[매직문장] 7권-1 The "M" Things

• Only one book lay open in the corner.
• He gave up on the idea of changing out of his bathing suit.
• Sorry we didn't come sooner.
• They looked at the page the book was opened to.
• The warm air smelled fresh and green.

*change out of something …을 갈아[바꿔]입다

-to take off the clothes you are wearing and put on different ones.

I want to go home and change out of my bathing suit.(7-1/5p)  

 

*give up 포기하다

*give up on …을 단념하다

He gave up on the idea of changing out of his bathing suit.(7-1/6p)  

 

-give up에 전치사 on이 있고 없고에 따라 뉘앙스가 조금 달라집니다.

▶give up the project- 외부적인 조건 때문에 프로젝트 자체를 포기한다는 의미

▶give up on the project- 상황이 좋아도 프로젝트 자체가 그다지 좋은 것 같지 않아서

                                          내부적, 주관적인 요인 때문에 포기한다는 의미

 

▶give up drinking- 술을 살 수 있는 돈이 없거나 포기할 수밖에 없는 상황에서의 포기 

▶give up on drinking- 술이 건강에 도움이 되지 않을 거라는 판단에서의 포기

-그런데 실제상황에서는 이런 차이까지 의식해서 쓰는 경우는 드뭅니다.

  그냥 살짝 다르다는 것 정도 알고 넘어가면 될 듯 해요. 

 

+) Never give up on your dream. 절대 꿈을 포기하지 마라. 

+) I won't give up on you! 난 절대 너 포기하지 않아! 

 

*patch (특히 주변과는 다른 조그만) 부분 

-an area that is different from what surrounds it  조각 파편

He moved through patches of sunlight and shadows.(7-1/6p)

-햇빛에 반짝이는 잎들과 그 그늘진 사이사이로 걸어가는 장면을 상상해 보아요. 

 

The warm air smelled fresh and green.(7-1/6p)  

-한국말에 풀내음이 난다고 하는 것처럼 영어에서는 smell green 

smell green 하니 풀냄새가 떠올라요~

 

Sorry we didn't come sooner.(7-1/7p) 

-늦게 도착했을 때 미안함을 담아 쓰기 좋은 표현

 

*as~as: ~만큼

It was as silent as the falling snow.(7-1/9p)  

소복소복 소리없이 쌓이는 눈, 상상해 봅니다. 

 

*silent/ still 조용한

Then everything was silent.(7-1/9p)

Then everything was still.

-지금까지 대부분 still을 사용했는데 7권에서는 silent를 썼어요. 

 

[매직문장] 7권-2 Bones

• Not until our mission is complete.
• They don't have books that tell them about us.  
• No wonder we're cold. 
• Why are they carrying spears?
• In the gray light, they stamped the snow off their sneakers.
• The snow wasn’t deep yet.

 

*no wonder  ... 어쩐지 ~더라, ~은 당연하다

No wonder we're cold.(7-2/12p)

 

He read aloud.(7-2/14p) 

He read out loud.(6-10/61p)  

-비슷한 표현의 반복, 바로 매트하의 장점입니다. 

 

Oh, trapping the animals - that’s sad.

No, it's not. They couldn't live without hunting.(7-2/15p) 

-덫에 걸린 동물이 불쌍하고 슬프다는 애니에게

살기 위해선 사냥을 할 수 밖에 없다고 차분히 설명해주는 장면이 잭의 모습이 인상적이었어요. 

 

*biting 살을 에는 듯한, 얼얼한

-Biting wind or cold is extremely cold.

The wind was biting.(7-2/16p)

It was so cold it felt like fire.(5-4/25p)

-수영복차림으로 Ice Age라니, 정말 살이 떨어져나가는 느낌일 듯 해요. 

5권 닌자편에서 차가운 냇가를 건널 때도 생각나요. 

 

Snow blew against his glasses.(7-2/16p)

-against 쓰임하면 떠오르는 그림 

-이번에는 blow against 연결해서 기억해 봐요. 

 

"Good thinking."(7-2/16p)

- 좋은생각이야! 라고 말할 때,

Good idea! 라는 표현만 쓴다면 이제는 "Good thinking." 표현 한가지 더 챙겨봅니다. 

 

*wrap~around 감싸다, 휘두르다

Annie wrapped her towel around her head.(7-2/16p) 

Bandages were still wrapped around the bald skull.(3-8/44p)

The snow wasn't deep yet.(7-2/17p)  

-아직 눈이 많이 쌓이지 않다, deep이란 단어로 표현

 

*slightly 약간, 조금

- not very much, only a little

* lightly : without using much force or pressure (+ etc.)

It was only slightly warmer inside.(7-2/17p)   

-아주 약간 더 따뜻할 뿐이다 할 때 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 표현같아요. 

 

*stamp (발을) 구르다

They stamped the snow off their sneakers.(7-2/17p)  

발을 콩콩, 동동 굴러서 눈을 털어내는 모습이 그려져요. 

한국말처럼 영어에도 비슷하게 표현되는 표현들이 꽤 많죠. 괜시리 영어가 재밌게 느껴집니다.

[매직문장] 7권-3 Brrr!

• Didn't you hear me calling?
• We just got in a panic.
• Annie huddled close to Jack. 
• Only this cave seemed to have a golden glow.
• He took off his glasses to wipe off the snow.

*grow 비교급: 점점 더 ~ 해지다

*grow strong 강해지다

*wet dog smell 구리구리한 냄새

The wet dog smell grew stronger.(7-3/20p)

 

*keep ~을 계속하다[반복하다]

*keep on: to continue or persist in doing something

*keep on ~ing - 계속 …하다 (집요하게 반복되는 동작·상태의 계속)

He kept going.(7-3/20p)

They kept on going.(7-3/21p)

-여기서 on은 부사로 무언가를 계속 하다의 의미를 가지고 있어요. 

 

*on 

1. <전치사> …(위)에[로](표면에 붙어있는 느낌)

 2. <부사> (쉬지않고) 계속하여, (계속 끊이지 않고) 죽, 다시 (계속)

 

 Didn't you hear me calling?(7-3/21p)

 -열심히 불렀는데 대답안 할 때 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 생활 영어표현

 

*shatter 산산히 부서지다, 충격을 주다

*shattered 엄청난 충격을 받은, 완전히 지친

A booming snore shattered the air.(7-3/21p)

-코고는 소리가 얼마나 크기에 산산히 부서지는 위력으로 느껴질까요?

 

*run into 뛰어 들어가다, 맞닥뜨리다, ~와 우연히 만나다

He ran into something.(7-3/21p)

Annie ran into the Frog Creek woods.(6-1/3p) 

-run into 문맥에 따라 어떤 의미로 쓰였는지 살펴봐주세요.

 

-run into 예문으로 더 살펴보아요. 

+) Let me know if you run into any problems. 무슨 문제가 있으면 제게 알려주세요.

+) Be careful not to run into debt. 빚을 지게 되지 않도록 조심해라.

+) We had the misfortune to run into a violent storm 

    우리는 운 나쁘게도 격렬한 폭풍을 만났다.

 

*jagged  들쭉날쭉한, 삐쭉삐쭉한

-Something that is jagged has a rough, uneven shape or edge with lots of sharp points.  

They ran between fallen rocks and under jagged cliffs.(7-3/21p)

 

*All 단어 하나로 강조를 해줍니다.

All they could see was snow and rocks and their own footprints.(7-3/22p)

-all he could see 그가 볼 수 있는 모든 것 

 

*huddle 떼지어 모이다, 옹송그리며 모이다

Annie huddled close to Jack..(7-3/23p) 

On the icy ground, they huddled together.(7-2/16p)

 

Snow blew against his glasses.(7-2/16p)

The cold wind blew against his bare legs.(7-3/23p)

-against 쓰임하면 떠오르는 그림 

-어제에 이어 blow against 또 나왔어요. 

 

[매직문장] 7권-4  Cave Kids

• It went all the way down to her sneakers.
• We won't be able to see anything.
• He slipped on the coat.
• She had squeezed into the opening and was gone.
• Carry it with two hands.

 

A small flame danced from a bed of glowing coals.(7-4/24p)

Their shadows danced on the stone walls.(7-4/25p) 

-dance로 표현하는 게 좀 익숙해졌죠. 

동굴 속에서 이 장면이 참 예쁘게 느껴져요. 

 

*squeeze into ~ 에 비집고 들어가다

She had squeezed into the opening.(7-4/31p) 

틈으로 비집고 들어가는 모습을 기억해 두고 싶어서.

 

*all the way down/ up 끝까지 내려가다/올라가다,, 쭉 내려가다/올라가다

It went all the way down to her sneaker.(7-4/26p) 

The ladder went all the way up to the top of the tree.(1-1/3p) 

 

*a bed of something ~을 깐 바닥 

 A small flame danced from a bed of glowing coals.(7-4/24p)   

 

*slip on (옷 등을) 재빨리 입다

-to put clothes or shoes on quickly and easily

He slipped on the coat.(7-4/26p)  

 

-지금까지 slip은 문을 살짝 빠져나갈 때, 

가방에 책 집어넣을때 사용했었는데 오늘은 추워서 코트를 재빨리 입을 때 사용하고 있어요.

 

It did feel very warm - and soft.(7-4/28p)

-얼마나 따뜻했으면, did를 써서 강조했을까요. 

 

*I wonder 의문사 구문

I wonder how they made these coats.(7-4/28p)

I wonder where this goes.(7-4/31p)       

I wonder where we'll find the next one.(7-1/8p)   

 

*쉬우면서도 여전히 헷갈리는 표현 

Do you mind ~? ~해도 괜찮을까요?/ ~해 주실래요? ->’안돼요?’ 라고 이해하면 편해요. 

 

*mind (특히 의문문/부정문에 쓰임) 언짢아하다, ~하는 것을 꺼리다 

mind 자체에 부정의 의미가 담겨있기 때문에 헷갈려요. 

 

Do you mind if~? 형태 많이 보시죠. 

Do you mind~? 의미에 ‘~하면’만 붙여주면 됩니다. 

 I hope the cave people won’t mind if we borrow their coats.(7-4/29p) 

 

*gooey 끈적끈적한 

-If you describe a food or other substance as gooey, you mean that it is very soft and sticky.

In the hollow of each was gooey white stuff and a pile of moss.(7-4/30p)   

 

*with two hands 양손으로 잡다

"Carry it with two hands."(7-4/30p)  

“두 손으로 옮겨라~” 엄마한테 자주 들었던 말씀

 

She held her lamp <up to an opening in the wall>.(7-4/31p)

-벽의 구멍뚫린 곳까지 램프를 들어올렸다.

 

*duck 급히 움직이다, 몸을 수그리다

He ducked into a small tunnel.(7-4/32p)  

-지금까지 duck은 오리+ 몸을 수그리다의 뜻으로 알고 있었는데

‘급히 움직이다’의 뜻 하나더 추가합니다. 

 

[매직문장] 7-5 Snow Tracks

• It’s too hard to get to.
• She pointed at a painting farther down the wall. 
• We better put our lamps back.
• She must have crawled out when we were looking at the paintings.
• The snow had stopped falling.

 

*too ~ to  ...하기에 너무 ~하다/ 너무 ~해서 ...할수 없다 

*get to (어떤 상황, 사태에 이르다) 되다, 이르다

*be hard to get to (교통이) 불편하다

It's too hard to get to.(7-5/33p) 

 

잭: Maybe it’s an art gallery.

애니: I don’t think so. It's too hard to get to.(7-5/33p)

-(squeeze into) 비집고 들어갈 정도니 접근이 힘들어서 아트갤러리는 아닐거라고 말 한 듯 싶어요. 

 

◈비슷해서 헷갈리는 단어 farther vs. further

1. farther <물리적 거리> 더 멀리

-)far-farther-farthest 

 

2. further <시간 정도 거리 수량> 더 멀리에, 더 나아가, 게다가

-)far-further-furthest

 

+) I can go no farther/further. 나는 더 이상 갈 수가 없다.

+) The issue needs further examination. 그 사안은 더 많은 검토가 필요하다.

 

-farther  <물리적 거리>에만 사용

-further <시간 정도 거리 수량>을 나타내어 더 많이 사용됩니다.

*blow out (불꽃이 바람 등에) 꺼지다, 내뿜다

-입으로 후우~ 하고 불어서 램프끄는 장면이 그려져요. 

 

*위치 나타내는 단어 

-by …옆[가]에

-next to(위치상으로) …바로 옆에

They placed them back by the fire.(7-5/36p)

*entrance to  ~로 들어가는 문, 입구

*entrance to the cave 동굴로 향할 수 있는 입구

She was standing near the entrance to the cave.(7-5/37p) 

-entrance에 (방향)to를 쓰면 ~ 어디로 들어가는 문, 

 

+)entrance of 어떤 집에 붙어있는 입구

Then they slipped into the entrance of the castle.(2-4/26p)  성의 문
