1. 여럿 중 하나 혹은 소수를 제외시킬 때

토드랑 스테이시 빼고는 다 답장을 받았어.

I got a reply from everyone except (for)Todd and Stacey.

 

난 콩국수 빼고 다 먹어. 

I like(eat) everything except (for) bean noodles.

 

2. 어떤 주장이 전적으로 사실이 아니게 하는 예외적인 것을 제외시켜 말할 때

네 에세이는 철자 오류 몇 개만 빼면 완벽해.

Your essay looks perfect except for a few spelling errors.

 

거기는 담배빼고는 다 팔아. 

They sell eveything except(for) cigarettes.

 

◈except vs. except for 뉘앙스 차이 

except: 단호하게 말하는 느낌- 담배가 제외된 것이 의도적

except for: 단순히 제외된 느낌

결론 → 크게 구분없이 사용함

 

3. 두 번째 유형과 같지만 except that +문장

나는 내가 지금 사는 곳이 직장하고 조금 먼 것만 빼고는 아주 만족스러워.

I'm really happy with where I live now except that it's a little far from where I work.

 

의자들이 조금 불편한 것 빼고는 아주 좋은 커피숍이에요. 

It's a really nice coffee shop except that the chairs are a little uncomfortable.
