄 몰랐어요.

I’m too busy to find time to breath. 한숨 돌릴 틈도 없이 바빠요.

*loom 베틀, 직기

She pointed to an open porch where young woman was weaving cloth on a loom.(14-3/16p)

loom이 명사로는 ‘베틀, 직기’란 뜻이고,

-이 표현은 '잠수타다'할 때도 사용할 수 있어요.
