[매직문장] 18권-1 Teddy’s Back!

• Teddy's barking brought Jack back from his memories.
• The sooner we free Teddy, the better. 
• “We’ll be right back,” said Jack. 
• But I bet that book will take us there.

 

*run into 뛰어 들어가다, 맞닥뜨리다, ~와 우연히 만나다

Just then, Annie ran into Jack’s room.(18-1/3p) 

Annie ran into the Frog Creek woods.(6-1/3p) 

 

-주로 애니가 이렇게 뛰어 들어가요. 

매직트리하우스를 읽다보면 잭과 애니를 표현하는 부분이 반복되어 나오곤 하는데 그걸 찾아보는 것도 재미있습니다. 

 

-run into 예문으로 더 살펴보아요. 

+) Let me know if you run into any problems. 무슨 문제가 있으면 제게 알려주세요.

+) Be careful not to run into debt. 빚을 지게 되지 않도록 조심해라.

    우리는 운 나쁘게도 격렬한 폭풍을 만났다. 

 

-엄마들에게 외워두면 좋은 유용한 생활영어 표현-

*you two 두 사람을 지칭할 때

Where are you two going?(18-1/5p) 너네 둘 어디가니?

여러명이 나갈 때는 Where are you all going? 

 

*be ready soon 곧 준비가 되다, 금방되다

Breakfast will be ready soon.(18-1/5p)

 

*any minute 곧

*slip 빠져나가다, 미끄러지다, (작은) 실수, 쪽지

*slip out  슬그머니[알아채지 않게] 나오다

Jack and Annie slipped out the front door.(18-1/5p)

Then they slipped out the door into the chilly, damp night.(17-1/6p)

 

-남매가 슬그머니, 알아채지 못하게 들어오고 나가고 합니다.

매 권 마다 나오는 slip out, 이번에는 슬그머니 말고 대놓고 기억해 봅시다. 

 

*rattle 달가닥거리다

바람이 나뭇잎을 흔들 때 rattle, 방울뱀은 rattlesnake

*swoop (특히 공격을 하기 위해) 급강하하다, 급습하다

Birds swooped from branch to branch.(18-1/6p)

Then she swooped down to the ocean.(4-2/12p):  she=앵무새 Polly 

-매직트리하우스에서 swoop은 주로 새가 날아가는 모습을 표현할 때 쓰고 있어요.

 

‘급습하다’의 의미 예문으로 살펴봅니다. 

+) A swoop by customs officers netted a large quantity of drugs.

  세관 직원들이 급습하여 많은 양의 마약을 압수했다.

 

+) Large quantities of drugs were found during a police swoop on the star’s New York home.

  그 스타의 뉴욕 집에 대한 경찰 급습 중에 많은 양의 마약이 발견되었다.

 

*no sign of  ~의 흔적[징조/기색]이 없는

*There is ~가 있다

타이타닉호가 침몰한 바로 그 시간  2:20, 생각하면 너무 마음이 아픕니다.

*bring something back ~을 기억나게 하다[상기시키다]

*bring someone back from one's memories 생각에 잠겨있다가 정신차릴 때

*slant 기울어지다, 비스듬히하다

*have on 입다 wear, put on

-17권에서 꼭대기만 눈으로 하얗게 덮인 빙산의 느낌, 

15권에서 브라더 패트릭 머리 표현을 a fringe of 로 표현했어요, 기억나시쥬~

 

바람이 이렇게 불면 좋겠어요.

*grow 비교급: 점점 더 ~ 해지다

The sky was growing bluer as they watched.(18-2/11p)

When he stepped onto the ground, the grass came all the way up to his chest. It tickled his nose.(18-2/13p)

-저는 이 문장보고 예전 중부 옥수수밭에 살던 시절이 떠올랐어요. 가도가도 끝이 없는 옥수수밭, 지평선을 볼 수 있는 곳이에요. 잭의 심정이 이해되었다는요.

It tickled his nose. 문장을 보니 재채기가 나오려고 해요. 

“Ah-ah-CHOO!” he sneezed. 결국 잭도 재채기를 해요. 

 

*All 단어 하나로 강조를 해줍니다.

All he could see was rolling waves of grass.(18-2/13p)-all he could see 그가 볼 수 있는 모든 것 

All he could do was hold on tight as the horse galloped beside the Olympic racers.(16-9/54p) -all he could do 그가 할 수 있는 모든 것

 

All he saw was blue sky.(16-9/55p) - all he saw  그가 보는 모든 것

All they could see was snow and rocks and their own footprints.(7-3/22p)-all he could see 그가 볼 수 있는 모든 것

 

*anything 무엇이든

*but 전치사로 ~외에, ~빼고, ~제외하고 except

*anything but ~빼고 무엇이든, …이 결코 아닌

We could walk for monthes and never see anything but grass.(18-2/13p) 

1) anything but A : A 빼고 (but) 무엇이든 (anything), A는 결코 아닌

+) I can tell you anything but this. 난 이것만 빼고 무엇이든 너에게 말해 줄 수 있어.

+) She can do anything but sing. 그녀는 노래하는 거 빼고 무엇이든 할 수 있다. 

 -결국 A만 빼고 무엇이든 다 된다는 말은 A는 절대, 결코 아니라는 말이죠. 

다시말해, ‘A는 결코 아닌’의 뜻이 됩니다. 

 

2) anything but + 형용사: …이 결코 아닌

+) That’s anything but true. 그건 절대 진실이 아니다.

+) Life is anything but easy. 삶은 결코 쉽지 않다.

+) He looked anything but happy. 그는 결코 행복해 보이지 않았다. 

 

-비슷해서 헷갈리는 단어 

*farther <물리적 거리> 더 멀리

-)far-farther-farthest 

 

*further <시간 정도 거리 수량> 더 멀리에, 더 나아가, 게다가

-)far-further-furthest

 

+) I can go no farther/further. 나는 더 이상 갈 수가 없다.

+) The issue needs further examination. 그 사안은 더 많은 검토가 필요하다.

 

farther는  <물리적 거리>에만 사용되고, 

further가  <시간 정도 거리 수량>를 나타내어 더 많이 사용됩니다요.

아메리칸 인디언, 백인의 침략...

테디를 위한 special thing을 위해 푸른 초원에서의 선물은 무엇일까요.

18권의 내용이 그리 즐겁지만은 않을 것 같은 예감이 들어요. 

I have a bad feeling about this. 

 

*have a feeling ~한 예감이 들다, ...한 느낌을 갖다

He had a feeling Annie was right.(17-1/5p) 

I have a feeling that the two of you were our good luck tonight.(17-7/50p) 

I have a feeling we should check the woods again.(10-1/1p) 

I have a feeling that the full moon might help us.(8-1/4p)

 

*have a bad feeling 예감이 안좋다, 불길한 기분이 들다

I have a bad feeling about this. 

- bad만 붙여서 간단히 응용가능, 쉽쥬~ 

 

*break out 발발하다, 발생하다

Fighting broke out between Lakota warriors and white soldiers.(18-3/18p)

+) Before COVID-19 broke out, my family and I traveled overseas at least once a year. 

   코로나19가 발생하기 이전에는 적어도 일 년에 한 번 이상은 가족과 함께 해외여행을 갔었다. 

 

*be defeated 지다

By the end of the 1800s, the Lakota were defeated.(18-3/18p) 

They lost both their land and their old way of life.(18-3/18p)

라코다족이 백인 개척자와의 싸움에서 지면서 땅도 잃고,

old way of life를 잃어버린 건 더 슬프게 다가옵니다. 

 

- 나이 표현하기-

*more than …이상(의), …보다 많이

*look 보이다, 보다

He couldn't have been more than ten or eleven.(18-3/19p)

He looked about four years old.(17-5/37p) 네 살쯤 되어 보였다.

 

 *look to be ~인 것 같다

She looked to be about twelve or thirteen years old.(17-5/38p)

그녀는 열두 살이나 열세 살 인 것 같았다.

 

*catch up with (대상, 누군가를) 따라잡다, 따라가다

-to go faster so that you reach the person or vehicle in front of you 

Jack caught up with Annie.(6-1/3p) 

He ran to catch up with Annie.(6-3/22p) 

They caught up wihte Black Hawk and Annie, and together they all rode through the tall grass.(18-5/35p) 

 

+)catch up on (밀린 일, 뒤떨어진 일을) 따라잡다, 만회하다

I have a lot of work to catch up on. 일이 많이 밀렸다 (밀린 일이 많다).

잭한테 전수받았는지 애니도 한 정리합니다. 

It’s good manners to be quiet. And we should give gifts and not show fear.

*모든 시선이 쏠릴때 all eyes were turned to…

라코타족 사람들의 모든 시선이 무섭기도 했을 듯요.

Jack quickly held up two fingers. Annie did the same.(18-3/23p)

*holding up two fingers는 한 손을 들고 두 손가락 붙여드는 모습이요. 64p 그림에서 확실히 볼 수 있어요. 

재빠르게 대처하는 잭이랑 애니, 넘 귀엽쥬~

그림에 잭은 손바닥을 들어 보이는 것 같고, 애니가 제대로 holding up two fingers한 것 같아 보여요.

[매직문장] 18권-4 Good Manners

*tell 판단하다

*couldn't tell/ could tell 그래보였다, 알 수 있었다

Jack couldn't tell what anyone was thinking. 

Jack could tell she was wise. 

잭은 누가 무슨 생각을 하는지 알 수 없었다. 
잭은 그녀가 현명하다는 것을 알아챘다. 

 

+) Adam could tell by Sarah's smile that she enjoyed the concert. 

잭은 세라의 미소를 보고 그녀가 콘서트를 즐겼다는 걸 알아챘다. 

 

그냥 딱 보면 알아." -- 영어로 말하기 [ 영어회화 ] (6분 39초)

+) I can tell.

그래 보여, 그래 보인다, 그런 것 같아. 

-상대방이 말한 걸 나도 알겠다는 의미로 사용 

 

A:  I've lost my weight. 나 몸무게 줄었어. 

B: I can tell. 그래 보여. 

 

+) I can tell just by looking at it. 딱 보면 알아. 

+) I can tell you feel better today. 

   너 오늘은 좀 나아 보이네. 

 

Jack wondered how to appear brave.

잭은 용감하게 보일 방법을 궁리했다.

*tall 의기양양하게, 과장하여

*walk tall 자부심을 느끼다, 뻐기다, 스스로 긍지를 갖다

walk tall에서 tall이 형용사로 쓰였는데 walk tall이 ‘자부심을 느끼다’ 뜻도 있어요. 이렇게 walk 이나 tall 처럼 본래 잘 알려진 뜻 말고 다르게 나오면 당황스러워요. 

 

She walked tall and straight.

Her chin was up. 

Jack straightened his shoulders. He lifted his chin, and he felt braver.(18-4/24p) 

자세만 바로해도 기분이 달라지죠.

두렵지 않은 척 애쓰는 아이들 모습이 귀엽게 느껴져요. 

 

*remind of ..을 생각나게 하다, 연상시키다

Grandmother's laughter and kind face reminded Jack of his own grandmother.(18-4/26p)

That reminds me of the seal hunter in the Arctic.(18-4/30p)

The mysterious writing reminded Jack of the writing from their trip to the Roman town of Pompeii.(15-1/6p)

자주 나오는 구문, remind of 해봅니다. 

 

*carve 조각하다, 깎아서 만들다, 새기다

은근 자주 나오는 단어 중 하나 carve, 마음 속에 새겨봅니다.
