[매직문장] 15권-6 The Vikings Are Coming!

• It is better that the world should have some of it than none at all.

• She yanked the bell rope.
• They’re headed straight for the island!

 

*scramble 재빨리 움직이다

She scrambled out of the tree house.(15-6/40p) 

Jack and Annie began scrambling up the rock.(15-9/64p)

Jack scrambled to his feet.(12-7/48p) 

The wildebeests were scrambling safely over the riverbank.(11-5/27p)

He and Annie scrambled for the hatch.(9-2/18p)

Jack scrambled into the tree house.(1-9/59p)

-1권부터 계속해서 나오는 단어 scramble,

다시한번더 새겨봅니다. 

 

*blanket 온통 덮다

The fog blanketed the whole island.(15-6/42p) 

-섬 전체가 안개로 뒤덮였다는 표현을 blanket을 써서 표현했어요.

blanket이 명사로만 주로 알고 있었는데, 동사로써 쓰임을 배워봅니다. 

이불처럼 안개가 섬을 감싸고 뒤덮어 준 그림을 떠올리면 좋을 듯 해요. 

 

▶재귀대명사: 주어와 목적어가 같은 대상일 때 목적어 자리에 옵니다.

주어와 목적어를 강조하기 위해 쓰입니다.

매직트리하우스에서 계속해서 비슷한 표현, 익숙한 문장들과 자주 마주치게 되어서 참 좋아요.

재귀대명사(오랜만에 써보는 말이에요)를 실제 대화상황에서 사용하기가 어려워요.

*make haste 서두르다

Make haste.(15-6/43p) 서둘러라

 

*better A than B  A가 낫다 B보다

+) It is better (to be) safe than sorry. 

    나중에 후회하는 것보다 미리 조심하는 편이 낫다. 

 

It is better <that the world should have some of it> than <none at all>.(15-6/44p)

 

better A than B  구조로 쓰여, 

A가 낫다 B보다는 뜻 이니까.

직역 - 세상이 조금이라도 갖는 게 낫다, 아예 없는거 보다는.

 

지금 바이킹이 섬으로 오고 있으니까, 혹시 바이킹의 침입으로 책이 완전히 없어지는 것보다는 세상에 조금이라도 남겨놓으려는 책의 저자로서 브라더 마이클의 마음이 담겨있어요. 완성된 책이 아니라 some of it 이라고 표현한 듯 싶어요.

 

*(just) in case 만일의 경우를 대비하여, ~하면 안되므로

[매직문장] 15권-7 Fogbound

• They went one step at a time.
• Jack waded through the shallow water.
• They seemed deserted as they bobbed in the shallow waves.
• The fog and the movement of the ship made Jack feel as if he was in a dream.

 

*fogbound (해사)안개에 갇힌, (배, 비행기가)짙은 안개로 항행 할 수 없는

 

*barely 가까스로, 겨우, 간신히

Jack and Ainne could barely see the path to the monastery.(15-6/42p) 

Jack could barely see the steep path leading down into the fog.(15-7/46p) 

She could barely lift it.(15-8/56p)  

 

barely, hardly, nearly... 등등의 부사 위치 문장 안에서 한번 확인해주세요. 

could barely, could hardly, could nearly …

 

*catch (못·문 등에 옷이) 걸리다

*get caught (순간적으로 뭔가에) 걸리다

My foot got caught in my stupid dress.(15-7/46p)  

+) My pants got caught on a nail. 내 바지가 못에 걸렸어.

+) My jacket got caught in the car. 내 재킷이 차 문에 걸렸어. 

 

*watch out for  ~을 경계(감시)하다, ~에 대해 주의하다

We've got to watch out for Vikings, too.(15-7/47p) 

And watch out for the Sabertooth.(7-9/62p) 

 

*one step at a time/ one at a time 한 번에 한 걸음씩[천천히, 점진적으로]

- If something bobs, it moves up and down, like something does when it is floating on water.

9권 바다여행 했을 때도 나왔던 단어지요. 물 위에서 까닥거리는 장면으로 묘사해주려고 또 나와주셨습니다^^

*could be <비교급> than: 더 <비교급> 할 수도 있다

He didn't know how Annie could be braver than she already was.(15-8/58p) 

애니가 바이킹 모자(투구)를 쓰고는 더 용감해지는 것 같다고 하자, 잭은 ‘애니가 어떻게 전보다 더 용감해질 수 있을지 모르겠다'고 생각해요. 애니는 원래 용감했던 아이니까 그보다 어떻게 더 용감해질 수 있을까 싶은 게 잭의 생각이죠. 우리 애니가 얼마나 더 용감해질 수 있을까요? 오늘 챕터에서 나름 재미있는 문장이에요.

*as 형용사 as: (비교대상)만큼 ~ 한

The serpent's neck was as tall as a two-story building.(15-9/60p) 

The helmet wasn’t as heavy as the one he had worn in the time of castle.(15-8/57p)

It was as hard as stone.(14-8/47p)

She was twice as tall as Jack.(12-7/49p) 

Maybe she's as nuts as you.(11-7/41p)
