Got tipping rage? This barista reveals what it's like to be behind the tip screen

 

The rise of so-called tipflation has consumers fuming.

People are pushing back against the social pressure of tipping.
He got his first job as a barista in 2010. It was just a way to make rent.
So passionate that 10 years later, he is still working there.
I've become kind of a nerd about it.

Here's where we get to this moment we're having in tipping.
With inflation happening across the economy, businesses are dealing with rising costs.
There's a lot of pressure to keep prices low for frugal customers.
*volatile [ˈvɑːlətl] 변덕스러운, (금방이라도 급변할 듯이) 불안한 (=unstable)
Tip is volatile that totally relies on the whims and moods of customers.
 Tipping is presented as a choice, a thank-you for great service.
*baked in 내장/장착되어 있는, 이미 안에 포함되어 있는
*as a baked-in part of workers pay 급여의 부분으로 포함되어 있는 것으로서
it is already baked in the cake = it is no use crying over spilt water.
*wrap one's head around (힘들고 어렵지만) 이해하다. 이해하고 받아들일 방법을 찾다
I cannot even wrap my head around the idea of even just making 30- or $40,000 a year.

Roughly half of Schenker's customers tip, which is in line with the national average.

 The rise in tipping has many customers fuming, but one worker who depends on tips says most customers misunderstand what they are — and shares what it feels like when people don't tip.
