매직북클럽 Wonder 영어원서 Day 20-1/27(금)

매직북클럽과 함께 한 2023년 1월의 책 Wonder를 마무리하는 날입니다. 

★한달에 영어원서 한 권 읽기 1월의 책 Wonder Day20 (298-End)

*cusp 끝, 사이

*marvelous 훌륭한, 우수한, 놀라운, 믿기 어려운, 신기한, 기묘한, 기적적인, 초자연적인<

*glimmer (희미하게) 깜박이다[빛나다]

It glimmered in their kindness. Such a simple thing. A nice word of encouragement given when needed. An act of friendship. A passing smile.(300p)

 

*impart (정보·지식 등을) 전하다 (=convey), (특정한 특성을) 주다 (=lend)

Children, what I want to impart toyou today is an understanding of the value of that simple thing called kindness.(301p)

*infamous 악명 높은, 오명이 난 (→famous), (=notorious)

*verbosity [və:rbɑ́səti] 다변, 수다; 용장, 장황

+) Gentleman should not be overtaken by his own verbosity.  
    신사는 자고로 말을 많이 하지 않아야한다.
+) She’ s just spent two hours telling us all about her future plans with her usual verbosity. 
    그녀는 우리에게 자신의 미래 계획에 대해 늘 그렇듯이 장황하게 이야기해 주느라 두 시간을 보냈다.

 

"... but what I want you, my students, to take away from your middle-school experience," he continued, "is the sure knowledge that, in the future you make for yourselves, anything is possible. Is every single person in this room made it a little knider than is necessary-the world really would be a better place. And if you do this, if youact just a little kinder than is necessarym in every single one of you, the face of God."(301p)

 

*zone out 멍 때리다, 잠이 들다, 의식을 잃다

I liked Mr. Tushman's speech, but I have to admit: I kind of zoned out a little during some of the other speeches.(302p)

so I knid of zoned out a bit again.(303p)

I tuned in again as Ms. Rubin started reading off the names of the kids who'd made the High Honor Roll because we were supposed to stand up when our names were called.(302p)

*ruminate [ˈruːmɪneɪt]  심사숙고하다, 곰곰이 생각하다 (=ponder)

I came upon a passage that he wrote that seemed particularly consistent with the themes I touched on earlier,themes I've been ruminating upon all year long.(303p)

+) We need to co-ruminate on the issue of racial discrimination.  
    우리는 인종차별 문제에 대해서 함께 고민할 필요가 있습니다.
+) We need to think over[meditate on; ruminate on] the lesson we learned from that experience.  
    그 사건이 남긴 교훈을 되새겨 보아야 한다

 

"Greatness,' wrote Beecher, 'lies not in being strong, but in the right using of strength... He is the greatest whose strength carries up the most hearts..."

"'He is the greatest,'" "'whose strength carries up the most hearts by the attraction of his own.' Without further ado, this year I am very proud to award the Hernry Ward Beecher medal to the student whose quiet strength has carried up the most hearts.

     자, 그럼 지금 바로 시작합니다.

 

*Way to go! = Well done! = You did a good job! = You did well! 잘 했어!

 

*leaf 책장[페이질]을 넘기다, (특히 책의) 낱장, 페이지

*leaf through 책장을 빨리 넘기다

He put his reading glasses on again, leafen through a book, and started to read.(304p)

I felt like I was floating.(305p)

 

"For everything you've given us," 

"For coming into our lives. For being you."

"You really are a wonder, Auggie. You are a wonder."

 

마지막 장에서 조금 떨어져 걷고있지만 엄마의 행복한 모습을 발견하고는 엄마에게 다가가는 Auggie, 학교에 보내줘서 고맙다고 말하는 Auggie를 보며 학교에 처음 견학한 날부터 시작해서 각각의 장면들이 떠오릅니다. 

 

작고 여린 Auggie가 세상을 향해 나아가 도전하는 모습이 안쓰럽고 아렸던 마음... 반성도 하고 위로받습니다. 교장선생님(Mr. Tushman)의 졸업 연설이 정말 감동적이었어요. Auggie가 좋은 교장선생님과 친구들을 만나게 되어 얼마나 감사한지요. 무엇보다 사랑이 많은 가정이었기에 그런 어려움을 헤쳐나갈 수 있지 않았나 싶어요. 

자식을 키우는 엄마 마음으로 보니, 더 대견하고 함께 성장한 친구들까지 한 명 한 명 모두 안아주고 싶어요. 

 

눈물이 주르륵... 정말 모처럼 책 읽으며 눈물이 났어요.

Auggie 엄마의 말씀처럼 세상에는 좋은 사람들이 더 많다는 것,

좋은 사람들은 또 좋은 사람을 알아본다고 믿어요.

아름다운 아이 Wonder, 마음 속에 오래오래 기억될 거에요.

 

감동이 있는 Wonder와 이제 헤어져야 할 시간입니다.

모처럼 마음 따뜻한 책을 영어원서로 읽어보고 감동이 더합니다.
