Every challenge we take on has the power to knock us to our knees. But what's even more disconcerting than the jolt itself is our fear that we won't withstand it.(35p) They come with being alive. Don't fight them. Let them help you adjust your footing.(35p)

우리와 마주하는 모든 고난은 우리를 무릎 꿇게 하는 힘이 있다. 하지만 충격 그 자체보다 우리를 훨씬 더 당황스럽게 하는 것은 그것을 견뎌내지 못할 것이라는 두려움이다. 그것은 살아있으면 겪을 수밖에 없는 일이다. 저항하지 말고, 그 경험이 자신의 위치를 조정하게 하자.

What I learned for sure was that holding the shame was the greatest burden of all. When you have nothing to be ashamed of, when you know who you are and what you stand for, you stand in wisdom.

누구나 떠올리기 싫고 혼자만의 비밀로 숨겨둔 과거가 있을 것이다. 

14살 나이에 임신과 출산이라는 큰 일을 겪고 혼자만의 비밀로 오랜 시간 간직하고 있었던 그녀, 

수치스러운 과거는 지울 수 없지만 이제 그 부끄러움을 그만 잡고 있어야 한다는 것.

I know for sure that when you remove the fear, the answer you've been searching for comes into focus. And as you walk into what you fear, you should know for sure that your deepest struggle can, if you're willing and open, prodce your greatest strength.(39p)

두려움을 제거하면 이제껏 찾아헤매왔던 그 해답이 뚜렷히 보인다는 걸 확실히 알고 있다.

No matter what challenge you may be facing, you must remember that while the canvas of your life is painted with daily experiences, behaviors, reactions, and emotions, you're the one controlling the brush. If I had known this at 21, I could have saved myself a lot of heartache and self-doubt.(41p)

내가 지금 알고 있는 것을 그때도 알았더라면, 나의 길을 의심하는데 단 1분이라도 낭비하지 않았으리라. 

어떤 역경에 직면할지라도, 삶이라는 캔버스에 일상적인 경험, 행동, 반응, 감정으로 채워지고, 그 붓을 컨트롤하는 것은 우리 자신이라는 사실을 기억하자.만약 스물한 살에 이것을 알았더라면, 가슴앓이하고, 자기 의심하는 시간을 아낄 수 있었을 것이다.

 

Wherever you are in your journey, I hope you, too, will keep encounting challenges. It is a blessing to be able to survive them, to be able to keep putting one foot in front of the other-to be in a position to make the climb up life's mountain, knowing that the summit still lies ahead. And every experience is a valuable teacher.
