The North Korean forced labor program supplying seafood around the world

 

She has spent the past several years gutting fish at a plant in China. 

She was being made to work late into the night, getting sores in her mouth from exhaustion.

They are often in conditions of captivity.

*of one's own free will 자진하여, 자발적으로, 자유의지로

Do they leave North Korea and go to China of their own free will?

*vet (어떤 직책을 맡게 될 사람에 대해) 조사[심사]하다 

There's a lot of vetting on the North Korean side.

*defect (정당·국가 등을) 버리다[떠나다], 망명하다, 결함, 흠

You know, the wages that are on offer in China are an order of five to six times more than anything these women could earn in North Korea.

Oftentimes the women arrive and what they've been promised they don't receive.

*impose on 부과하다, 지우다

*ground 근거, 이유

These are sanctions that were imposed on grounds that the labor is forced,

*get around (곤란한 일·상황 등을) 피하다, (문제를 성공적으로) 해결[처리]하다 (=overcome)

How does China get around that?

They usually say the proof isn't solid, and we don't believe it's really happening.

*inroad 침투, 진출

Then some of them actually have inroads into North Korea.

*conspicuous 눈에 잘 띄는, 튀는; 뚜렷한

They're very conspicuous.

They have minders that are herding them into the store.

the women really opened up.

*coerce [ koʊˈɜːrs ] (협박하여) 강압하다[강제하다]

It sounds very difficult given the interview and reporting situation you were dealing with.

*gauge[ ɡeɪdʒ ] 판단하다[알아내다], 측정하다

Were you able to gauge their mental health?

+)He tried to gauge her mood. 

   그는 그녀의 기분을 알아내려고 애를 썼다.

*corroborate (진술·이론 등을 뒷받침하는 증거나 정보를) 제공하다, 확증[입증]하다 (=confirm)

We couldn't corroborate those.

Did you reach out to any American companies, the ones that were implicated in your reporting?

*have a stake in ~에 이해 관계가 있다

Americans have a stake in this.

North Korean workers is not allowed to come into the U.S.

Some of them very candidly engaged.

*to one's credit 칭찬받아 마땅하게도, 높이 평가 받아 마땅하게도, 다행히도

*sever [ˈsevə(r)]  (관계·연락을 완전히) 끊다[단절하다] (=break off), 자르다[절단하다], 잘라 내다 

*sever ties (외교) 관계를 단절하다 

Some companies, to their credit, severed ties to the plants immediately when we contacted them.

+)I severed all ties with that gossipful friend. 

   그 험담하기 좋아하는 친구와는 인연을 끊었다.
