• In old Japan, Peanut had helped them when they'd gotten lost.
• First we have to find a clue that tells us where to begin.

-피넛을 고개를 돌려 애니랑 잭을 번갈아 보는 모습이 너무 귀여워요. 

 

*영어도치

-일반적으로 영어 문장은 <주어+동사>의 어순을 취합니다.

하지만 <주어+동사> 앞에 다른 성분이 오면서 간혹 주어와 동사의 어순이 바뀔수가 있는데, 이와같은 현상을 도치라고 합니다. 영어도치의 목적은 ‘강조’에 있습니다. 우리말에도 도치법이 있듯 영어도 똑같이 있습니다. 

 

▶장소를 나타내는 부사구에서 영어도치: 부사구+동사+주어

In the shadows was an open book.(6-1/6p)

*close together 밀집하다, 친밀하다

-close together 보니 촘촘하게 모여있는 모습이 상상됩니다.

    그 지역은 아파트가 밀집해 있다.

    계속 꼭 같이 붙어있어. 아무도 길을 잃으면 안 되니까.

우리에게 익숙한 that’s why 구문 살펴봅니다.

*just as 꼭... 처럼

Just as in the book.(6-3/12p) 책이랑 똑같다

*stick out (of something)  (~에서) (툭) 튀어나오다, ~을 내밀다, 밖으로 빠져나오다

She stuck one leg out the window.(6-3/13p)

*열대우림 설명

The rain forest is in three layers.

Thick treetops, often over 150 feet in the air, make up the top layer.

This is called the forest canopy.

Below the canopy is the under-story, then the forest floor.

 

-150피트는 4572cm예요. 45미터 위에서, 그 높은 곳에서 애니가 떨어질 뻔 했다는 얘기예요.

*get on one's knees (무릎으로) 기다

-뒤에 또 나오는 구문이예요. 

 

-’무릎을 꿇다’ 동사 kneel 하나로 말할 수 있지만 원어민들은 이런 표현을 더 많이 씁니다. 복습해 봅시다요.

* spooky 으스스한, 귀신이 나올 것 같은

-strange and frightening

잭이 한번도 보지 못했던 음산한 곳이라고 해요. 

중세 성의 지하감옥이나 미라가 있던 피라미드보다도 더 오싹했나봐요. 

 

비슷한 표현, 챕터 2에서 나왔던  creepy/ scary 도 복습해 봅니다.

*blend 혼합, 섞다

*blend  in with ~와 조화를 이루다

-blend하면 커피 생각나죠.

커피원두 한가지 말고 두 가지 이상 섞게 되면 무슨무슨 블랜드 커피하고 이름을 붙여요. 

 

-한국인이 틀리는 영어발음 중 하나 creature입니다.

 *tons of = a ton of  엄청많은, 다수의, 수없이 많은/ millions of 수백만의

Army ants- millions and millions of them-were marching over the leaves!(6-4/24p)

They had treasure at home. A ton of it. Everywhere.(4-10/67p)  

-많다라는 표현으로 수와 양(many: 수)/ much: 양)을 고려하지 않아도 되니 보통은 a lot of를 쓰라 합니다.여기에  westerner들은 과장된 표현을 좋아합니다. 예전에 아이들 어렸을 때 플레잇데이트 하면 미국엄마들은 자기 간식 많이 가져있다고  tons of ㅇㅇ하는 얘기 자주 들었어요.

 

▶a ton of와 tons of의 차이

'엄청많은, 수많은'으로 둘다 같은 뜻입니다. a lot of = lots of 처럼요.

a ton of는 가산명사(셀 수 있는 명사)와 함께 단수와 복수를 구별하여 사용. 격식있는 표현

tons of는 불가산명사(셀 수 없는 명사)와 함께 사용. 격식없고 캐주얼한 표현

그러나 대부분 원어민들은 규칙없이 편한대로 사용합니다. 

 

+) I have a ton of work to do.

     나 할 일이 산더미야. 

+) He made tons of money in stocks. 

     그는 주식으로 엄청난 돈을 벌었다. 

+) The influencer has tons of followers. 

     그 인플루언서는 많은 팔로워가 있다. 

 

*peek = peep 엿보다, 살짝[훔쳐]보다

She was peeking out of the tree house window.(6-3/12p)

Peanut was peeking out of Annie’s pocket.(6-3/12p)

Jack peeked out of the tree house, too.(6-3/12p)

He peeked out at the giant monster.(1-8/48p)

 

-peek이랑 peep는 끝이 무성음(발음할 때 목청이 떨리지 않음)으로 ‘k 크/ p프’ 하고 빨리 발음되지요.

그러니까 얼른 엿보고, 살짝보고, 훔쳐보고~ 그렇게 기억해 볼까요?

 

*peer 자세히 들여다보다, 응시하다, 주의해서 보다

She and Jack peered around at the quiet forest.(6-4/20p)

He peered over the edge of the bridge.(2-4/24p)

He peered into the darkness.(2-4/26p)

Look!" said Annie, peering through the mist.(2-3/19p)

Jack peered down at the valley.(1-8/48p)

She was peering out the tree house window.(1-2/6p)

-peer의 r은 유성음(목청이 떨림)으로 ‘r 러’로 좀더 길게 발음되니 자세히 보고, 응시하는 걸로 기억해 봅시다요. 

 

1권부터 계속해서 나오는 단어들이라 익숙하죠.

그런데 비슷하게 생긴 단어인데다 뜻도 엇비슷해서 가끔 헷갈려요.

 

Jack felt unseen eyes watching them.(6-4/20p)

-생각만해도 정말 으시시해져요. 

 

*get 비교급/ grow 비교급: 점점 더 ~해지다

But the sound got louder.(6-4/21p)

The weird noise grew louder and louder.(6-4/21p)

Jack saw the sky had grown even darker with clouds.(4-7/43p)

It was getting harder to breathe. And harder to stay calm.(3-9/52p) 

Did the mummy's face grow calmer?(3-8/47p) 

The wind got louder and louder.(2-9/61p)

The light got dimmer and dimmer.(2-7/46p)

It was getting darker.(2-4/24p)

 

-grow가 become의 뜻으로 사용되었어요.

매직작가님은 become보다는 get 이나 grow로 쓰는 걸 좋아하시는 듯 해요.

*push one's way 밀치고 나아가다
